Yeah - but it ain't two schooners at the pub on Friday after work, though, is it?

(Schooner - NSW, Australia term for 425ml glass of beer)

Can I ask something on this?

I started a similar topic on this a while that ended up in a bit of brawl (who'd think you could go wrong with a topic called 'What beer is everyone drinking?') - why is this such a controversial issue in the US?

This wouldn't be anything approaching controversial in Australia (maybe we're a pack of drunks over here?) - can anyone in the US provide some insight?

I'm a pretty light drinker (particularly within our circle of friends - but none of them have what I would consider a problem), but some of the responses here - is it just the age of the forum? I'm in my early 30's, and work pretty hard during the week - or is it something else - we seem to have a genuine cultural gap here...

Well, cause underage drinking is ILLEGAL. And because a lot of people have or are real over-concerned parents, and in America a lot of times people only see black or white: they're ALWAYS right, no one else is. So arguments are easy to come by about free speech, AIDS, gays, abortion, gun control, drinking, birth control, etc. etc.

i drink at least 3 times a month, what i mean when i say drink i mean getting wasted and i smoke weed at least once a week but it's alright because i'm always active and playing sports so is not rally harming me because i'm either getting rid of the alcahol by peein or sweting and weed doesn't really do much harm to me at least.

Vat_Man. Thanks. I don't think it's a cultural gap as much as an age gap. I'm also in my early 30s and have a pretty sensible attitude towards drinking. At least I think I do. It seems that those below the drinking age in the US (some far below, it seems) fall into two main catagories: it's dead wrong or it's not only good, but it's to be abused. Not much middle ground there.

No, I'm not saying everyone is like that, but those tend to be the most fervent, vocal opinions. (Like a lot of subjects). So, you'll get a lot of ... er ...we'll just call them "pasisonate" responses.

I'm trying not to put my own bias in here too much. At least so far. But, even in my college days (before I decided on the self-imposed limit) I tended to drink far more. I think a lot of people who've newly discovered alcohol do the same thing. But I decided too much wasn't good. And, personally, I've grown a bit attached to my brain cells, so I generally avoid killing off too many of them.

Finally, I do find some of these posts a bit disturbing. Like "it's ok to do this because I do this other thing." It sounds like reasoning and understanding what certain substances can do have gone amiss. But that's just me.

Okay - thanks for the considered response, Sertsa - you may have something there.

From my own perspective, my only concern about what I drink is the calories I'm consuming - I run about 30km a week plus 3 or 4 weight sessions (and golf, plus surfing - maybe I'm too active!) so it's probably not that much of an issue, but I do like an obsessive worry.

I'm just astounded that what I consider a fairly inocuous issue can raise such passion.

As for abusing alcohol during uni/college days, I'm afraid I don't remember talk your whating about....uh, wait.... :o

It looks to me like it's an age thing here , teenagers of today seem to be much more mature and worldy wise than they was say 10-15 years ago when i was one :( I for one never had all todays gadgets at my disposal , i never even knew the internet existed ( did it?) :o I used to get drunk once a week with my mates hanging out thinking it was cool , but had i had something else to do with my time i doubt i would have been doing that .
Maybe todays kids have that many gadgets at thier disposal these days they don't need to go get slaughtered out of boredom (like i did) .

I the same as you drink at least once a week now (at the W/E) I feel no shame for having the occasional drink :drink: afterall after a long week we earn it don't we ? :p

Oh yeah i also smoke too, though i am going to try and stop before it kills me :)

The smoking thing is one I'm glad I never picked up. Having in the last 5 years buried both parents (both dead from smoking related cancers at the age of 59) all I can say is if you're planning to have kids, give it away now.

Having 2 beers in your WHOLE life at the age of 19 is NOTHING to be ashamed of, dude...

Sure, it wouldn't be anything to be ashamed of, but I'm not 19...:nervous:

Who told you I'm 19...:reallyodd Is it just a guess? Only like 2 people here know my true age; Jordan, and MistaX, I believe. I'm not much older than yourself...;)

Yeah - but it isn't the parents posting - it's the kids...

Kids only learn their crap from one place - parents. I still think it's a lack of middle ground, like I said, in America and that everyone's gotta be right. Ick. I hate that crap.

Nope, never had a sip of anything (I'm 14). When I'm of age, I only plan to have a glass of wine on special occasions...

Smoking, never. I have asthma, so I can't stand to be around smokers anyway, so what are the chances of me getting into a group of friends who are smokers? BTW, it just astounds me that there are asthmatics who smoke... in fact, it's a really hight number, like 8% or something... just amazing. :(

Puffy- Errr, weed? My question is, why? Trust me, it will only hinder your athletics in the long run... *waits to be flamed*

I'd like to see his reasoning behind "it can't hurt me, I am athletic."I'd like to think he is a complete moron.

I only drink when i go out. But i get drunk rarely, i usually stop when i feel the drunkness coming up. Can have a lot though.

But once in a while i get totally drunk, that can be fun:D

Alcohol is sort of difficult to gain access to unless you have that certain someone of age to get it for you. Most of the time, you could just go stand outside a gas station and ask people going in and out, but that takes time.

You can buy booze at a gas station?!? What genius let that through?
