Discussion of undocumented features in patch 1.10

The grainyness I'm talking about is more like "dithering", if you get the idea.
I remember originally noticing it only on dark spots on tracks like SSR5, SSR7 or La Sarthe during night hours.
I guess this is a compromise to avoid framerate drops, which I think decreased noticeably.

Wow. Nice choice PD. But It's good only if it works. Are the frame-rate issues gone? Are blocky shadows fixed?

Hm i'm gonna check whether this is true right now, but I bet they didn't turn down graphics that wouldn't make sense. I also wish they had made this game in 720p. Today's consoles can't produce good graphics on 1080p. What PD managed to produce with this resolution is probably a real achievement, although its 'only' 1280x1080. If the game would have been 720p we would have had smooth shadows and stuff :p
Yes. Sony, PD, everyone should have saved 1080p for the PS4, PS3 just can't do it with any decent amount of detail. Especially as we are talking about a driving simulator, smoothness is number 1, visual detail comes further down the list.

Ok I just checked and I don't agree that detail has been lowered on the Madrid circuit. I think you might just have become more aware of a certain grainyness in the game. I know what you mean, I also see the grain on ssr7 in the dark but not on the Madrid course.

If you're really sure about it, then I think I have never noticed the extra detail that's missing now which means it was probably not really necesarry, but I think it just stayed the same.

edit: And about saving 1080p for the PS4. that's exactly what 99% of the developers are doing. Almost all AAA games are 720p titles and only some small games that are very low on resources are 1080p. To be honest I can't think of any big budget game that runs on 1080p other than GT5 :P.

I don't think for the PS3 1080p is necesarry. God of war 3, Uncharted 2, Killzone 3 and many other games look perfect on 720p you just shouldn't sit too close in front of your, because then the lower res becomes noticeable.

I noticed when entering pits in Daytona the animation of the crew is seen from outside the car and not from inside as always. Also when choosing a rally category car all oponents where rally cars, not this time, and also there are no more falling parts from rally cars (bumpers, doors).

What the? I'm never going to get the trophy for breaking a car then :\

DAMN I thought I was the only person who noticed that since GT5's release.

Yeah, I wonder why. Do they really have to limit the colour palette/dynamic range that much to keep the FPS high enough at high resolution?

Damn.

Definitely noticed the (colour?) dithering since launch, I've always thought it was an attempt to save bandwidth somewhere, somehow. Perhaps they bumped it up a bit? It was always present on those excellent amorphous flares / bloom you get in bright light, too. Then again, I remember reading that dithering doesn't save memory, so...

I've noticed, however, that a similar dithering effect occurs on vegetation, namely the track-side trees on Tokyo R246. They look a bit like this on the left (from here)

Perhaps they're using a similar "imposter" blending technique when switching to the 3D model, or maybe it's just part of the rendering method for vegetation. I'm not entirely sure if the dithering was there before the update, so that may all have been off-topic...

I've noticed the spectators are flat and cheap looking now as well. I'm certain they had some sort of form to them before.

I think dithering is a result of lower color depth. Now they use 16-bit color with dithering, like in GT4 in 480p/1080i, same old tricks :). Hope it helps save a memory little bit. It not so bad if frame-rate issues are gone.

To me better to remove them completely and save memory for something more important :)

Straight from my mouth! They need "just" drop 1080p. Make it truly good looking 720p@60fps game, which is still very, very rare case.

If GT6 is on the PS3 I wonder if there will be a downgrade to 720p, but a faster graphics engine. Would be too much of an admission of defeat though..

The wall now reduces speed much much greater (tire rubbing)

Wow, now that makes sense, now that I've read this I'm definitely noticing it's true. I rubbed a wall at Rome the other day and it was like I seriously lost speed.

You guys do know that you can set the PS3 HDMI output to 720p only
Yes but that doesn't fix all the GFX issues like if they optimized GT5 for 720p- it would be cool if the did do that though. Like if you run in 720p mode the shadows are smooth and smoke higher quality, etc. That would be sweet.

I noticed that my FF turned into the wall when I brushed it in a McLaren F1 on Rte 246 in the SuperCar season the other day. I never noticed that FF effect before.

Even at 480p...

Ewww, that wouldn't look too good on an HDTV, but I see what you mean for SDTV players.

BTW- I played GT4 on my HDTV @ 1080i on the PS2 with those component cables when waiting for GT5p to come out. It was amazing the PS2 could even do that at all, but it didn't look that great.

Anyone else getting the intro music on repeat at the start of the first race in an online lobby? Its pretty annoying to race with the same guitar lick playing over and over again...especially since i have the race music turned off.

Yes but that doesn't make the game look any better. This is because the game was made for 1080p, so with 720p you get the same graphics with a lower resolution and slightly better aa.

If the game was made for 720p then they could have done things like 3d trees, smooth shadows, higher res textures, more grass. Now those things simply aren't put in the game so setting it to 720p will do nothing.

If GT is not a launch title with PS4 I wonder if it will be worth putting the GT5 disc in a PS4 and hopefully it will make it fully 1920x1080 and 60fps and no screen tearing, and with a little online update give it all the AA bells and whistles processing effects. A few days work for PD to keep us going.
I'm thinking of the future here.

Only by about a year and a half ;)

not sure if this was mentioned before but here it is anyways

in ferrari F430 gear change animation is now fixed, now it actually is using the flappy pedals

Don´t know if it is new:

The AI in b-spec makes room now when they get lapped to let the leading cars pass.

Did anyone mention picking up debris with grip reduction set to real? It's pretty obvious that running through the grass will drastically reduce grip on the next set of turns if you don't drive it off. It's ok to put an inisde wheel in the dirt here and there, but if you go off track, when you re-enter its like driving on ice skates.

Mentioned before, but yeah they made it a lot more realistic in last patch for sure.

i like it....i just wish it was actually documented. It changes the lines on several tracks for sure. I no longer feel safe putting tires into the grass on the esses at suzuka. I also stay clear of the grass on the right side between turns 2 and 3 of grand valley east reverse. Previously you could put your outside tires in the dirt before entering the tunnel to get a wider arc...but now if you have grass on your tires you'll run wide and hit the tunnel wall.

I didn´t feel any completr new difference. But htis feature was also well done from the beginning.
