You paid 200 dollars for an hdmi cable... ?

What the guy right before me said. you got GYPED! I got the best monster HDMI cable money can buy for $40US (Yes it WAS worth it).

Luke

(...)
1 Monster HDMI cable = $300AU ($200US)
(...)
"I'm too cheap to pay for DLC" = PRICELESS

Interesting... the guy who says that he wouldn't mind getting ripped off got, well, ripped off. The store where I work sells Monster HDMI cables, and from what we charge for a 2m cable, you received about a fourfold price markup. If that's not something that you bought, I'd like to know what it was. If you ever see the guy who sold you the cable again, I recommend a heavy blow to the jaw.

It's a bad feeling knowing that you got ripped off, and this is exactly the same reason why many here don't want to overpay for DLC; they don't have to charge so much for it, but they do anyway. It's too bad, but that's just a part of capitalism.

Especially since tests and reviews show that it doesn't even matter what kind of HDMI cable you buy, unless it's longer than 2 meters in length. :D

I think the logical thing for PD to do is release DLC for Prologue free (given that GT5P is somewhat overpriced for its limited content), but leave a lot of content to be added when GT5 comes out. That way they get the sale of GT5P plus GT5 - charging extra for "interim" DLC seems unfair to me.

(I am not too interested in additional cars, but think we desperately need more tracks).

I see alot of disscution here about if the addon packs should be free or not,

And personaly I wouldn't mind to chip in for PD's great effort , I mean come on , they have done a great job on Gt5p.

I mean like, if there is gonna come a car / track pack, then why not chip in?, it's not like it's gonna be alot im sure.

Agreed.
Also chances are we don't even have to buy another disc for GT5, if Prologue evolved into the full game this is.
I would be happy spending some money for new tracks/ cars anyway 👍

:)
You missed my point, but yeah I like the odd pint or three. The point is that paying over the odds for the DLC is like going into a pub that is charging three times the going rate for half as much beer as the first pub, in principal anyway. However the facts are we're actually being robbed even more than that and the deleopers and publishers love the fact that many people don't care. How does pub number 2 charging £30 for half a pint sound.

If GT5 comes with 30 tracks and 370 cars and it sells for £40 you can divide that (for simplicitys sake) as each item being valued at 1p, yes 1 pence per car or track. Now realistically I'm not expecting PD or anyone for that matter to come out and say "here's a new car to download for 1p" but I do expect some value for my money. £15.50 for 31 cars in Forza 2 is simply daylight robbery.

Now forget about what you as a person are willing to pay for DLC, taking into account that what you get on the disk is worth per item (and that doesn't begin to factor in the research and development of the games engine or recouping the office running costs etc) how can someone come out and justify charging more for content that costs the same to make but is a lot cheaper to distribute? Putting your personal feelings towards the value of your own money aside, if your the sames man and I'm the punter and you're trying to charge me £5 for an addon that actually has a disk value of 20p yout yours is cheaper to distribute, and I ask why is yours so much more expensive? Giving an honest answer, what would you say?

Well I don't drink half pints, so I wouldn't go into pub number 2. :) The price of GT5 when it is released will be around £40, and considering that Kazunori has stated that there will be NEW cars that have not been in previous GT's, and also taking into account that each NEW car has to be modeled from scratch and takes several developers at PD around 3 months per car in order to achieve the quality of modeling required for the games high graphical standards, i'd say that £40 is good value for money. The amount of time, effort and money that is going into creating these cars, with the technology to perform the tasks and the man power to achieve it, it must come to a small fortune. So as you have estimated it at 1p per car, i'd say PD are being generous in charging us £40 for for the game. You may say, but PD have already charged us £20 for prologue thats only a demo, but the fact that prologue has got more content in it than most other racing games, including it's online function, kind of puts that arguement aside. Future DLC packs for GT5p/GT5 may seem over priced to some people, but it's PD's way of making some profit back on the vast amounts of money they spent on buying the rights to use the new cars, and the time and money it took to model the new cars fom scratch. Maybe the price for the DLC packs won't be as high as some people think, but however PD incorporate the DLC packs, I think it will be worth it for the further enjoyment of, what I think is a great game. :)

Zero chances. Knowing that a BD disc holds 50 or 100 GB depending on the type it's quite safe to assume GT5 is going to use at least that 50 GB. Maybe 10 GB of it is on the Prologue disc already, which leaves at least 40 GB, maybe even 90 GB, to be downloaded and installed on the hard drive. The PS3 is shipped with a 40 GB drive that has a real capacity of around 35 GB after formatting and installing the firmware. Do the maths and you'll realize that GT5P simply can't be evolved into GT5.

