EA says not many games will come out on it, but there will be more games from EA coming out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 folks.

I'm very surprised that Nintendo didn't use E3 to announce the official name for the "Revolution" - Wii. I wonder how much Wii there'll be at E3?

I'll get my coat....

Pre-E3 2006: Halo 3 at E3

Microsoft to show Halo footage at E3 news briefing.

With Microsoft, the rumors are always true. The next iteration in Bungie Studios' Halo series will appear at E3 2006 in video form at its Tuesday, May 9 news conference, IGN learned today from independent sources who recently spoke with Microsoft executives.

The video is allegedly two minutes long, although its contents weren't divulged. We're guessing a wild breathtaking battle on Earth. Knowing Microsoft, the publisher will want to show all real, in-game engine footage.

When Microsoft was contacted, the company issued its standard reply, "We don't comment on speculation and rumors."

E3 is where console manufacturers, publishers, and developers lay down their best hand for hopes of creating buzz and interest leading into the fall season. And E3 2006 is perhaps one of the most crucial for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, as each stakes their plot in the next-generation landscape.

Diehard Halo fans shouldn't be too surprised. Bungie is notorious for taking its time, and the game is not likely to come out until 2007. Microsoft's most valuable franchise has been out of the limelight since last year's Map Pack, a set of additional multiplayer maps for 2004's Halo 2. Microsoft has edged away from talking about the next Halo all year long, except to acknowledge Founder Bill Gates' cautionary statements to Sony, claiming that when Sony readies PS3, Halo 3 will launch day and date with it. Microsoft since retracted the statement, claiming Halo 3 will be ready when Bungie is finished.

Recently, however, the company has started to roll up its proverbial Halo sleeves again, acknowledging Halo 3's existence. Microsoft Game Studios' General Manager Shane Kim, in a conversation with New Zealand Website Stuff.co.nz, said:

"You mean the mythical Halo 3? I mean, it's silly to deny its existence when the chairman of MS (Bill Gates) announced it, but I have nothing to announce now, but expect there to be a significant announcement at E3."

Pro Evo 6: First showing at E3!

Konami and 'Seabass' set to reveal next-gen incarnation of Pro Evo at this year's E3

As if we weren't already salivating enough at the prospect of E3 and all those games looming on the horizon, Konami has just announced that, for the first time ever, it will be debuting a Pro Evo Soccer game - normally reserved for its own autumnal Pro Evo extravaganza - at the US event.

Cited to be "one of several key releases on the Konami stand", Pro Evo 6 will be presented to the masses by its producer and creator, Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka, on his first ever trip to E3.

Takatsuka has promised to reveal more details about the new additions to the game - some of which he dangled before us back in October last year, including the possibility of 11-versus-11 player online action and an online version of the master league.

We'll be taking a closer look at Pro Evo 6 at E3 in May - you'll know the score just as soon as we do.

Ok one of the demos from E3, which will be uploaded to Live during E3 is Lost Planet. And the place where I heard this from is on the lastest Lost Planet trailer on Live.

Analysts offer E3 preview

Michael Wallace and Stephen Tam with UBS Securities give investors a heads-up on what they expect from next week's big show.

UBS Securities analysts Michael Wallace and Stephen Tam have released an investor preview for next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo, and the pair is making some interesting calls on the industry's near- and long-term future.

Heading into the next-generation of console wars, Wallace and Tam caution that the coming battle won't be waged like the last one. With the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 priced higher than consoles in years past, the pair expects fewer gamers to own both platforms, while Nintendo's Wii is a unique enough piece of hardware that companies won't be able to blindly port titles to it from other platforms.

"How the software companies fare over the next several years will not be simply a matter of mass-producing games across all platforms," the report states. "They have to make the right choices and support the right platforms, since there is no clear-cut winner in the hardware market like there was in 2000 when Sony launched the [PlayStation 2]. Guessing the installed bases for each platform is harder than it's been in the past."

