SSX On Tour and SSX3 has to have been the largest contributors. They introduced me to Goldfinger and even though I don't listen to Goldfinger anymore I loved it when I did! They also introduced me to Iron Maiden (Run To The Hills), Motorhead as well for that matter. Both those games had a excellent soundtrack.

The other games are probably Burnout and GT3/4. Burnout for some of the more modern punk-ish bands and GT3 for Feeder and GT4 for Kaiser Chiefs.

I'm joking around. Van Halen has a reputation here in the states as being the favoured band of people who drive beat up old Camaro's, don't have all their teeth, drink copious amounts of Budweiser, beat their wives, and wear mullets. I suppose in Australia you would call them ockers or yobbos.

I love Van Halen!

I was introduced to a few bands before they made it big by EA, and started listenin to others. They got me started on Rise Against, and I heard of Avenged Sevenfold at least 2 months before they got really mainstream popular with Bat Country.

Burnout 3: Atreyu, My Chemical Romance (just "I'm Not Okay"), Finger Eleven (just "Stay in Shadow"; this band's pretty hit-or-miss with me).

GTA: Vice City got me into metal in general. San Andreas got me back into gangster rap, which I hadn't listened to since I lived in Cali in my early elementary school years (I remember I used to sing Gin and Juice and Gangsta's Paradise back in the day ). I'm a little into classic rock because of this game as well. Vice City Stories introduced me to yet more good metal.

GT4: Kinda got me liking Chronic Future.

Tony Hawk series: Suicidal Tendencies, The Network, Public Enemy, The Explosion, Run DMC, countless others.

NFS Most Wanted: Bullet For My Valentine (now one of my favorite bands).

SSX3: Autopilot Off, that Finger Eleven song that's on there.

Midnight Club 3: Crisis' "You Like My Style"

I'm usually more interested in the game's score than the artists being used. Games usually only either turn me on to 1 song by a band, or a song I didn't know from a band I already liked.

GT3's intro turned me onto Lenny Kravitz, but I only like a few songs.
Vice City got me on 80's. I already knew a lot of the metal they played, but Flock of Seagulls, Tears For Fears, Corey Hart, Talk Talk, John Waite, all bands/singers I doubt 90& of the members here even know of.
GTA 4 was ok. It got me onto Genesis, and David Bowie.

Ape Escape and Ridge Racer.

EDIT: The Metal Gear Solid series, mainly the themes for each one, especially "Snake Eater"

EDIT #2: The lyrics in the verses not so much.

GT4 I remember having a quite lame soundtrack. In fact I had the music turned off I think. But there were a couple good songs like Summer Song by Joe Satriani but I knew of him long before.

I think SSX3 if anything got me into that whole techno rock feel but that got played out fast for me.

Everything I listen to now is thanks to internet radio and friends :)

That song always reminded me of James Bond even while fighting... which kind of ruined the game for me because I would hear that song with gun fire. It would never match with me.

Well, actually I have to thank one video game to introduce me to the type of music I listen to – Heavy Metal.

The game was Jet Set Radio. Although most of the tracks were techno beats, and electronic, there was one music I really liked, that was Just Got wicked by Cold, an Alternative Metal band from Jacksonville, Florida, USA. It was really a really great and deep track. Then I went to the music store, look for some of their CD’S and found 2 of them (13 ways to bleed on stage and year of the spider), listen to them and bought it. I found all of their music great, amazing to say the least. There was another game (that I was purchased after JSR) named Dave Mira BMX, and it had some other Heavy Metal music, and I really liked it.

So I thought, well, I must really like Heavy Metal. So there was one day when I went to my uncles home and my cousin (that is older than me) and the only family member (besides me) who likes Metal, that introduced me to some bands like Mega Death, Metallica, Deftones, Anthrax, DOWN…etc., and wow, what do you know I really liked…the slow music without much “noise” and “screams”…just plain clean voice. So I though, hmmm, Cold is an Alternative Metal band, and I like it so, Alternative Metal must be the way. A few years later, this time with a Slim PS2 I bought a game named True Crime, and it had a really great music – Poem by Taproot, again, another Alternative Metal band. I started heading down to the alternative alley, with bands such as Tool and some others, meanwhile listening to Heavy Metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Mega Death, Fear Factory and many others, starting to like those “screams” and growls.

So nowadays I listen to everything related to rock. From Heavy Metal to Alternative Bands and some Hard Rock, all thanks to video games.