I know that and I already said the capacity of the harddrive would be a problem.
But the PS3 HDD can be swapped easily for a bigger one, also the new units will be 80gigs only so it's not impossible. 💡
This way they could release the disc based game later for people without highspeed internet and/or big HDDs. Very unlikely i agree, but zero chances I don't agree. :)

I don't think that there's any chance that GT5 will be some kind of free download for GT5P owners. That's why IMO it's reasonable for PD to make money from selling GT5P & GT5, but NOT from additional DLC for GT5P.

For all of you who are wondering, my example of a US$200 MONSTER Cable was just that. An example. Hehe, like I said, I'm a brokearse and can't afford that stuff, but they DO make platinum tipped triple shielded moonrock martian cables out there that are NASA standard in terms of quality and sheer purity. People with gigantic 70" TVs pay that sort of money for premium stuff.

I think you guys might be looking at this the wrong way in terms of DLC.

Could it be that $1 per car is about right and the cost of buying the GAME was the part that was ridiculously underpriced? Have a look at some of the other junk that's out there, NFS Pro Street cost 40% more than GT5P and featured less cars and marginally more circuits with a half-hashed physics system. EA made a killing out of that game.

When you really look at it and I mean SERIOUSLY look at what your money buys you for your entertainment, Gran Turismo is CHEAP. Now I don't want it to get more expensive and I'm not for making every employee in PD a billionnaire (or Sony for that matter), but take a look at what it was like years ago. The price of games hasn't gone up very much over the last 10 years. I bought GT4 Prologue for the same price that I bought GT5 Prologue. The value of the dollar has fallen no doubt in the last 5 years, but they're still charging the same amount for a product that involves MORE work and more expense.

Gaming companies aren't backyard operations these days, Kazunori has said that he has a team of 30 employees working on episodes of GT-TV. How do you pay 30 employees decent wage each week without the means to recoup that expense? It becomes a gaping hole in your budget that's what it is. And considering that you're employing an army of people to work and slave away all day on a game that won't see payday until 2010 then that means it's a VERY long time between drinks.

Work out the ecomonics of the business and then tell me that you wouldn't mind being paid once every four years. Some nutter mentioned $5 million bucks. That works out to 1.2 million a year. Employ 70 full time qualified techs and artists and you'll blow a third of that in one week!

PD are spending money hand over fist on the development costs for the updates to improve GT5p, and are running at a loss in the proccess, so charging us some money for some DLC packs is not taking the piss really, it's helping to pay the wages of the developers who are working to provide us with a more improved online experience. Plus we get the added bonus of the DLC to keep us happy until GT5, such as a few new cars and tracks. We can't expect the PD developers to provide us with free new stuff all of the time.

Its not like PD are going broke anytime soon. They sold worldwide around 50 Million copies of their games.

I dont even think they would consider making downloadebel content for GT5 P that would cost money, unless it is some way of transposing GT5 P into the full game.

You have to understand that while most of us guys here at GTPlanet would proberly buy it with out hesitating, the majority of people who bought the game is not even using this site. Maybe for every customer that bought GT5 P. 1 out of 20 is using this site, or proberly a lot less. Also there are alot of people whom, dident buy GT5 P because they are just considering it a demo.

Finally its not a question about being a cheap guy or something. Luckily for me i am kinda one of those guys who have a 46" screen + G25, and i am surely capable of buying anything i would want. Its more a matter of princip, if they started to ask money for GT5 P i would find it ridicoulus too. Instead they should focus their energy of finishing the full game.

I don't disasgree with this, I have Prologue and I didn't mind paying for it. BTW it takes a lot less than 3 months for several developers at PD to model 1 car, it's 3 months os 1 workers resources, you put 3 peoples resources into it it's 1 month 6 and it's half a month etc.

