Give me your opinions on what makes a fast computer? Is it the Motherboard, CPU, Memory, or Input/Output Devices?

a fast computer??

er.. one that doesent crash all the time ;)

spose it would be the proccesor tht makes the difference more than anything..

Computers have bottle necks all over the place! Ram, Mobo, FSB, Vram, ect... The processor is the core of the system, but if there's a bottleneck somewhere else, alot of good that 3ghz machine will do you. A good combination of fast componets all the way around and good cooling is the optimum configuration.

That's my take on it anyways.

Freeing up HDD space, defragging your computer and cleaning out your registry helps.

Yeah it does but what if the computer user doesn't use a Microsoft Operating System. The main bottleneck in most of todays computer system is the IDE Harddrives. If a computer user wants a performance increase he/she would spend the money for an Ultra 320 SCSI Controller w/ 2 Seagate Cheetah 15k rpm Harddrives striped. It's not really cost effective the average price of a Ultra 320 Controller is about $250.00, and Seagate Cheetah Harddrives will set the user back $300.00 each. It gives a user about a 30% increase of performance over IDE.

The main bottle neck of a PC is the Front Side Bus, because all data needs to pass through it. The more data that can get through it, the faster the CPU can send it to the devices and memory.

That's why P4 systems are slightly faster than Athlon systems even though they are about the same speed. P4 FSB is 533 MHz and Athlons are 333 MHz (166 MHz x 2).

The frontside bus is still faster than any I/O Device i.e Hardrives, Videocards, NICs If you really want to go faster build a 1000 node Beowulf Cluster.
