Fat PS3 Issues

I would be careful. Newer system-intensive games like TLOU can be killer for a fat PS3. Mine died after playing through TLOU and booting up GT5 after 6 or so years. I just bought a Super Slim so I'm glad to be back to PlayStation after Xbox for the past few months. Back on point, your system is likely to die from newer games so watch out.

yeah i recommend getting a slim or super slim at this point in time. my cousin's fat ps3 simply fused and died when we were playing wipeout on it. the fat ones are likely to crash a lot, it's a known error.i suggest you get either a slim or super slim.

I have a fat and it ran GT5/GT Academy and GTA 5 well. Although with GTA I have the disc so it's not pulling everything off of hard drive.

Edit: I have a 3rd Gen fat, with a 250 gb HD, Have mine standing vertical (Which is probably helping a lot on the "heating") Don't run it every day since I have other things. So it just all depends on what you actually do with your system. Some have YLOD after a game and others have no problems.

Either of you have any evidence for these claims? I have a CECHA 60GB launch-day fatty still running as strong as the day I got it. Only thing I've ever done is upgrade the hard drive to a 1TB. No YLOD, it's never crashed on me, never had any problems running any games, including the GT6 demo.

Unless you have some facts to back up these claims, I'd suggest not spreading the idea that anyone with a fatty needs to go out and blow their money on a new PS3.

I've been using a gamestop-refurbished 60 GB PS3 for 2 full years now. The only problem I have is overheating, and I fixed that by letting it sit on an 18-inch wide fan. Only games I've played on it were GT5, GTAIV and V, MLB The Show, Madden, NFS The Run(for 3 hours because it was terrible) and have never had a crashing issue.

However, if I get some money for Christmas, I'm most likely getting another PS3 and possibly a SSD.

I'm not saying he HAS to, but he should keep in mind it may die soon, so if he wants his data he's going to have to be willing to pay to get it fixed (if it's repairable) and buy a new PS3 to transfer on to, which is what I did.

I can't give you statistical facts, but I can say when I got TLOU in early July and started playing, it ran LOUD at all times, to the point where I played in hour long increments due to worry. After beating the game a week and a half later I left for a 2 week vacation, and came back and started up GT5. A couple days later it dies after having had nominal use since my return.

EDIT: also it was pretty normal loudness on GT5, so it was the newer demanding game that made it work harder. I expect similar results from GT6, but who knows, we'll see tomorrow.

You couldn't just take the hard drive out and put it in a new PS3?

What if I back all of the data up every couple of weeks or so?

HDDs cannot be taken from one PS3 to another, they are locked to their original system. Backing up is a good idea, you should research it. I never did and was fortunate that my PS3 was repairable, otherwise my data would've been gone forever (besides a couple backed up save files of GT5, which you can put on a USB drive).

Fantastic advice.

PS3 hard drives are encrypted to the motherboard they are used in.

Ah, I see. So, say I backed up my entire 60 gb hard drive, got a new PS3, put a 60 GB SSD into it, and restored original hard drive onto completely new one. That would work?

My fat 80gb PS3 was overheating too. I have owned it since 2010 so I figured it would have years of dust caked into the internal heatsink. Since the warranty is over anyways, I decided to open it myself and clean it all out (not recommended unless you know what you're doing, high risk of damage and electrical shock!). I found not only a lot of dust, but also the heatsink thermal paste/compound to be hard and very thin and unevenly spread. So I cleaned all the gunk out, used new high quality thermal paste from my recent PC build and voila! Huge difference, fan works much quietly and the PS3 never freezes anymore!

The hard drive on my Fat 40GB started to die a year ago and I put a 250GB in. So it's definitely seen a lot of use, but I don't want to replace something that works good. I will be backing up my data on a USB stick on a regular basis.

Mine died while I was yawning but I don't go around telling people yawning can kill your PS3 :banghead:. Old consoles are very likely to die at some point but contrary to internet logic, that doesn't mean the culprit was the last thing running on them.

Same here. My fatty PS3 overheats once a year (shutting itself off) and I take mine right apart, clean it out, and reapply thermal paste before ever turning it on again. Dust on the inside of systems is the biggest cause of system failures: the bigger games just require more from the system causing more heat than other games and the dust lowers the system's heat tolerances. Without the dust there are no problems. Most people do not feel comfortable opening up their systems and or do not realize how much dust actually fills these things up: it does not matter how clean you think you've been around the system and its exterior shell; PS3s are filtering your air clean. XP

I'm worried my PS3 (2nd gen 120gb) might not want to read GT6. It seems like some of the larger games don't seem to work on my PS3. For example, My Ps3 will not read a Metal Gear Solid 4 disc. Tried 3 different used copies of the game and one new one, all with the same results, for whatever reason it just won't read the disc. GTA V also gave me this problem a few times.

Sounds like your laser is having problems reading dual layer games. You could try a cleaning kit, though those tend to not really do much.

I didn't play the new GT Academy demo, but GT5 has worked fine on my original 80 GB - according to it's sticker it was a March 2007 model. The fan went on high a lot, but I kind of anticipated that.

Guys just in case you don't know the reason the FAT PS3s die is because the chips are mounted upside down and gravity pulls them down with time and heat cycles so the console loose contact with the chips and fails.

Run you fat PS3s upside down or at the very least vertically if you want to avoid the YLOD. When I say upside I mean literally on the wobbly side with the big spider man font PlayStation 3 writing to the floor.

My fat ps3's fan also gets really loud when playing certain games. It was also shipped from the Uk to Japan in less than ideal packaging, but it still works fine. I agree that heat can have an adverse effect on the machines, but I don't think it's the only factor at play. It gets very hot and humid here during the summer, but I haven't had any problems so far.

GTA 5 is so awesome, it killed my 60GB....
Running anything which requires "accelerated" graphics, it just hangs after 20 minutes of playtime.

But anyway, 8 years lifetime isn't bad for a console

Got a super slim so I can still play the 2 games I bought my PS3 for..
