I'm very much anti-smoking. I've seen what it does to perfectley healthy people and I'm not ashamed to admit that I become quite obnoxious if my mates light up near me, to the point I've asked for a drag and then stamped it out as soon as they gave it to me. Shame that trick only works once.

However, most of them only smoked sober for a brief period, though a few still do when drinking.

I've stolen a few cigarettes from my father to try it when I was a teenager, but it was never an habit an I never smoked in public (I think). I've tried weed once when I was 17, pretty boring in my opinion.

I'm proud I helped my girlfriend quit smoking. She used to smoke since she was 17 years old (she's 27 now) and when we started to date early 2006 I made it very clear for her that if she wanted to be with me smoking was not an option. Of course I gave her a few months to accomplish this, and she totally quit it about a year ago. We're both very happy about it. She actually can't stand the smell of cigarettes now.

No. I don't smoke.

Plus, my throat get irritated by cigar/cigarette smoke, and I can't stand the smell, so I know I never will smoke. And it's illegal to smoke indoors in restaurants, pubs and likes, so when it's cold, or raining, or too hot, I don't wan't to go outside to soothe an uneccesary hunger.

Yep. I smoke and have been doing so since I was 15 - I'm now 47 so that's 32 years. Do I regret it - sometimes. Thankfully my kids don't - they're health fanatics.

I'm even older than you are, and I didn't even think about smoking cigarettes.....until I went to Basic and Advanced Individual Training with the U.S. Army. Every MCI, ("C" Ration carton) had a pack of about four cigarettes in it and many of us got hooked on the stuff. It also didn't help that a pack of cigarettes cost about a quarter at the base PX.

I've tried to quit cold turkey for lengthy periods on many occasions, but I still get the urge under stressful situations. My kids are also health fanatics and jump on me if I ever light up in their presence.

Joining the 'never have, never will' camp. My dad has tried to quit repeatedly for the past 6 or 7 years, and although he's cut the number down he's still smoking a few a day. :indiff:

My grandan died of lung cancer because of the damn things, and I can't stand the smell of them. :yuck:

Sweet Tobacco (out of a hookah)
Cloves (Zanzibar, Djarium, X-Tra, etc...)
Every cig you could find at any corner store
Cigars (Cusano's, swishers, prime times, etc...)
Green buds + every thing found in most smoke shops

And then I stopped about a year ago, not too hard to do I must say.

Been smoking since I was 15 or 16 (I'm 18 now). I gradually worked my way up from the occasional cigarette to about 75 (3 decks) a week :yuck: 👎 👎 ... maybe a bit more if I have a big weekend :ouch:

I Tried quiting when they introduced the new laws into Australia banning all smoking in Pubs and Clubs, but only lasted a few days. It seems I didn't realize how much control the stupid things really had over me.

Don't smoke, people.

I had a puff of a cigarette once and it was horrible. I think smoking is incredibly unattractive, especially in women. It's very bogan-ish and I would never do it.

Damn right you won't. Just kidding. :D

I just keep digging myself in, don't I?

But seriously, absolutely never will smoke. It tastes like crap, smells like crap, makes you look stupid and it will eventually kill you of less-than-painful illnesses. I'm sorry, but you are absolutely stupid if you smoke. Plain and simple. I made my mum quit because I didn't want her to kill herself. If you have kids and you smoke, you're even more selfish and don't deserve to have them. You'll end up burdening them with having to look after you as you slowly waste away, for no apparant reason. You're an adult, so don't use the excuse of addiction. There's noone forcing you to do it, and if you really want to, you can give up easily. I'm probably sounding very controversial, but I don't care. Smoking is like continually beating your head in with a brick until you give yourself brain damage. It's along the same lines.

I like Evan's idea of asking for a drag, then stomping the cigarette out.

That's the downside of it. But don't judge people because they smoke.

You've been lucky enough to be raised in a semi-rural area where you play a lot of sports and in general lead a healthy life. The urban kids usually don't have as much chances of spending their time in open fields, and it's not rare for them to start smoking at an early age as something to do. Once they do that and get hooked, they're in it pretty much for life, or at least until they can give it up through a good effort.

I'll be the first to say that the first time you smoke, it does indeed taste horrible; you gag on the smoke and feel like puking... and you spend most of the puffing time dizzy as hell. But through peer pressure and just because you want to do it, you keep trying to get it done. Eventually, you'd master it and be a 'good smoker' (not spitting often, inhlaing the smoke without choking, being able to talk before throwing out the smoke, etc.) and it's all these things which make you enjoy the cigarette with your friends.

And to be honest, I used to really like smoking. The feeling of when the nicotine enters your brain... you get a feeling of well-being that's unavailable with any other legal drug. The after-lunch cigarette, the after-sex cigarette, the bathroom-cigarette, the coffee-cigarette... they're all places and occasions where a cigarette just completed the experience.

