I've been doing some thinking today. I really have to thank video games for introducing me to a lot of the bands in my library of music. If it weren't for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series my favourite band might not be Millencolin and I may not even know some awesome bands like Sublime, Goldfinger, The Suicide Machines and Bad Religion. Gran Turismo hasn't contributed to my music library quite as much as THPS, but thanks to it I got well into Less Than Jake and Kaiser Chiefs. Usually I wouldn't really listen to much hard rock or heavy metal, but thanks to GT I'd consider myself a bit of a Van Halen Fan.

So, what about the rest of you. Have you found some of your favourite bands through video games?

Not really. I have a few songs here and there that I've downloaded because I liked them in a game, but 90% of the music is just from magazines or by using music-map.

but thanks to GT I'd consider myself a bit of a Van Halen Fan.

I wouldn't admit that to anyone.

As for video games helping with my music collection? I agree Tony Hawk Pro Skater series helped me discover some new bands that I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise. Some of the EA sports games too have given me some songs to explore. The same can be said for Project Gothem as well.

Grand theft auto series. No need to explain anymore.

Well, it's not that I didn't know Van Halen, but having Panama in GT4 really sparked my interest.

I'm joking around. Van Halen has a reputation here in the states as being the favoured band of people who drive beat up old Camaro's, don't have all their teeth, drink copious amounts of Budweiser, beat their wives, and wear mullets. I suppose in Australia you would call them ockers or yobbos.

Hah, thought you were saying I should know of them without the aid of a video game... awkward. :dopey:

ockers or yobbos.

I've never used those words in my life.

Need For Speed HP2 and older had me hooked with the music. Influenced my music tastes alot.

Well I have to thank video games to introduce me to a wide genre of musics. The Tony Hawk series always had some good soundtracks and I really am thankful for that. EA has been a big contributor to my expanding music genre. The EA trax was a neat feature to be included to each EA games, and I found many good bands from EA, such as Bloc Party, Maxeen, The Starting Line, The Academy Is..., Yellowcard, etc. 👍 I do thank GT as well for some of their music, although some of them were a bit mainstream....

Thats like 50% of my music taste comes from. 👍

Gran Turismo 4 was pretty much the only game that has ever contributed to my soundtrack; I discovered Queens of the Stone Age, Judas Priest and Kaiser Chiefs through playing. But most of my stuff comes from friends who make recommendations.

The original Road Rash introduced me to Soundgarden for the first time ten or so years ago, when I was still pretty young. Also, the Tony Hawk series got me into KISS and a couple of other skater-punk bands, most of which I don't listen to much anymore. Most of my musical tastes have come through my parents' old LPs or from listening to the radio, though.

Burnout series got me into Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine and Jimmy Eat World. But the biggest one I have to thank is F1 05, the intro featured Muse. :D

I can't think of any in particular off the top of my head except GTA: Vice City. Which got me into 80s music of various kinds.

Oh, and San Andreas. 'Cos that got me into classic rap and hip hop. Much better than today's crap. 50 Cent my ass.

And mainly I like rock and metal. Although I'm not sure where my love for that came from, most likely V-Rock from Vice City, and K-DST and Radio X from San Andreas.

Those R* boys do soundtracks well, I'll give 'em that.

EDIT: Gran Turismo 2 deserves an honourable mention. For instance, I'd never heard of Stereophonics before I heard Bartender and The Thief. Turns out, my dad's a huge fan and he has that album. Nice one PD and my dad! GT2 also got me into Drum 'n' Bass to. Because of that song by Everything but the Girl.

AND (Almost done), GT1 got me into Feeder and Ash.

I think that's it...

I'd have to agree about Feeder, they've had quite a few songs on GT games!

Omega Boost- some music by Static X( they made " Push it")

I have Guitar Hero and Rock Band to thank for some of my music. Most of it comes from the radio.

Oh wow! I always wondered who the intro song was by! 👍

Totally. Rusty Cage is still one of my favorite, adrenaline pumping songs of all time due to this game.

Indeed. I’m listening to Stockholm Syndrome right now funnily enough.

Fahrenheit | theory of a deadman
GTA4 | freedie jackson :)
fifa 99 | blur

list goes on...

Not at all. When I was growing up, video games had notoriously bad music. I didn't play many games when they started realizing the marketing potential of it.

Skate and snowboard videos, however... That's where most of my music came from!

Tony Hawk Proskater
SSX 3
some need for speeds
GT4/3
many NBA Lives

Final Fantasy Series
Zelda
Metal Gear Solid
Diablo II
Doom

All phenomenal soundtracks.

It's a toss up between Road Rash's Rusty Cage and GT2's Super Bon Bon as to which one gets me going more. Ultimately, I'll take either. ;)

GTA Vice City and Vice City Stories were 2 of the main reasons behind me getting into 80s rock and metal. Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, KISS, Slayer, etc. All bands I guess I would've found eventually, but Vice City was the catalyst. San Andreas introduced me to alternative music, which I enjoy, but didn't grab me as much as the 80s did. I'm expecting more of the same from GTA4.

I love the music from Destruction Derby 2, but I don't know anything more about the bands behind it.

Final Fantasy Series
Zelda
Metal Gear Solid
Diablo II
Doom

All phenomenal soundtracks.

I was expecting responses like this rather than music compilations set as a backdrop to games.. 👍 My favorite video game soundtracks (original)

Chrono Trigger (I have the soundtrack)
Final Fantasy series, particularly 6, 7 and 10 (though I admit it's pretty corny sounding when taken out of context)
Perfect Dark
Zelda (OoT in particularl)
Tons more...

Not surprisingly, these are some of my favorite games.