As for what is expected at the show, they break it down by console. Despite Sony's assertion at the Game Developers Conference 2006 that Warhawk will be playable at the event, they don't expect the PS3 to be playable, and they don't expect Sony to put a price tag on the console yet.

"More importantly, what we will be looking for is what kind of software there is for the PS3 and how far along it is," they write. "There is still a lot of frustration from third parties regarding Sony development kits and their ability to get quality software done in time for the launch."

On the PlayStation Portable front, Wallace and Tam are expecting a hard drive-equipped version of the system to debut. And while they're also projecting a price cut in the works, they say Sony might put it off until closer to Thanksgiving.

Moving to Microsoft, Wallace and Tam are focusing on how it can take the best advantage of its year-long head start in the console wars. The note says the keys for getting people to jump on the 360 instead of waiting for a PS3 are "momentum and more software, pure and simple."

As for countering the PS3 launch this fall, they suggest the software giant might lower the price of the Xbox 360 by somewhere between $50 and $100. They also expect Microsoft to show its HD-DVD add-on at the show, although they don't expect the add-on to have an impact on the format's struggle with Blu-ray for market supremacy.

Turning to Nintendo, the company's redubbing of the Revolution as the "Wii" hasn't gone over too well with Wallace and Tam, though, ultimately, they don't believe it matters. "Seems like a kiddie name to us, but if people like the games, who cares what it is called," they remark.

They project a fall release at a $199 price point for the Wii, with Nintendo's other existing hardware making some news as well. Wallace and Tam peg June as a possible release date for the Nintendo DS Lite, and they expect a GameCube price cut to $79, possibly to take effect during the show itself.

While they don't venture a guess as to the ultimate winners and losers in this round of console wars, Wallace and Tam are positive on the Wii and favor it to gain some market share for Nintendo this time around.

"All the signs are pointing to a Nintendo revival with what they are doing in the console market," they suggest. "The company has a great chance to expand out of its kids-only market and gain a bigger piece of the cross-ownership pie among platforms."

As for specific reasons why, they expect much better third-party support than the GameCube received because of cheaper, simpler development compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3. And given the Wii's unique controller, they expect more Wii-exclusive titles from the third parties. However, they insist Nintendo needs to do a better job supporting the console with its own games than it did for the GameCube launch.

"In order to succeed, we need to see real first-party support early in the system launch window. This means that we need more games like the groundbreaking Mario 64 for the N64. At the show, we will be looking for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, and other staples of the Nintendo lineup."

The pair also offers their take on what some publishers will be showing at the expo, and while most of the games they expect are a given to appear (Gears of War, Killzone for PS3), there are some notable exceptions. For one, they expect the next Halo to be featured at the show (not a big stretch, but still not something Microsoft has confirmed). They also mention a Tony Hawk Downhill Jam in Activision's roster, noting that it will be a brand extension intended to target younger consumers.

Despite all the excitement about next-gen systems, the pair still expects the current industry-wide, transition-year slump to continue for 12 more months. They also expect it will be that long before Sony has enough supply to meet demand for the PS3.

* A Backstage Pass to see developers preparing for E3

You could always come to my office. Not exciting, but you could. :D

I'm not in a typical E3 place this year, though. My testing lab is verifying my build today, and I'm done. Contrast this with most E3 years, I'm running around in a tizzy for the 2 weeks prior to E3. This year? One day of special features (E3 UI), and wrap 'er up.

This is the best E3 evar from my perspective.

Pandemic lets slip Mercenaries 2

Cash-for-kills sequel confirmed by the developer, which is said to be building the new game from scratch

Developer Pandemic Studios has finally blown the lid off the expected Mercenaries 2 - subtitled World in Flames - the sequel to its freeform action game Mercenaries that caused quite a stir on current-gen consoles.

Specific details on Mercenaries 2 are a little thin on the ground but, according to reports, Pandemic is building the sequel's 'playground of destruction' from scratch to take full advantage of next-generation technology. No mention of platforms has been made, but Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are a pretty safe bet, with the developer possibly showering PC with Mercenaries love this time around too.

