Fat PS3 Issues

The system doing a hard shut down like that means that there is some fault with the system that this game merely aggravated. It's usually related to heat.

No he is correct, it's this game. I had the same issue with the GT Academy demo. I could play any other game in the world without any issues except this.. even GTA 5 runs flawlessly.. but something is wrong in this game. Odd.

Aye point taken. Differs from PS3 to PS3, sadly for me it was a a glitch too far and buying a new one saves the constant problems, if not a dent in my bank balance....

Yeah this was my approach, buy a new one now and save the extra aggro

Mine's been upgraded and fixed (2 times actually, first was graphics chip solder, 2nd I have no clue, it died while playing GT5, was shooting a replay and it skipped a little, froze and died, could it of been the Blu Ray laser?) But do i have to worry about GT6 killing it?

GTA V runs fine, the only time the fan really kicks on heavy is with smoke, Usually just heavy smoke like the crate drop flares.

Just really worried about this is all with leaving in about 2 weeks for vacation, and my work PS3 Slim probably near the verge of dying after a whole summer's worth of playing slideshows in the heat and dust.

Whole Day of GT6 and day one console is still living. Seems to be ps3 related not PD. People can blame companies but manufacturer don't design devices to out live the users.
Its is turning everything on the ps3 up to 11 but still runs smooth, even with drift smoke (which is much improved)

As mentioned above, i do get the jitter with GTA5 around flare smoke but only if on whole screen.

Looks like PS3 is gone.
Have some thermal paste on hand so I'll try to replace the old crusty stuff.

I have a stock 80 gb fat ps3 and i just did the clio tutorial with it no issues so far... i keep the door of my tv unit open because otherwise, it would over heat all the time

As i posted the other day in this thread, i was worried about my 120 gb slim not reading my copy of GT6.. Well that's exactly what happen. Got off work, picked up GT6, got home, popped it in...Nothing. Shot compressed air through the system, nothing. Pop in GT5, works. Pop in GTA: V works.

I was furious at this point. Quick restored the system, packed it up and went right back up to game stop and traded it in on the new one.. So all in all, GT6 ended up costing me $261... Dedication.

Fat launch month 60gb model here and it hasn't missed a beat in hours of continuos play today.
Another day of flawless performance from my launch month fat 60gb PS3.

My daughter even swiped it clean onto my living room's solid oak floor today, from the top of the TV cabinet. Still fine.

I got the game yesterday and did the tutorial and bought the car and then tried to get the gifted AMG Vision GT and I got the flashing red light. I guess there isn't much point getting the wheel out if it's likely to crash again at some point. :(

Proabably as many people reported their FAT's going down while playing GTA5 as there are complaining about GT6.

They (PS3 FAT)are at the end of the line people. It's coïncedence that it happens to you while playing GT6.

Are the old fat ps3's easy to open up and clean?

I have an ex 80gb fatty, upgraded with a crucial m225 ssd... Kinda concerned after reading these reports. To be fair, it's never given me any gyp though...

Also, are they easy to backup the hdd to an extremal disc in case it does die?

I just cannot beleive what treatment your consoles just have, so that you guys report crashing and units dying. Is the blasted thing on 24/7?

Mine has been on and Off because it will eventually overheat, because of it's place in the Multimedia unit. When in use I have to keep the door or the unit fully open and my console is just fine.

Do not take it bad. I do not want to flame, but there MUST be something you guys do with your fat consoles that makes it crash and burn. Something that I do not do with my fat 80 GB whose been able to run game flawlessly even where you guys reported crashes ( kart races, some other places, menus).

You oughta check that out.

They were at the end of the line 3+ years ago. All of our launch models should not have lasted this long.
I got my new red PS3 and the next day I managed to fix my 60gb fatty with the hair dryer trick.

Mine would YLOD within 30-45minutes of turning on at first. Then it would die within 5 just idling.

My 160 gb fatty seems fine after 5 hours non stop, not a singe glitch. Probably just dust accumulation issues on older units and the game may cause it to run warmer than usual. My laptop get hotter with certain games while others not so much.

The rolling start at Brands Hatch is in no way flawless, it's slow and some weird shadows appear, not sure if related to the FAT PS3 or not.

Had my PS3 60GB from launch day. Had a blu-ray assembly changed and a larger HHD. Not bad for nearly 7 years.

The 2 main problems with them switching off and turning back on are a faulty fan (keeps the thermal protection switch engaged) and that Sony were tight with the the thermal paste.

I pre-empted mine by taking it apart and repasting the CPU, GPU and several other IC's with good quality paste. I also strip it and clean it every 12 months. I can play Dust 514 all day with no problems (most intensive game I have) and it's quieter than my nephews Slim's.

If you want to further reduce heat, swap the HDD for a solid state drive. There are no moving parts and they draw less current. It also speeds your console up too!

I have a reverse compatible 80gig fat PS3 from launch year. It has died once before, (YLOD), and I have resurrected it. I had the GPU resoldered by a local shop, better thermal paste applied, and I swapped out for a better fan so that it would run cooler. My system has a noticeable whir to it now, and I also make sure the window is cracked nearby so that its area is cool. I also cover the system when I'm done so that it can't collect extra dust.

I do recommend people with the fat PS3s, with a few hours on hand, to physically take it apart and clean the fan at least twice a year as the stock fan collects dust like nobody's business causing overheating and the GPU to break a solder joint (YLOD). You can tell, if the air being released from the back of the system is hot, that it needs be cleaned out. I used to do it, and the one year I didn't is the year it died. Now I make sure it is always clean and cool. Over 7 years old and still kicking!

Also after reading through the list on both it appears to be 1st gen fat that has been having issues.

With GTA and having issues are mostly when the game is all on the HD than HD/Disc.

Since I have 3rd gen fat and I managed to play to IA, unlike some people I don't play hours and hours every day.

Is there a good guide with photos to this process?

I am comfortable working on a PC, but i've never taken a PS3 apart. I have an 80gb fatty with an upgraded 64gb SSD.

I have a fat 80gb PS3 with a 60gb SSD and it works great and loads everything in GT6 blindingly fast, even races only take a couple of seconds to load.

Nice! I have a 40gb ps3 so I'm interested in buying such a thing. What brand do you have and is it internal or external? :)

It's internal. Any newish SSD will do, Intel, toshiba, crucial etc. it's importan to know, you aren't going to get blazing fast speeds as you would in a mordern PC. They are faster than conventional drives in the PS3, but not PC fast.

The PS3 is SATA 1 (1.5GB/s), SSD's are designed at SATA 2 minimum (3GB/s), and mainly SATA 3 (6GB/s). They are all SATA 1 backwards compatible though.

Just keep that in mind and your good!

I used an old Crucial M225 in mine, only because I bought a new one for my PC. Sped up loading times and accessing the garage :). That was GT5 though, not got my hands on GT6 yet :(

Well I'm up to four crashes now, takes the fun out of it with it keep crashing. It has crashed trying to view the car list in the garage, two times trying to accept a car and once after a race.
