Favorite Piece of Art

I like Escher's work. Also, some of the Australian landscape painters are awesome.

I've always liked Robert Bateman for current artists, and I love Greek sculpture from the classic period (archaic is tough on the eyes to me.) I live relatively close to the Met. in NYC and frequent it a few times a year.
I also like some renaissance, especially Michaelangelo.

I don't have a favorite single piece of art, though I'm a big fan of Edward Hopper, too. He had a way with light. I also like Andrew Wyeth, his father N. C. Wyeth, and NC's pal Howard Pyle. I have to admit that I prefer less abstract art. I do like some, but in general I prefer pictures you can understand as pictures.

On the abstract side, I really enjoy the work of Scottish sculptor/photographer Andrew Goldsworthy. He uses no tools except a camera, and only natural objects and materials. He assembles his sculptures, photgraphs them, and then lets them fade away in a few minutes, hours, or days. Here are some examples:

I always liked Raphael's 'School of Athens,' but I like all sorts of art.

I also really like Rodin's sculpture/doorway 'The Gates of Hell' simply because I think it would be badass to have a replica made for the doorway to my basement.