We'll find out more on Mercenaries 2: World in Flames at E3 next week, but in the meantime here's comment from Pandemic Studios CEO Andrew Goldman on the follow-up:

"While the original Mercenaries' high-octane, go anywhere, do anything and blow the crap out of everything style was a hit with gamers, the whole experience was screaming to run on next-generation game systems... And while we're building on the core mercenary experience we created for the original, we've taken full advantage of next-gen technology to offer a more richly detailed, reactive, living world than gamers have ever seen before."

Mystery game, Wii Rayman, Red Steel lead Ubisoft's E3 lineup

Unnamed next-gen Free Radical to be unveiled in LA next week; joins Brothers in Arms sequel, Assassin's Creed, Dark Messiah, two Wii launch titles, and others.

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo now exactly one week away, the trickle of publishers announcing their game lineups for the event is fast becoming a deluge. French publisher Ubisoft was the latest to reveal which games it will be showing off at the event--and its roster has some surprises.

Ubisoft also used today's announcement to unveil the new Rayman game from King Kong and Beyond Good & Evil designer Michel Ancel. First revealed early last month, the game will sport the alliterative moniker Rayman Raving Rabbids and will be a launch title for the Nintendo Wii. Previously, Ubisoft had said only that the game was in development at Ubisoft's Montpellier studio for "current and next-generation consoles" and would ship this coming holiday season.

Besides promising that the Wii version of the game would use the platform's "innovative controller," Ubisoft dropped some plot details about Rayman Raving Rabbids. "When the world of Rayman is threatened by a devastating invasion of crazed, out-of-control bunnies Rayman must rise up against his furry foes to foil their wicked plans," the company said in a statement. The game will allow Rayman to "control various creatures such as sharks, eagles, rhinos, spiders" in large-scale free-roaming environments in his quest to defeat his carrot-addled foes.

Another major event that will go down at Ubisoft's booth is the unveiling of the new game from Free Radical, developer of the popular TimeSplitters series. Little is known about the project, which was first announced last November, other than that it will be an all-new intellectual property and will ship for next-generation consoles and PCs during Ubisoft's current financial year, which ends in March 2007.

Rounding out Ubisoft's E3 lineup is the Wii-only slasher-shooter Red Steel, and Enchanted Arms, the Japanese Xbox 360 role-playing game from From Software. The medieval action game Assassin's Creed, which was just reannounced for the PlayStation 3 after being previously shown off at the 2005 Tokyo Game Show.

There will also be forthcoming installments in several staple Ubisoft franchises, including Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent, and Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway. But while all three are being released for various platforms--including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3--Ubisoft did not specify which versions of the games would be playable at the event. (Platforms mentioned below are for reference only.)

UBISOFT'S E3 2006 LINEUP

Assassin's Creed (PS3, Xbox 360 - 2007)
Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway (PC, PS3, Xbox 360 - Q4 2006)
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (PC - Q3 2006)
Enchanted Arms (Xbox 360 - Q2 2006)
"Game to be Unveiled" (Free Radical's next-gen console/PC project - TBA)
Open Season (PC, PS2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, DS, Game Boy Advance - September 2006)
Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii and "current and next-gen consoles"- Holiday 2006)
Red Steel (Wii - Holiday 2006)
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent (PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube - September 2006)

F.E.A.R. officially spooking Xbox 360

Monolith's impressive PC FPS finally confirmed for Microsoft's next-gen console

Well, we can't say we were particularly overcome with shock and surprise when this one reached our ears, but Vivendi has officially announced that it's bringing Monolith's acclaimed PC first-person shooter F.E.A.R. to Xbox 360 - and it's going to happen this autumn.

