Marketing people know what they are doing and it's more than common sense(they go to college for it after all).

That doesn't mean they're any good at it. I remember having to take a foundation in management, accounting and in safety - it's mostly common sense (of course, it still has to occur to you) and I felt thoroughly patronised. Of course, there are special tricks, new trends etc. to take account of, but this comes from people's innovative nature and their ingenuity, not from some cobbled together college / university module - most of what you'd learn there is the old "tried and true" methods - useful, sure, but not really going to rock the boat, eh?

So your basing your entire opinion on an entire "career" based on what I assume is intro courses?

That's like saying all math is easy because Algebra I was a cinch. Of course the intro classes are mostly going to be common sense things, however the classes after that aren't.

Actually, I think he is saying that just because you went to college or did some course, regardless of the level, it does not make you an expert. There is no substitute for common sense and life experience. People leave Uni with degrees and whatnot and think they know everything...then they get a job. Reality is (often) very different.

Yes, but common sense and experience will only get you so far, you need to be smart and know what you are doing(combined with common sense and experience) to really get anywhere.

Agree, although that still isn't a guarantee a big corporation which makes a lot of money can't make an enormous cock up.
It was made big by smart bussiness people or clever entrepreneurs in the beginning, but once it has become big it takes on a dynamic all of its own including sometimes hiring incompetent marketing people ( university degree or not ) by misstake.

But because these companies are so enormous and make such enormous amount of money those occassional misstakes are just taken for granted unlike a small company where those misstakes are lethal.

And GT is different from say FIFA 10 which is made to sell the most units in its first year after which it is replaced, or a game based on a current popular movie like Avatar which sells mainly on hype created by that movie.
GT is a longterm investment which generates income consistently during a lifespan of several years.

And you don't need a University degree to figure that out.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I was getting at ;)

Even (especially?) engineering degrees, you don't know 🤬 until you've been out there and seen and done it 👍
At least, that's how it is in the UK.

I'm pretty sure that common sense is a part of being "smart" - just the same as social skills, number skills, logic etc. etc. are all part of it, too.

Back on topic, as GT5 is probably getting a worldwide release the whole summer release being unfortunate saleswise is less relevant as for some nations Christmas falls into the summer season.

Even if it were unfortunate to release a big game in the midst of summer saleswise it might be sensible from a marketing point of view as the "early adopters" might be used testing for glitches, bugs, etc. which could be patched when the holiday season begins.
You could then get the whole advertising mode in full swing again after the first round in summertime.

About it eventually being released, everybody seems to point to an event like E3 for more info or launch date, but could it also be possible to look for events other than purely focussed on games, namely car-related events?
The biggest motorsport event with a worldwide audience which is also heavily featured within GT has to be the Le Mans 24 hour race in June which is also sponsored by PD and Sony for years and years.
Has anyone got thoughts on this?

My guess is October. By then, 3DTV's would have been in the market for about 4 months, so more sales for GT5.

Definitely after E3. Definitely after the racing season is over. Gran Turismo 5 could have a serious impact on ticket sales for motorsporting events around the world.

PD's new campaign Why watch it when you can play it.

That's my thoughts

Although a nice slogan, i doubt people are less prone to visiting motorsport-events after GT5 is released.
However the amount of people watching motorsport on TV could reduce somewhat, but not anything drastically.
If i watch a real motorsport event on TV i often find myself turning off halfway and wanting to play GT either because i'm inspired but more often because i'm just bored.

When hell freezes over???...Nah, I kid the 5-year waiting GT-Fan :)

October at the beginning of 4th quarter to make sure they have good fiscal results for Christmas.

More guesses?

Seems like almost everyone is pointing October as a feasible date, also, there are many reasons to happen in the 4th quarter as many guys here mentioned.

sad to say but It might be a 2011 launch or converted to a ps4 launch title. What a joke

October is the beginning of Japan's 3rd Fiscal quarter.

im hoping July, to coincide with the wonders of summer Holidays!

Amazon just sent me an email about my pre order and it stated that due to new information from the publisher, the estimate date of arrival has changed from 11/1 to 11/16 - 11/22. I still think Novemebr is accurate for a release date.

Just got the same message from Amazon:

The release date for the video game listed below has been changed by the publisher, and we want to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:

"Gran Turismo 5"
Release date: November 01 2010
Estimated arrival date: November 16 2010 - November 22 2010

I would like to change my vote to Febtober, but I don't see it on the list.

I think Manuary should become an official month. Manuary, yeah. Ladies get Valentines day, men get a whole month.
