However, I will reserve judgement on this movie, I heard it goes beyond the racing and into the personal life of James Hunt, featuring Olivia Wilde as the wife he supposedly "sold" off to Richard Burton, this being played by Russell Crowe. If true, it means we're not talking about a proper motorsports movie.

That would be a stylistic choice by Peter Morgan, the screenwriter. In an interview with Top Gear Magazine on the film, he said he approached Bernie Ecclestone, who told him "I hope you aren't going to make a movie about Formula 1". Morgan replied that the film is only about Formula 1 insofar as it is a framing device for the narrative, which satisfied Bernie. This is not a film about Formula 1, but rather about the battle between Hunt and Lauda, and how two very different men approached the same goal - the World Championship - with two very different philosophies. Think of it as one part Rocky, and one part Frost/Nixon.
