Do Aero parts affect performance?

In GT5 you can see in the settings menu if your aero parts are doing anything.
Higher drag will affect fast cars more than slow ones (naturally)
The improved downforce will help in the faster corners.
Beware that running high rear downforce and no front downforce can give big understeer as the weight does shift to the rear as the speed increases.
So if i run a front engine car with massive power, rear downforce will help keep the rear of the car under control. Too much though and i'll loose front weight on my tyres while having the same mass! This will lead to the front beeing pulled to the outside because the mass wants to go there and the tyre have little weight pushing it into the tarmac, resulting in loss of grip i.e understeer.

I hope this gives you some idea about aerodynamics and adjusting your aero settings.

Downforce...

...you need it.

There are two different types of aero kits, the first type is designed to increase top speed and high end acceleration, these are the non-adjustable aero kits. These are the side skirts, front, and rear aero parts. The other type is the adjustable type. This type is designed to increase downforce and cornering at the expense of top speed.

The only aero part that you can buy that affects performance is the wing. More rear downforce than front can make your car understeer, the opposite can make your car oversteer. A higher downforce has never as far as I've seen, made a car go faster in a straight line. Downforce improves cornering speed and braking ability.

No, not really.

All Aero parts whether adjustable or not will all contribute to the same overall thing.

They will ALL increase drag. They will ALL improve stability. They will all increase down force and will all affect handling in some fashion. Whether the differences are noticeable in GT5 or not, is debatable.

I truly wish it were so. But I challenge anybody to show that front spoilers, extensions, side skirts, or rear splitters affect anything but appearance in GT5. Only rear spoilers actually affect performance.

and let's not forget that a wing on the rear of most cars, fast ones particularly, will cause the car to do very wonky things when airborne. take the jumps at Eiger short or Cape Ring and see for yourself. somehow, either through adjusting DF, choosing a wing or not, or dropping your speed, this must be controlled to keep your car in your hands.
