Embarrasingly low res cars!

I finally found a good use for Standard cars: Split-screen!
You don't have a cockpit and hood view anyway and the cars are small on the screen.

That's not so much a good use as it is a use where the flaws are hidden most ;)

But you can use the cars there without noticing the graphic flaws too much, they are great for split-screen because they give you a lot of diversity. Sound and physics are equal with the Premium cars. I didn't say I play split-screen to drive Standards, that wouldn't make sense.

It is just a bit annoying that you can only have 100 favorites and they count for on- and offline. Had to take out some Premiums so I could fill in more Standards for split-screen.

That way we could actually compare and see how bad the cars are. 👍

There's a Standard car thread in the photomode section guys, if you want to post and discuss pictures please do it there.

Isn't that for good looking pictures of standard cars though? To post the worst of the worst would be considered trolling...

Well considering this topic has very little to do with photomode I think the discussion would be more inappropriate there. The discussion is about the car models in GT5, not taking pictures of cars. Agree?

I don't mind the standard cars too much, but I don't really understand why some of them look so bad. They stated that the standard models would be "beautifully recreated through the latest technology and the Playstation 3’s cutting-edge graphics.", when they actually were ported straight from GT4.

Are they seriously trying to tell me that in six years, they didn't have the time to polish the textures on the cars which look really bad just a little bit? I don't expect all standards to be premium, but this should have been possible.

The Cien looks so bad I cant even take myself to use it. I cant gt past its view in my garage. so low quality.

I understand you dont want to turn this into a photo thread but how are you going to discuss they way something looks without examples?

Just because a topic has photos in it doesn't necessarily mean its a photo thread. If we made topic about rims and showed examples, does that mean it belongs in the photo mode forum??

Of course, but how about posting a link to a thread with hundreds of perfectly fitting pictures? ;) This isn't the first non-photo Standard car thread anyway.

The Veyron looks like crap as well. Totally inexcusable. I never thought the thing looked good in real life, but this is ridiculous.

Hm, I don`t think the standards are that bad at all. Most of them look pretty good, PD just needs to re-do some textures (especially on race cars!) and change the window colors. Also, they should give them "premium" wheels (look at the FGT. Its incredible how bad and strange the wheel looks). Changing rims on Supras/Civics etc. is essential...

Oh, and they should gave a hood cam to all standards, some of them have a roof cam.

But I have lost all my faith in PD, I predict that the first GT game on PS4 will contain "300" standard cars (GT5 premium imports), 100 premium cars (new cars) and lets say 700 classic cars (untouched GT2/3/4 imports)...

Hi all. Most of the cars in this game are downright rediculously beautiful. However I bought a lamborghini diablo JGTC car from the online dealership and wow it's low res! Some of the sponsors are barely a splodge. I mean lower than ps1! Is it just this car or are there others with such little care? Yes there are a lot of other cars to drive but including this car defies the whole point of the game delay.

I must say that the visual aspect is one of the many disappointments of GT5. There are enormous differences between the visual quality of cars. I sometimes have the impression that some PD developers are better than others. The problem concerns as well standard as premium cars. Most of the time I do time trials on my own tracks. On the replays you can see the enormous differences in the quality of the realization of the cars. And while chasing the ghosts, you sometimes have the impression that you are chasing a collection of pixels. Most embarrassing is the fact that for many cars, even premium, what should be round is not round (like the wheel-opening in the body of the car, or tires), you can see in replays that it is a collection of a serious of short straight lines.

But: most important for me is that you have great feelings while driving and that you car create magnificent tracks with the track editors. So I don't mind although I must admit that many parts of the game (visual aspect, game content, absence of arcade settings like in GT4 or GT5P) are disappointing.

If you look at the OP it says "new member" I'm sure it wasn't deliberate that he posted a topic that has been discussed before and considering that the majority of new threads posted are about things, that if you look hard enough you'll find hidden somewhere on the forums, I don't see why this thread is a problem.

Awesome, I was really hoping for another thread complaining about standard cars. Now I can sleep peacefully tonight.

And now the rest of us can sleep well knowing that the GT Fanboy Defense League has rushed in to sweep the shameful bits under the rug and pretend they're not there.

Pretty sure I have that thing but never actually drove it. Boy, that thing sure does look pretty pathetic. Had I not known better, I might have guessed that to be from some Wii shovelware, like... Wii Race or something to that effect.

