Since its nearly out in the European nations. And is out or nearly out in the USA.

Well I start it of with who has it already on pre-order, or who has it now guys. My pre-order has been sent out, hopfully i get it a day early before it is out in the UK on Tuesday.

I actually just picked it up. :)

I haven't installed it yet, too busy playing Age of Empires 3. I'll update this post with screenshots and my opinion in a few hours.

P4 2.4b / 1gb ddr333 / X800Pro

My system is a little on the old side, but I'm playing with medium/high settings/2x FSAA and getting an average of 40fps.

I can't tell you much about the game, I just started playing it 15 minutes ago. The beginning sequence is different than the demo but you have the same objective. (find the crazy dude) Graphics are really solid, the lighting is amazing (second picture) there was some stuttering when I played the demo and that's gone now. The creepy factor is awesome, I love it. :)

Here are a couple screenshots from the beginning of the second level (originals were over 2mb, had to squish them) -

Picked up a crazy ass gun tonight, this thing fires metal spikes! If the person/thing is close to a wall, you can pin them up with it!!

Kick arse 👍 Loved doing that in HL2, but it was never quite satisfying enough there, looks bloody painfull this time around!

If i get my new components soon then i'll be getting this, but if not then i won't. It's just no fun playing the demo on my rig.

Still waiting for my copy no postman has brought it around, not even my dad who is also a postman has not brought it home. If it comes Wednesday then i got to rush home from work to collect it.

I so want my copy now, i,m even thinking of going up the shop and buying it, while sending back the copy i ordered online.

I think i can wait till Wednesday when it hopfully come through the mail. And if i have to pick it up from one of the royalmail places to collect things i missed to collect.

I do not mind walking up there, as long as i get it before Thursday mates.

First i've heard about this game. I might download the demo tonight.
wow.. really?

Pictures do not come close to expressing how good this game looks, or how creepy it feels. Definitely check it out

I'm working quite late. No where near leaving the office yet. I hope i get a fast download tonight or i'll have to wait for tomorrow, which is when my g/f is coming for dinner so i'll have to wait for Thursday!

I downloaded the demo but it runs like a dog. I even put all things down to minimum and the graphics now look worse than the original doom. But it still lags and jerks. When I exited the game it turned out Media Player was trying to open, but that shouldn't have caused too much of a problem.

My PC:

AMD Athlon64 3200+
512mb RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb

Weird.

Get 1GB if you plan on buying the full game, also upgrade to like a 6800GT because you can get them dirt cheap. But how on earth does it look bad on low like Doom, its much better graphics then Doom 1 even on low mate.

My specs are pretty similar (2600, 1gb, same card) and although the game didn't run great, it wasn't bad. I assume that WMP was causing some chaos, but as you say it shouldn't really be caning your pc that much.

The game is pretty intensive and yeah maybe the extra 512 Mb of RAM wouldn't hurt. Most games these days will benifit greatly from extra RAM. BF2 and this both recommend 2 Gb for the ultimate :scared:

And yes i believe too that our cards are getting a little dated for today's gaming. I've had my 9800 Pro since last Christmas and it was v. popular back then, but i think it's had its day now. TVR's got my number, i think a 6800GT will be part of my upgrade 👍 Well ideally a 7800, but whoa nelly they're pricey.

BF2 runs beautifully on my machine. And really, on minimum, i couldnt believe how bad it looked. I'll try and take a screenshot. Each pixel was 5mm wide!! :yuck:

Now that sounds un true what res did you put it at. Also it has arrived now w00t so don't expect to see me much today mates.

And get this they sent me the directors edition in the default F.E.A.R case, for the price of none collectors edition w00t.

Sapphire ATI Radeon X700 Pro 256MB

Is this a good card for £100?
For F.E.A.R, I doubt it.

This game will probably give my X850XT a run for its money. Hurry up X1800XT (and money to buy one)! :indiff:

But it's better than my current card right?

I miss the good old days when, if a graphics card had more ram, it was better.

Now i can't tell what's good and what's not.

Dunc, i always thought that getting a card with more RAM was better, and i'm hell bent on getting a 256 card now, but apparently you might find that 128 is still ok (? sounds weird, but people are claiming that some 128 cards are better than any other card in the price range)

E.g. for around £100 apparently the best card you can get is the nVidia (i know..) 6800LE. It's 128 Mb, but it works very and if you have some knowledge (i.e. google) you can mod it to run much faster.6800 cards.

The X700 card you mentioned sounds nice though. I love Saphire cards (my 9800 is a Saphire. It overclocked to a stable 450 MHz on aftermarket cooling, an increase of 50 MHz 👍 ). So.

Sounds like each card can be overclocked, take your pick. I can't guarentee either is good of course, but i'm sure both are better than your 9800.

Personally i'd take the X700 as the appeal on 256 Mb is still strong in me. And i love Saphire cards. More X700 cards.

Oh, much better. Any of the X-series cards are much better than the 9000-series. Even an X300 will piss on a 9800XT. Don't get me wrong, the X700 is still a good card (and will run games like UT2004 fine), but don't expect to be running F.E.A.R in high detail with it...

Welcome to the new days when, if a graphics card costs more, it is better. :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't increased RAM just allow for higher quality textures?

After all, textures are simply bitmaps overlayed on a 3D surface. And when you increase the dimensions, resolution, detail and colours in a bitmap, the filesize grows accordingly. In fact, Doom3 requires a 512MB card to run in the highest quality setting because the textures are just that huge.

If thats the case, I don't see how less ram is actually any better.

No corrections needed, i'm sure you're right, although i didn't say less ram was better, i said "apparently you might find that 128 is still ok" ;) As i stated, i'd rather have a 256 Mb card.

Didn't realise that 512 Mb cards actually had a purpose in this world, but then i guess Doom 3 is the benchmark for graphics testing. Would love to play that game on highest.

I just picked up Quake 4.. I guess we will see what an old X800Pro will do.

On the topic of RAM - You absolutely need 1gb at the very least. It makes a world of difference.

Wow tryed to complete F.E.A.R in quick time, next time i play it in single player i go more slowey. But the ending wow it looks like the ending has set up something good.

For like a F.E.A.R 2.

 I was like, "Doom 4" !!112

How is Quake 4?

I know, I didn't get to bed until 3:30 this morning. Still kind of asleep.

Sorry for going off topic man.. Quake 4 is insane. It's really fast paced, loud weapons, bombs going off around you, crazy looking bad guys, lots of cool **** happening in the backround, and that's just singleplayer. So far I love it.

And my X800Pro is taking it like a champ. :)
