Rick White’s LS1 Prius Project – Yep, we are putting an LS1 in a Prius and of course converting it to rear wheel drive. 4L60E automatic transmission. He wants to keep it stock appearing down to the factory wheels. Rick hauled this car all the way down to us from Boston for the conversion.

Talk about the ultimate sleeper

Hell yes! I want it (kinda...)! Though, the 4L60E isn't the greatest transmission they could have put behind it.

Probably, but they wanted it to look stock. Having a big motor and RWD in a car with barely any room would be much more difficult.

Nope. If everyone thinks it's a green hybrid, I don't want it. To me, Priuses aren't that terrible by themselves- it's the facts that they are seen as green (going against the car-loving culture) and driven extremely slowly that make them terrible cars.

I don't understand why the Prius gets so much hate. Not every car has to be a gas guzzling sports car.

As somebody who lives in Prius haven, the drivers are the reason. Hybrids have existed for a while, Prius drivers are a new breed of snob.
This. They are really bad.

SVX
Must be a US thing. Don't get that sort of thing here.

Many people who simply have no concept of road etiquette drive Priuses. It adds to the frustration of somebody driving exactly the speed limit in the fast lane when it's a Prius.

The Prius is very much a lifestyle symbol. It is commonly used to show off political leanings and what causes the driver supports. The car itself and the many bumper stickers can be used to declare the owner's support for Obama, Religious Coexistence, Greenpeace, Rastafarianism, and Unions.

Personally I have received unsolicited lectures by Prius drivers about global warning and shaming me for driving an old American V8 car. It's just what they're known for.

It's a shame because the Prius is actually a good economy car.

Chevy engines don't just die unless you beat on them for hours and hours and hours continuously (not sure about the LS, but the small-block was like that).

So, you're not a fan of Tesla or these new hybrid sports cars? Because they're being green as well & how they're driven will depend on the owners.

I've never hear of the small block failing because of this. Not once. Ever.

This. It's why I said the 2nd-gen Prius deserved deserved to go in Hell when it polled on the Cool Wall. Green cars and "green" itself are crushingly uncool, at least from an enthusiast's POV, but the 2nd-gen Prius is the worst of the worst. At some point in the mid-2000s, at the height of the Hummer-defined bubble-economy conspicuous consumption, the Prius became the car of choice for the uppity, fashionable upper-middle-class left. Priuses are driven by the kind of people whose response to any problem is another government benefit, subsidy, entitlement, or regulation, and who shout about social justice all the time. And a small group of conservatives who think we can win the War on Terror by driving slow, certifed-fun-free hyrbids.

@Slashfan 24 Hours of LeMons. The SBC will outlast the car it's installed in if you're drag racing or just driving it on the street, but after several hours of hard running it begins to suffer cooling and oiling problems, plus starter heat soak.

If that was the case NASCAR wouldn't have used it for 35 years. It comes down to the quality of the components you use. Any idiot can build a small block Chevy but it doesn't mean it will last as long as the guy's next to yours despite being "the same engine". And lets face it, factory parts on that engine blow. I fin it funny you bring that up considering how successful pushrod engines have been in Le Mans, namely the 289 and 427 Fords which are setup almost identically to that of an SBC.

Why did they have to choose a V8?

There is no room in the cabin now.

Keeping it an FF but giving it a 1.6 Turbo would make it the ultimate sleeper.

Plus it is going no where without an accelerator.

Because V8's are associated with gas guzzling. I don't think the goal of this swap was just to be a sleeper, it was to bastardize a Prius.

Actually most Prius owners are just people looking for a car that has good fuel economy. Saying they're all whining, liberal, d-bags that are out to ruin cars, is like saying all Mustang owners are rednecks that have an insane love of guns and a crush on their sister.

Putting a V8 in a Prius is stupid though, it's a lot of work for something that probably isn't that great to drive. There are better choices if you wanted to build something fast.

Good point.

It made it exceptionally cooler.

I agree because of this quote...

"He wants to keep it stock appearing down to the factory wheels."

Installing an LT1 V8 into a tiny car, converted to RWD, with tiny stock wheels and tires is a terrible idea. The only thing that car will be good for is burnout contests and maybe drifting. With stock tires and suspension that car will be worthless the way its being built. You could not drag race or road track that car the way it is. You would barely be able to drive it on the street. Stock Prius tires are what maybe 5 inches wide if even that? The LT1 would be putting out more than 4x the amount of hp than those tires can handle.

Now if they were building this Prius into some sort of Pro Touring or road track machine THEN it would be pretty cool. Anyone can just drop a V8 into a car, convert it to RWD, and leave the rest stock. Lets hope they truly do something more with this car. Otherwise its just a poor build IMO. At that point they could just modify a Prius body and put it onto a Camaro or Firebird frame. Would be a lot less work and a heck of a lot more functional. A stretched out, wide body Prius might actually look decent onto something like a 1998 Camaro or Firebird drivetrain.
