Alright, here goes nothing
Since i was a little kid I've always loved cars. By the age of 3 i knew basically every brand. My Grandpa and i used to go out on walks looking at cars going by just for fun (he was a car mechanic) I've collected models of cars and got more than 200 unopened boxes. During Christmas 1997 when i was 9 i got a PS1 with GT1 as a Christmas present. So basically I've been playing the GT series from the start. I loved every moment of it.
Before GT5 was released i watched a lot of Top Gear episodes and saw them driving around on their track with various beautiful cars just power-sliding all over the track. This was what i imagined for GT5. On November 24th around 9.45 am i took my boring Volvo S60 down to the store, even though my car is boring i was smiling, i was going to buy the game I've been highly anticipating, for a long time. Once i got home i ripped the plastic off the case and put the disc in, i was ready to play! Unfortunately there was a tiny installation that needed to be done
After about an hour the intro movie went on and i was sitting there like a little kid on Christmas.
So, i bought myself a Honda Civic and started racing and i basically haven't stopped ever since. It's a wonderful game, I love the huge variety of cars, i love that they all feel different, sound different and many of them look stunningly good. But most of all i love that you can pick out any car in your garage and just take it for a spin. You can tweak the car, perhaps not as much as in GT4 for instance but still it gives you a sense of freedom. I've only played this with a SixAxis but i bet its even better with a wheel.
However it's not perfect. The GFX are not entirely what i was looking for after 5 or 6 years of development, with screen tearing and flimsy shadows. Unconvincing damage and from time to time the AI is a bit weak as well. The fact that PD made all the Expert and Extreme races with no driving aids and manual shifting shows that to get the best experience you need a racing wheel since its pretty hard to control the throttle with a button. Since I cant afford a wheel, I don't get to experience the game as it should be.
Anyway, if you love racing, if you love cars. You gotta love GT5.
I know i do.
Sorry about the bad English, as it's not my native language i could only do so well, hope it's readable.
Thanks a lot Kai for the opportunity, hope you enjoy the read.
Best Regards: Tomas