They look passable... from a distance. If you view them up close, they are obviously sub-standard, and don't measure up to other racing games from PS3/360; at least not the major releases, as I guess some bargain-bin release might look like that. As I've often pointed out, had FM3 had cars that looked like the Standard models, a year ago the GT Fanboy Defense League would be all over FM3, ceaselessly criticizing its car models. Now that crude models account for roughly 80% of GT5, these models are dismissed as perfectly fine.

Looks more like an anti-aliasing problem than one of textures, although I don't know how you could adjust anti-aliasing on a PS3...

I never said it's a "problem" just tried to point in the right direction.

I would say that Kaz has been busy for the past 6 years doing what he loves, and thats racing.. Video Games are his income at this point.. He is living his passion.

Thus the lack of quality and perfectionism in this game.
I dont see his passion for Gran Turismo returning.

Seems like Gran Turismo is his cash cow now to continue doing what he loves.

Isn't this a little bit simplistic?
I admit GT5 is not perfect and that many points disappoint me, but I know (by experience) programming is rather complex.

Perhaps the problem is that the PS3 is such complex to program, that it was not possible to implement everything perfectly for the deadlines. So, they probably had the choice: 1) retard the game, which economically wouldn't have been possible; 2) put very little content (only premium cars), about 200, fact for which GT3 had been criticised; 3) what they did: give us a mixture of good and less good modelizations to begin with.

And by the way, I don't think Kaz was racing al the time, but when he did, he took advantage of the occasion to make some advertizing for GT5, which is normal.
And: could'nt it be seen as a positive point that the man behind the best selling race series, tries to acquire some real racing experience? which he can use in further developing the game.

I often read on several forums post from people who think FM3 is such better. Two remarks:

1) with the standard XBOX360 forceback steering wheel, you really don't feel the cars. Driving in GT5 with the DFGT feels much better
2) some cars in FM3 are also visually unconvincing, like f.e. the 1950's Porsche, which looks more like a comic-book car than as a real car.

With the Suzuki (that makes up slightly less than 0.1% of the cars in GT5 but is always used as an indication that every single Standard sucks) aside, you have to look pretty damn close. Can you honestly say that during a race you can tell if a car you just passed was a Premium or a Standard without knowing it in advance? I'm currently doing the Tsukuba 9h endurance and there are both Mine's GT-R versions participating. The main difference in the looks is that one of them is white and the other one is black. There's also the Amuse S2000 GT1 which takes a very close look to differentiate it from its Premium quality Turbo brother. And the HPA Golf which is often said to look horrible but it looks just like the others while you're trying to drive your own race instead of searching for squished pixels in the rear door handles. And I'm playing through a Full HD Sony to begin with.

It's funny how you group all those who concentrate on the actual driving into the GT Fanboy Defense League while being steadily in the Anti-GT Attack League yourself. Apparently all is good as long as flaws are found and as soon as someone actually uses ther brain and realizes the Standards aren't half as bad as the haters say that someone immediately gets marked as a fanboy. Interesting how it never works the other way... tells a lot about the people in the different camps.

Erm, you do realise that is because no 3D hardware can draw curves? GPUs work with vectors. You'll never see a real curve on any current generation of 3D hardware for real-time rendering.

"It takes so many lines because representing a curved line takes many short straight lines, and a curved surface requires even more flat surfaces to approximate. A cube can be created with 12 vertices (edges); representing a sphere with straight lines takes having so many little lines that your eyes see a curved surface.

The wires are straight because computers can work with straight lines far more easily than curves, which makes sense: the math for drawing a curve by hand is similarly more complicated than what it takes for a straight line. A straight line, which can be represented as a vector, can also be represented with a simple linear equation, like y=2x, 2< x <5.

A curve needs you to square or take a root of something, like y=x^2, 2<x<5, and you have to do it at so many points a long the line to that you essentially are calculating a whole bunch of straight lines. And the work our brains do to smooth out the curve as we draw point to point involves tremendous complexity if you try to express it mathematically (curve-linear approximation is university, not high school, math).

Of course, a straight line only needs two points. A computer can churn out enough straight lines to make your eye see a curve much faster than it can actually churn out the curve." - How Graphic Cards Work

Maybe you're right.... but even so, you can't really criticise someone for living his passion. Surely, given the opportunity to, we'd all do exactly the same?