But I'm going off track, the question is personal feelings aside, how would you honestly justify charging 10's of times more for something that costs the same to make but less to distribute?

PD do not, I repeat do not need to make and sell DLC to turn a profit, they are a self sustaining under SCE's umbrella and a rather succesfull one at that. So surely and DLC they release should not be charges at rates substantially higher than the core games content value which at the end of the day, despite being substantially cheaper is what has been turning a profit for them for over 10 years now. I'nm not against paying for additional content, but I am against paying over the odds.

"Still, our belief is one thing -- cold hard proof is another, and it looks like a group of 12 self-professed "audiophiles" recently couldn't tell the difference between Monster 1000 speaker cables and plain old coat hangers. Yeah, coat hangers. The group was A-Bing different cables, and unbeknownst to them, the engineer running the test swapped out a set of cables for coat hangers with soldered-on speaker connections. Not a single one was then able to tell the difference between the Monster Cable and the hangers, and all agreed that the hangers sounded excellent."

edit: and further more:
"Reportedly, GizmoRepublic walked into an unspecified "big box store" and went to check out a display touting the superiority of Monster cabling. Upon further inspection, he realized that the difference in picture quality wasn't due to the gold-plating or fancy braiding, but rather the use of composite cables on the non-Monster TV. "

Which is why I buy no-name HDMI cables and cheap component cables too. For speaker wire, I spent a lil extra on getting something with decent insulation (like $35 for 100 feet or something like that).

I read on a website some time ago that it took 3 developers 3 months to create 1 car for GT5p/GT5, but I can't recall which site it was, but if you click this link it will take you to a site where kazunori states that it takes 1 developer 180 days to create 1 car for GT5p/GT5. http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/yamauchi-reveals-gt5-details-to-car-and-driver/
So in fact it would therefore take 2 developers 3 months to develop 1 car. I don't agree that it costs 10's more to pay for DLC than it does to produce it, it obviously would cost more, but then all companys have to make a profit for the product they supply to the public. I don't think PD are out to rip us off. If a 2 car DLC pack became available, then what would you be prepared to pay for it? Taking into account that those 2 cars took 2 developers 6 months to complete, and lets say that those developers monthly salarys were £60,000 combined. Thats a lot of work and a lot of money to produce just 2 cars. I didn't say that PD NEED to sell DLC to make a profit, but if they do provide DLC, then they have to make a profit on it. You use the word substantial profit, but thats just speculation at the moment because we don't know how PD are going to offer the DLC, it may be single cars, or single tracks, or a mix of both. If you wan't my own personal opinion on how much i'd pay for a 2 car DLC pack, if they were 2 cars that were only available through DLC, and they were 2 of my favourite all time cars, then i'd pay at least £10.

We will be getting charged for DLC from August onwards through GT-TV. PD have recently stated that they will be soley concentrating on GT5p for some time, which means we will have to wait to late 2009, early 2010 for the full game, which is a bummer.

First off, the figures I'm speculating about are based on figures used for DLC already available, for example Forza 2 was charing £5 for 10 cars, that is a substantial profit for Turn10 when you compare that the core game came with 300 cars and yet that cost only £40, for £40 DLC you would get 80 cars. Now say what you want, but £40 for 80 cars content and that is all, just content seperate from the game is a rip off. Take GT5:P the game comes with 5 tracks and lets say 70 cars, I can't recal the exact number but it' around that. So that is beside the rest of the game, 75 units of content. So you take thoes 75 units and divide them by the cost of the game, which leaves you with 0.26666 or 27 pence per unit in GT5:P's case. So at the very most, what you are paying per car in GT5:P is just under 27 pence. If PD came out and said here's 2 cars to download for £10 which you've jsut said you're okay with, fogive my maths, but that is a substantial increase over 27 pence. Remember also that retailing the game with this ammount of content with this value per unit of content still turns a profit for PD.

Ontop of that, a large part of the £20 cost of GT5:P goes to the shops and towards packaging and distribution. these are things that DLC doesn't have to go through, meaning the only charges are related to the costs of hosting the content on a server, which is very cheap for PD to do. Ofcourse you have to factor into DLC' prices the fact that not everyone with the game will buy it, to turn a profit they will have to recoup a certain cost.