Many games have made me find more music, or I've got the soundtrack as it's very well selected, such as these series; Tony Hawk, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Halo, Gran Turismo, Command & Conquer and Need For Speed. All of these bring a great atmosphere to the gameplay through the music which in turn makes for good listening alone. Many other games through the years have had very good soundtracks but the above are the ones that stand out for me, mainly because I own them.

It's not often I pick up a new band or artist from a game with licensed music. Usually the song selection isn't very good, IMO. I agree with Prosthetic in that GT4 is one example. I also agree with Danoff and ceiling_fan in that there are a lot of great original soundtracks in videogames.

I actually have videogames to thank for my interest in music. I've never been a big fan of mainstream genres of music, and the emotional, lyric-free tracks of the games I played as a kid greatly interested me. So much so, that I was inspired to try to bang out the melodies on the little electronic keyboard (piano) I had. One day, I was playing a song I had heard on Utopia, an SNES game, on my friend's parents' piano. The mother asked me where I had heard it, and I told her. It turned out to be Pachebel's Canon! That day, she recommended to my mother that I should start piano lessons, and I've been playing instruments ever since.

Over the years I added other instruments to my repertoire (with varying amounts of practice), learned to compose my own music, and learned to appreciate a lot more non-videogame music. I still know and play dozens of videogame songs on piano, though. Lately, I've been sequencing direct MIDI arrangements or retro-style remixes of songs, game-related or not.

GT4 introduced me to Joe Satriani so YES! (not my favorite but he did some good songs) :)

i was amazed satriani got in a game, one from his good days too :D
i bought the vice city box set, not that i hadnt heard most of the music before but it was a good collection of songs
ages ago i got the album by the buzzhorn after hearing a song off nfshp2
iv liked most of the music from games but not so much to inspire me to get more, tony hawks series and the nfs games had a few good ones though

I never liked the artists whose songs appeared in a video game that much, though I found I often liked the in-game music itself, composed for the game. Most of my favourite tracks are from RPGs.

The Gran Turismo games introduced me to the band called "Feeder". :D

I have loads of games to thank for music! but the list is pretty much that same as everyone elses.. NFS, GT, GTA etc etc..

I particularly glad to have found out about of the more niche bands like Dakota Star (Daiki Kasho) from all the GT's and Boom Boom Satellites from Ridge Racer 5 of all things!

Oh and Fifa World Cup 2006 introduced me to loads of bands with its international playlist.

Robin

Gran Turismo - The Chemical Brothers, Manic Street Preachers, Ash
Gran Turismo 2 - Apollo440, Soul Coughing, The Cardigans
Gran Turismo 4 - Dakota Star

Sonic The Hedgehog (Series) - Crush 40, Lee Brotherton

Personally, I have been introduced to many varied styles of music thanks to video game music. Some of it is from actual artists, whilst some original in game compositions have struck a chord with me.

Real World

Rollcage/Rollcage Stage II: This game has a rocking soundtrack! both games lend heavily from the Moving Shadow record label with heavy breaks, and kicking DnB. At the time of their releases, both games were at the bleading edge of the DnB/Breaks scene.

Wipout Series: For me one of the best ever game soundtracks was that of the 2097 incarnation, which featured an eclectic set of Dance/DnB tunes, with the excellent Papau New Guinea by Future Sound of London. Wip3out had another classic dance derived set with many original compositions by the respected DJ Sasha.

Original Formula 1 (PS1): For one of the first games on PS1, this had a pure adrenalin filled rock soundtrack with a couple of blinding Joe Satriani tracks.

Original Compositions

FFVII: For me this game had some of the most graceful, poignant and uplifting music ever to be put into a game. If you like this style of music, check out the OC remix website (link below). 👍 Be sure to check out Jenova for Classical Piano, a haunting remix of the Jenova battle music - very highly recommended! 👍

Outrun: Being a kid of the 80's, I grew up playing the daddy of all racing games - Outrun! The game itself is still (in my mind) one of the finest arcade racers ever made, but the music within it was absolutely sublime! Even by today's standards, the tunes can still be classed as 'gaming anthems'.