To a certain point, those cigarettes were so enjoyable I'd eat more times so I could enjoy more after-meal cigarettes. I'd do it more often so I could enjoy the after-sex cigarette (even if I wheezed the whole time) and so on.

Giving up is not easy. Some people have been lucky enough to be able to do it cold turkey, but it's not the norm. Keep in mind, people who smoke are addicted, and the addiction feels so good, they don't feel like they're harming themselves as much as if you drink alcohol, walk through a busy street or live with someone who smokes.

One of the hardest points for me about quitting smoking were those after-something cigarettes. I couldn't go to the bathroom for about 4 days because I absolutely had to smoke... I'd been doing so for 12 years! Now think of the people who have been doing it for more than double that time. It's very, very hard.

It took me about a year and a half to completely give it up. And I never smoked in that year and a half. I'm talking about leaving the addiction. My method was a bit unorthodox, but it worked. My wife tried the same one and she's still smoking. So again, everyone's different.

And once I gave it up I used to look down on smokers and make fun of the whiners who say they can't quit. But I was one of them, and it's very easy to say 'it's easy to quit' when you're not addicted.

Man, I was just going to flame you for making a stupid assumption and look, I wrote an "Opinions-Forum" speech. Oh well, kepp it in mind for next time.

i never have smoked anything and never will. it's nasty, smells terrible, and very unhealthy.

You didn't pay for the cigarette so why would you do that? It's very hard for someone to quit and if you just stomp out their smoke all they are going to do is get mad. Smokers, as I've seen, are friendly people. If you look like you need a cigarette they will give you one, need a light? no problem, you just ran out of cigarettes? They'll give you one. By asking for a drag and then throwing it out you are just showing that you are a bastard and taking advantage of their good graces...how are they to know you are not a smoker?

Seriously if you don't like smoking that is fine, I wish I didn't. But I don't see how it bothers anyone if you are outside or in a smoking area. I mean if you don't want to be around there are plenty of places you can go and enjoy a smoke free experience.

So, you're saying that it's totally okay to be forced to move because someone who couldn't handle peer pressure back then, and wasn't strong enough to quit now, is blowing out his/her poisonous smoke in the air which you are about to breathe in settling a bunch of nasty stuff in your lungs?

Sorry can't do it... I've been around people that do my whole life and I've only come to one conclusion. They keep doing it they'll die and I don't care what you say or they say they are addicted. Social smoking? Only smoking when with friends? lol give me a break. I've heard people say oh yeah I'm going to quick or they go x amount of time without smoking and what happens, they go back. Yes, there are rare people that do quit but only after they've had a major health problem like a heart attack for them to quit. My dad was one of those people and my aunt another with her "stint" put in.

Maybe I've been brainwashed by all these don't smoke ads thoughout my life but that's besides the point. Lets think about the common sense (or lack there of) with smoking.

Smoke coming out of a persons area that they breath though that make it so you arn't dead... uh yeah... NOT NORMAL.

Fire near someones breathing area that make it so you arn't dead... uh yeah... NOT NORMAL.

Coughing... uh yeah... bud your body is coughing for a reason. xD

Then there's stuff I've only heard about like coughing up a lung, hair ball like? Again... your body is doing it for a reason.

So, lets review... Why do you smoke? How are you not addicted?

(this is not directed toward anyone in particular, it's what goes though my head when I see or hear about someone smoking)

The one thing that pisses me off about nicotine is that I have one best friend (and his wife) that smoke as well as another friend that does chewing tobacco (which is even more gross) And I have watched them throw their lives away (used to be active people) as well as later on (if they don't stop) prematurely die. I can tell them to stop until I'm blue in the face and it won't make a damn bit of difference...

I can't stand people who smoke, that includes my girlfriend.
I just don't want them to be near me when they smoke their cancer-sticks.

The guy I work with smokes 3 packs a day.

4 when he's having a bad day. I feel like I'm choking around him, but if he doesn't have cigarettes, he gets really irritated at everything. Luckily I'm only working there for a week or so and then I'm gone.

I've never smoked but i've been thinking about trying it. I rank cigarette smoke as my second favorite smell, behind gasoline.

I find people who heavily complain about cigarettes to be pretty idiotic. Cell phones cause cancer too, get your cancer devices away from me!!!

Anything causes cancer... these days. Does c phones cause as much health problems as smoking? hmm... yeah.

I hope there was more sarcasm there than I detected.

What bothers me most is the people that will sit there, jump on their high moral horses and look down upon others that smoke. They bitch and moan but that's all they're doing. Do you really care about your health, or is this whole thing just an easy means to get off on feeling "right" and "justified"? Are you doing anything really worthwhile like planting trees, joining a volunteer group, writing to political powers about major issues like industry emissions, buying hybrid cars, etc. or are you just sitting there pretending to care so for a quick moment you can judge someone else?

Diablo I hope you were joking. That sounded almost as bad as taking up smoking because of peer pressure (no offense).