The news is likely to cause delirious paroxysms of joy to 360 owners who've been twitching for more quality shooter action since hanging up controllers on Far Cry Instincts Predator. What's more, in anticipation of F.E.A.R.'s official Xbox 360 unveiling, we've got the very first screenshot for you to go slack-jawed and dribbly over during the extruciating wait.

n F.E.A.R., players strap on the combat boots of a member of a classified strike team attempting to discover what the hell is going on in a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound where, among other things, a crack Special Forces unit has been brutally annihilated. Action is delivered in spades, with a hefty dose of horror added that'll make your underpants fly off in fright.

There's not much more to add, other than to say that the game's set for the full royal treatment at this year's E3, kicking off next week - and we'll be on-hand to give you the full low-down on the title.

Sega and PGR dev reveal top secret project!

Welcome to The Club, a third-person action-shooter spraying bullets on next-generation console

Sega and Project Gotham Racing dev Bizarre Creations have finally blown the lid off the top secret project the two have been collaborating on. Called The Club (working title), it's a third-person shooter heading to next-generation platforms, Bizarre describing the game as a "gritty and frenetic modern day gun game based around an illegal underground game of death taking place in a range of evocative locations from around the globe."

Sounds a bit like a mixture of movies The Running Man, Fight Club, Battle Royale and The Game.

"The Club is a loosely organised and highly illegal underground entity", Sega has further explained. "The Club is a meeting ground for those seeking the ultimate in vicarious thrills, and those who want to watch them. You have been entered into the sport, and against the odds must fight for survival. Set in a variety of unusual and evocative locations scattered across the globe, you will be wielding high-powered weaponry in a bid to earn your escape. Your first task is to survive, but you must kill according to their rules - quickly, relentlessly and with style."

Bizarre is apparently redefining and refreshing the mechanics of the third-person shooter genre with The Club. In addition, there's talk of the game focusing on "addictive and rewarding gameplay", with player skills tested to the limit and the title steaming along at a relentless pace "never before seen within the genre".

Want more potential hyperbole? "Offering frantic, fast paced gameplay with a unique style, tone and storyline that drips with energy, attitude and anarchy, The Club will be a genuine showcase for the capabilities of the next-gen platforms by maximising the graphical and audio technology available to give a gameplay experience that is second to none."

Well, some major boasts there, and whether this is indeed all hyperbole or these grand claims about The Club are on the money will be discovered at E3 next week, where the game is being presented by Bizarre Creations behind closed doors. Oh, and if your name's not on the list, then you'll have to settle for a video that'll be running on the show floor for all and sundry.

Sony lines up for E3

Expo PS2 and PSP games revealed - not one single slither of a sausage regarding PS3 stuff though

While we all wait with bated breath for some kind of tangible information on the forthcoming PS3 (presumably all unravelling at Sony's big press jamboree this coming Monday), the company has unveiled its E3 line-up for PS2 and PSP.

It's all fairly as-expected with showings for high-profile titles like God of War II, SOCOM PSP, Gangs of London and LocoRoco - most of which we've seen in some guise or other already. Quite whether this means there'll be no monster revelations for Sony's existing consoles is unclear - let's be honest though, it'd take something pretty astonishing to make any kind of audible squeal against PS3's thunder.

Here's what Sony's announced so far:

ATV Offroad Fury 4 (PS2)
Gangs of London (PSP)
God of War II (PS2)
Killzone: Liberation (PSP)
Lemmings (PSP)
LocoRoco (PSP)
NBA '07 (PS2 & PSP)
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP)
Rogue Galaxy (PS2)
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2 (PSP)
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault (PS2)
World Tour Soccer '06 (PSP)

We'll be screaming round the show floor from Wednesday next week, with ne'er a pause for breath or tinkle. You can expect to hear much more on Sony's line-up as things get underway, so keep your eyes locked in this direction for all the latest.

E3 06: Sony launches new teaser campaign

One year after the infamous "Welcome Chang3" campaign, Sony is once again plastering the LACC with mysterious advertisements.