So now we have in game content valued at 27p per item, DLC that at 27p provides PD with a higher markup than the ingame content but it has a lower expectation of sales volume. So you take that 27p and let's say they estimate half the number of people who own the game will buy the conents, they could price it at 54p per item. At 54p per item, if half the number of game owners buy it PD are making more than the same profit per item they provide on the disk.

A fair price for per car downloads is imo in the region of 20-25p per car and 30-45p per track. Because of the lack of packaging, distribution and sales costs PD make more of a markup also the original 27p per item price covers the wohle game the realisty is that each iteam is worth less than that when you take percentages of price off for other things like research of physics, development of the game engine itself, advertising the game etc. The actual disk value of these items is more likey to be closer to 10p per item when everything else is factored in.

You keep going round in circles and finding ways to dodge the fact that DLC costs less to get to the user than disk content does, the fact developers are often charging a lot more. Developers like PD don't have 2 people working on each car and that is it, they have 20 people working on the cars, the cars are built very quick. Do you thin if it was a literal 3 months per car GT5 would ever see the light of day. It would take decades to finish, even GT5:P would take seveal years just to create the cars we currently have. PD has simply used a common stratergy to say "look guys, what we're doing takes a lot of resources", the reality is yes they do, but it's not a literal figure he's throwing around it's an if figure.
One final bit of math, lets just say PD release a car that cost them £10,000 to license and model it overall costs, so PD spent £10,000.
They release that car fr £1 and 1 million people download it, PD have made £990,000 profit from a £10,000 initial cost.
Ofcourse they'd have to pay the costs of having the car hosted out of that profit but that's still a huge profit for 1 car.
What you're saying is you'd be happy to pay £5 per car if it iwas a car you really wanted, that would net PD a £4,990,000 profit before hosting costs.
At 20p per car, that car would net PD £190,000 profit, still a substantial profit. They're still making more than enogh to survive and remember this is proft per million cars downloaded. If PD relsease a 10 car pack for £2 and 1 million people download it (and at £2 that's very likely) then PD have made £1,990,000.
Are you still prepared to call DLC good value, to say that I am not right when I say it is legal robbery. You candouble, or even treble the costs of PD licensing and modelling the car and they're still raking it in at 20p per car.

Without dodging the fact that DLC costs less to get to you or me or anyone else online, how is charing so much more for it justifiable? Paying ewages isn't a valid reason, PD pay the wages on the disk sales, and I've already worked out that the content on disk sales has a very low value. so how can you justify it?

We will be getting charged for DLC from August onwards through GT-TV. PD have recently stated that they will be soley concentrating on GT5p for some time, which means we will have to wait to late 2009, early 2010 for the full game, which is a bummer.

Sure charging for the TV content is ok by me. Since it is not really a part of real game the game as i see it. I see it more as and aditional feature and a channel where they can show of demos and such, and if people want to download topgear here well its a bomus to be able to do it, but honestly this feature should not be given so much priorety.

Anyway I havent seen any concrete place where it was mentioned that they plan to make downloadebel content for GT5 P that was not free. In fact I higly doubt it will ever happend. I dont know who has started the rumour that there will come downloadeble content for GT prologue. I may be wrong but if anyone has a link to and official statement about it I would like to see it.

I think what will happend is we will get the update 1 August. wich as i see it is more or less useless. There are still no private races, and or ways to make races with more laps and stuff like that. There is really no new content, track or car wise. There are mentioned they have improved physics well thats great.

Then we will get a free update later this year. Where it will most likely come a few new tracks + cars, and update to the online section, private races. This is the only update I am really wanting.

I think then at some point next year we will get another free update.

And then the game will be relased late 2009, or early 2010.

Anyway it is all speculation I could be wrong. The fact is noone really knows what are the plans. I am kinda not even sure PD them self know :)

PD has simply used a common stratergy to say "look guys, what we're doing takes a lot of resources", the realisty is yes they do, but it's not a literal figure he's throwing around it's an if figure.

without dodging the fact that DLC costs less to get to you or me or anyone else online, how is charing so much more for it justifiable? Paying ewages isn't a valid reason, PD pay the wages on the disk sales, and I've already worked out that the content on disk sales has a very low value. so how can you justify it?