Ridge Racer Series: At the time of their release, all of the Ridge Racer games (upto R4 and maybe further) had contemporary but original in game tunes. Back in '95 with Ridge Racer Revolution, it was hardcore, but as the years and games passed by, they shifted into DnB, and onto possibly one of the greatest ever in game soundtracks with R4. Full of original compositions, the R4 soundtrack stands apart as a funky, soulful, and uplifting experience. Who could forget the classic 'One more win, its Ridge Racer!' opening theme? A little cheesy I know, but its a nice opener for what I believe is a superb soundtrack! 👍

I've only scratched the surface here, and I'm only talking about some of my own personal preferences, but if your interested in finding some excellent video game music, follow these links:

Videogame Pianist
A superb pianist that lends his hand to some excellent renditions of the Sonic and Mario Level themes! Who would of thought that Green Hill Zone could of sounded so beautiful! Be sure to check out the media page for direct downloads!👍

List of video game musicians
If you would like to delve deeper into the musicians that create the video game music you hear, check out this Wikipedia page for pointers. 👍

Fifa 04 - Kings Of Leon
Yeah and not only them, but the whole soundtrack was brilliant.

Aside from the aforementioned game, I want to thank GT2 and FIFA07 as well.

Ohh! and also GTA: Vice City and GTA:SA! how could I forget them!

TOTALLY AGREE. Feeder are now one of my fav bands 👍
their style of music has changed a touch over time I reckon, but all of it is still good.

Ape Escape and Ridge Racer.

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. Really one of my favorite intro sequences in any game or movie.

(Slight spoiler)

Also, I've said it before, but the sequence in the game where you're climbing up that looong ladder in the mountain and you the theme plays subtly in the background is extremely poetic and memorable - one of my favorite moments in any game or movie.

mat hoffman pro bmx 2 got me into 'freestyler' by iggy pop(?)
and burnout 'the one before Revenge' i think got me into LCD soundsystem mainly with 'Daft Punk is Playing at my House'

I also have that game. Freestyler is done by Bombfunk MC and Iggy Pop did the classic 'Passenger'. On the game they have a bonus vid of a guy doing a wheelie for like an impossible amount of time with that song playing! Lots of other good tracks on that game.

What dude ?? Jackington made a really good thread perfect creative but when you mention Tony Hawk I thought "ehh".

I'm pretty darn sure the old PS1 Need 4 Speed series has been mentioned, l0l0l, that's why I had to get every game soundtrack, when Electronic Arts produced their own music or hired whoever the music really flowed with every part of the game, chillout-electronica, whatever you would call it

Those NFS those beats were wicked !! Some "not much hype games" did feature extremely underrated bands..you would need the game disc to rip the tracks hopefully. I remember being much more hooked with Grind Session over THPS, can't find that damn game now. It had this X-ecutioners track like remixed with such a smooth flow beat. DAMN, I think about it now, that game should've gotten a sequel !! For so long !!

FreQuency and Amplitude was really underrated, on PS2, dude Guitar Hero and Rock Band are toys !! If you haven't try Freq or Amp those games have awesome music with simple controls, gives you pretty rough challenge too I remember having the demo disc for it and when I saw Fear Factory I went ballistic l0l0l

My first video game console was the original Playstation. I got it for Christmas in 1997 along with the game FIFA '98. Since then, I've continually "upgraded" to the newer FIFA game at least every other year. This past year marked the tenth anniversary and I kinda realized how many songs I've downloaded after hearing them in the game, so I decided to create a playlist with all of them. Here is what it looks like...

ARTIST - SONG - GAME
1) Song 2 - Blur - FIFA '98
2) Busy Child - Crystal Method - FIFA '98
3) Sell Out - Reel Big Fish - FIFA 2000
4) Black And White Town - Doves - FIFA '06
5) Strasbourg - The Rakes - FIFA '06
6) Nothing In My Way - Keane - FIFA '07
7) London Bridge - Dogs - FIFA '06
8) God Knows - Mando Diao - FIFA '06
9) Off The Hook - CSS - FIFA '08
10) Monster - The Automatic - FIFA '08
11) Helicopter - Bloc Party - FIFA '06
12) You Are The One - Shiny Toy Guns - FIFA '07
13) Sketches (20 Something Life) - La Rocca - FIFA '08
14) Fall Into Place - Apartment - FIFA '08
15) Pogo - Digitalism - FIFA '08
16) Young Folks - Peter Bjorn and John - FIFA '08
17) Closer - Travis - FIFA '08
18) Malemolência - CéU - FIFA '08

Thps3 really got me into Pennywise and Thps2 got me into Powerman 5k and Millencolin. And Gt3 got me into Junkie XL.