Last year, journalists who arrived early for the Electronic Entertainment Expo glimpsed the first clues that the event had a momentous announcement in store. Until then, Sony had maintained a monastic level of silence regarding its next-generation console. The device didn't have a name yet, and reps for the electronics giant shot down any inquiry about the unnamed device with the refrain "Sony has not made any announcements regarding PS3." (Sony used PS3 as shorthand in correspodence, but insisted it was not an official name.)

That official wall of silence showed its first cracks the weekend before E3. As a small army of roadies set up dozens of multimillion dollar displays inside the Los Angeles Convention Center, Sony was busy plastering the outside with massive billboards saying "Welcome Chang3." The words were written in the distinctive PlayStation 2 font, and were next to partially obscured recreations of the PlayStation's emblematic triangle-circle-square-X buttons.

Not only were the "Welcome Chang3" ads on the LACC's exterior, they also appeared inside bus shelters around the massive venue and, most eerily, on stickers stuck to the screens of televisions inside game journalists' hotel rooms.

Within days of the ads going up, Sony officially unveiled--and named--the PlayStation 3 in a press conference which remains controversial to this day. One year later, the Japanese electronics giant appears to be up to the same tricks. Once again, Sony has covered the area around the LACC with a series of ads. But while the "Chang3" ads were pretty obvious, the new campaign is taking a more subtle tack.

The most obvious ads are a series of massive billboards prominently visible from the LACC's main entrance. One shows a surrealistic take on a game of rock-paper-scissors--with the person making "scissors" actually having steel blades for fingers, and the person making "rock" actually having a stone fist.

Another ad, which covers one side of the neighboring Staples Center, shows a massive canyon with a person in the upper-right-hand corner who looks as though he's about to jump off a cliff. Two ads on nearby triangular kiosks show similar scenes of extreme outdoor activity: one of a woman traversing a series of gymnastic rings above a red-hot lava floe, another of someone playing on a swing--underneath a structure resembling the 630-foot St. Louis Arch.

All four of these ads have two things in common--they each have the words "Play Beyond" on the top and the PlayStation logo at the bottom. However, their meaning is less clear. The most prevalent theory is that they are the beginning of the ad campaign for the PlayStation 3's online service, since they appear to be deliberately one-upping Xbox 360's current tagline, "Jump In." Others have taken the rock-paper-scissors ad as a portent that the new PlayStation 3 controller--which will be unveiled on Monday--will have some kind of motion-sensing capability like the Nintendo Wii.

However, until there is official word, these theories are just that--theories. As of press time, Sony reps were unavailable for comment. However, their meaning should be more clear on Monday afternoon following Sony's pre-E3 press conference.

PS3: Bye bye boomerang!

Sony say goodbye to the boomerang controller, new design revealed today!

If you were one of the many people who didn't think Sony's "bananarang" PS3 controller design was much cop, then stay tuned - for the big S is going to take the wraps off the final design today.

CVG will be attending Sony's pre-E3 conference today (it starts around 10pm UK time), where, amongst other juicy PS3-related titbits, we'll get our first sighting of the new joypad.

So what can we expect? Well, there's been an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the design we've already seen, with many critics attacking it for being a prime example of style over substance - so we reckon we'll see a more ergonomic, friendlier shape.

And let's face it: the Dual Shock controller (itself an evolved PS1 joypad) is a design classic, so Sony could do a lot worse than trot out a slightly modified version of that. The eight-way D-pad could be swapped with an analogue stick, and a port for a headset could be added, but apart from that there's little wrong with the existing design.

The controller will certainly be wireless, and we've heard one or two murmurs that suggest some kind of motion sensitivity might find its way in - a nod to Nintendo and its radical, revolutionary Wii controller, perhaps?

rep points given:tup:

keep the news coming...

and god, i hope they don´t f#$% the controller... the DS2 was nice... don´t change it all sony:scared:

Thank god they are changing that controller!

Just do dual shock wireless and i'l be happy.....