Here's how I justify it. DLC is a luxury item that not everyone that has the game will buy. If you really want the extra cars, you will buy it. If you don't, you won't. There are plenty of competitive cars already in the game, so more cars won't unbalance the game. I understand that you want them to just give you the content, and I do too, but that isn't how the world works. Even if they made it really really really really cheap, not everyone would buy it, so they have to find a balance where they can charge enough to make up for the people that don't buy it. It works on a sliding scale, the more they charge the less people will buy, and at some point on that curve there is a spot where they can maximize profitability.

Basically, you wan't something for nothing. Were going round in circles here because you can't grasp the fact that gaming is a multi billion pound industry, of which PD is part of it. They're in the business to make high quality games, and to make their profits from that. Don't want the games, don't buy them, don't want the DLC thats made available for those games, then don't buy it, simple. All people from all walks of life have a hobby that they enjoy, and a lot of those people spend a lot of money towards their hobby because it makes them happy. I enjoy gaming very much, and I have spent a lot of money on it. the day I start moaning about the cost of my hobby, is the day I give it up.

PD are spending money hand over fist on the development costs for the updates to improve GT5p, and are running at a loss in the proccess, so charging us some money for some DLC packs is not taking the piss really, it's helping to pay the wages of the developers who are working to provide us with a more improved online experience.

Added to that Sony themselves will take their cut from any revenue that comes through the PSN and it really isn't that unrealistic to be paying a small amount for some new stuff. 👍

I'm not asking for if's and why's on why, whether and when people actualy pay for DLC. I'm meerly debating the justification of the prices. I know it's about maximising profit, but in doing this the punters get royally shafted in terms of true item value. I know that I'm not likely to see the prices I referred to as good value imo, but that doesn't amke my point any less valid or correct.

I've actually edited my last post to include some basic profts for volume sales of DLC, PD make a profit either way, all I'm doing is showing people how unfair the prices actually are. I don't care if someone wants to pay over the odds for something, I pay over the odds for things form time to time myself. What I really don't get is people who are not only happy with pricing, but would be happy to be ripped off even more. It's fair to say that the general consensus is that the ideal situation would be free downloads, free for you, free for me. As ideal for us as that would be, it's not realsistic and most people in this thread realise as much. What I don't get is people happily setting the prices they'd be willing to pay as high as £5 per car. The fact that people are willing to pay £5 for 10 cars is one thing, but people justifying the concept of potential prices like that for GT5 content on PD's behalf doesn't make sense.

Ofcourse it's important to remember that this entire debate I'm having with GT_Fanatic is based on nothing but potential pricing and speculation. I'm simply arguing a point of value for money.

EDIT: And no GT_Fanatic, I don't want something for nothing, if you read my posts you'd see that. In fact a brief persual of my psts would see many referrences to a fair price. The conept of paying a fair price does not equal something for nothing, please do not twist my words and do not put words in my mouth. The discussion has been interesting so far, don't ruin it at the end. You have sidestepped every point I've made and simply returned to the point that PD need to make a profit. Yes they do and I never dissagreed, the question is, how much of a profit do they need to make and how much of a profit is fair for them to make before thier pricing structure become unfair to the punters.

I've already agreed that the current pricing for DLC is way overpriced, but if people are willing to pay for it then they are charging the right price. Your problem is with consumers, not the gaming companies.

I paid £3000 for my Bravia 1080p TV. did I get ripped off dave? because I know that it cost Sony a fraction of that to make it. Maybe I should write to the CEO of Sony and tell him how much of an Ahole he is for having the nerve to make a profit.

What has expensive HDTV's got to do with overpriced DLC? This isnt a question of whether they should make a profit (as Dave A actually said) but a question of how much profit.

Dave, i'm not twisting your words, or putting words in your mouth. We have our opposing opinions on this issue of pricing and profit making. The true fact is that the prices are what they are and the gaming industry isn't going to change their pricing and lose their profits, so it's a case of accepting that fact and buying the products at the price they are being sold at, or going without. I would rather pay less, everybody would, but thats the cost of things these days. I wanted a massive 1080p TV, so I paid the asking price for it. It cost substantialy less to make that TV, but I paid because I couldn't get it cheaper anywhere else.