I cant wait till the press conferance tonight!!! we may even see what the final PS3 looks like! Better look the same! and not like a banana!

yeh cant wait much longer im busting with anticipation and im very pleased when I herd they would change the contoller, but to hear that they will be showing it at the pre E3 confrence is great.

If they keep the DS2 design they need to make it slightly bigger so I can hold it without getting cramp after 5 mins. I'm not arsed what the controller looks like, as long as it's comfier to hold than the DS2.

Im thinking it will be a happy medium between the banana controller and the DS2...... i.e. a more ergonomic shape for all sizes of hands..... or they may do what xbox did and have a small and large controller....

or, they could go insane and give us a revolution/wii style controller.....

Ok with 2 hours until the Sony Press Conference, I have just woken up. And I am ready for it.

E3 06: Xbox Live Marketplace E3 demo schedule set

Test Drive Unlimited up now, Lost Planet online tomorrow, MotoGP 06 revving up on Thursday.

Last week, Microsoft announced it was readying a wave of new content to go online during its Electronic Entertainment Expo-synchronized week of free Xbox Live. It promised a "flood" of new game demos and trailers, leading some very hopeful fans to think that maybe, just maybe, the week might see a trailer or demo of the next Halo game.

While the trailer jury is still out on that one, Microsoft announced today its demo schedule for the week. Today, Xbox 360 owners can download a sample level of Atari's Test Drive Unlimited, which will feature a racetrack on one of the Hawaiian Islands.

Tomorrow, the much-anticipated demo for Capcom's futuristic actioner Lost Planet will hit the online gaming service. Its content was unclear, as Microsoft only offered a vague general description of the demo's wintry action.

On Thursday, the demo for Moto GP 06 will go live. It was also unclear what that demo contained, as it bore the following description: "Experience extreme racing with stunning photorealistic graphics and a blisteringly fast game engine."

PS3 takes on Virtua Fighter

Fifth dose of Virtua Fighter heading to the PS3. First screens here

Sega has dealt a potentially virtual blow to rival consoles with the announcement of Virtua Fighter 5 for PS3 only. Well, 'only' thus far, at least.

The cult head-kicker-in series will entertain Sony's newbie console with a cast of 17 fighters, including two new entrants to the arena, a 'side-approaching' offensive move (extra strategy, people), and an in-game shop for pimping up money-winning combatants.

Of the two new characters, you can find Mexico's El Blaze, a master of the Lucha Libra fighting style (throwing burritos at opponents?), and China's Eileen, who battles her foes using a monkey-oriented Kung Fu system.

Elsewhere, the new offensive move enables you to approach/attack opponents from a side angle, giving you extra ways of infuriating the enemy. And winning bouts rewards you with cash, which can be spent on costumes, attachable body items and other such goodies.

Virtua Fighter 5 is being developed by Sega Studios, will support 720p resolution, and will storm onto PS3 console around spring time next year. It will also probably be a bit good. That's our gut feeling, anyway.

I had heard the PS3 controller will have triggers like the 360's. The piece also said it would'nt have any kind of vibration. I can't see that somehow...unless Immersion really have got Sony by the balls!
Wait and see, eh?

PS We can post all types of E3 news here, yeah? Well Square-Enix had a conference and, no real surprise, Final Fantasy XIII coming to PS3.www.gamespot.com

Metal Gear Solid PSP announced

Hideo Kojima announces new PlayStation Portable action title in his audio blog.

Metal Gear Solid producer Hideo Kojima has announced a brand new Metal Gear Solid game for the PlayStation Portable. In a recording on Kojima's official blog, the veteran game designerfor confirms that the title is an action game that will take place six years after Metal Gear Solid 3.

While he didn't divulge a release date for the title, Kojima did go into some detail about the gameplay and the story. Players will control a limited number of troops through a single-player game, and winning battles will increase the size of their armies. Kojima wants to make these soldiers as collectable as possible, making comparisons to cards or marbles, and once they die they do not come back.
