Finally - a SILVER on the Nurburgring Nordschleife

I know it's not much to brag about given the high level of drivers on this forum. But I was FINALLY able to silver the Nurburgring Nordschleife :). Since we bought our first PS3 just this past Christmas and I've only been driving in GT5 with a wheel about the same time, and I'm 60+, I figure that's not too bad. I'm sure that's nothing for all the young guns out there !!!

I started with lesser powered cars to get used to the track, worked on the AMG school for a couple of evenings, then went after it last night in a Corvette C6 ZR1, race prepped, detuned to 650 PP.

It wasn't the prettiest lap ever made and I definitely had luck on my side in a few corners - but I'll take it. And there's no way I was ever going to catch that Zonda :grumpy: He was about 25 seconds ahead of me. I'm gradually working up my skill level to try the weekly time trial events.

Regardless the results, it sure is fun !!!!
 
I'm 46 and (not sure if you consider that older) running laps just about every day. level 39 A spec 40 B spec.
 
hmmm i am only 32 and i don't come accross that many older people then me ingame , but that is besides the point , don't reflect on other how you're skill or style is . Most important is that you enjoy the game and that every accomplishment you achieve was fun .
You don't need to be the best in the world to enjoy you'reself wether it be in a game or on the track in real life .

Just be open to learn and experience new stuff , i would suggest you check out stuff like this to Japanese car shootout as a testdriver , loads of fun , you get to know more people and learn something about tuning cars ingame and well have a good time :D
 
I'm pretty sure you can manage gold too, just keep driving. :)

I always thought the average Gran Turismo Player was older than most.
It requires much more patience than other games.
Most of the guys on my friends list are mid to late 20's to 30's and a few in their 40's. Only a few in their teens, as they mostly go around Top Gear Test Track on Racing Softs smashing into the barriers 'Drag Racing'. One exception(that I know of) being doodlemonopoly who is crazy fast in mid-teens

I almost got silver using my Nissan R89C Race Car 89 however when I realized I was going to win silver I got excited and crashed at last corner and blew it! I havent placed better than 4th. I will keep trying, that track is difficult!!!!!

That race sure is tricky.
The Norschleife is not the easiest place to overtake (wheel on the grass much?).

Do you have a good tune for you 'Vette.
A good "pushy" tune is the way to go on this track.

Practice makes perfect and maybe you'll catch that darn Zonda or McLaren in the near future.
 
I have probably done at least 200-300 laps on the Nurburgring over the time that I have had GT5, about 50% of that with a wheel which I am currently using. I love the 'Ring, one of my favourite tracks, however races always kick my ass on this track.

The fact that it was 650pp limit didnt really help as I find those races the hardest out of the A-spec seasonals without fail. After some help on this forum I eventually got gold with a 6:28 in the Nissan R-35 TC.

This race was HARD (I am not a great driver, about 10-15,000th in the TTs) and I'm glad I finally beat it. I had to try about 30 times, as well as a number of reloads to change up the opposition.

With time, I will improve! (and so will you :) )

I don't get why people think this is 'too' hard. Not to brag that i'm the greatest driver of all, but i didn't find it hard at all. I've even beat it with my M3 gtr. Tho that took me a few hours to do.

Still wondering why people push themselves too far with cars that just cant beat the race. I mean a ZR1 is great and all but i fear it wont do its justice on that race. But i hope to be proven wrong. Just saying that if you cant win it, just use a different car. Even an easy car like the 2J.

Interesting that you bring that up Vegard :) There were several (many ??!!) places where I had at least two wheels on the grasss and still managed to hang on. Don't know why I didn't spin out. That Corvette just seemed to stick like glue.

I try to keep it on the pavement/rumble strips - but it's real easy to drop off the edge. It's going to be an interesting challenge to run clean sectors to qualify for the weekly time trials. Still need lots of practice with that big Mercedes ;)

If you keep trying the race, you'll eventually get an easier configuration. On my first attempt, using the Camaro SS '10 RM, the Ford Falcon started in front with the Lister Storm in 2nd... kinda took away any sense of accomplishment though, lol. I still haven't beaten this one on race/hard tires when the BMW Mclaren starts in front.
 
Congrats on the result.
Some cars will prove easier to control than others due to the uneven nature of the course.
Try cars built to race on the ring like n24 schulze sports. Max it out in power and put on race soft. It may be the silver bullet u need. Personally I find 2J too much to handle. Ruthlessly fast but difficult to get a clean lap as it flies around. A taller suspension is more to my liking on the ring and I do not know how to tune.
 
same age as a '57 Chevy here. The kids got bored of the game quick, I find it rather compelling. Use a controller. Using the exit and reenter technique 4 or 5 times gets you the Corvette C5 and Citroen GT up as the lead, the rest are all japan GT500 cars, they can be beaten with a ~ 7:00 time for Gold.

It will depend of the lineup of cars in the race, if the McLaren F1 race car is there you will need a quick car, if the Zonda LM is there you will also need a quick car, but its not as fast as the McLaren, if the Ford GT is the fastest car it will be relatively ''easy''

With a stock Corvette ZR1 using racing soft tires i finished 2nd , 2.9 second behind the McLaren F1, and in front of the Zonda, on another race where the quickest was the Ford GT i won by 8-9 seconds with a total time of 6:31.897, got stuck between 2 group of cars, they seem to brake in your face when you get closer... :grumpy:

Yeah this one varies very wildly based on the competition. You seem to have to know the ring pretty well(or, failing that, have RS tires on a high PP race car) to beat the McLaren, but the other lineups can let you use a lot of different cars or win with different skill levels. With the C5R in front you only need around 6:50 to win, if the Ford Falcon is the top opponent it's over 7 minutes. That's easily achievable with a decent street car at 600PP on Hards(and I'm sure can be done with less).

The toughest thing is getting through the pack, since you only have one lap you have little choice but to take to the dirt frequently, unless your car is way overpowered. Their often complete obliviousness to you being next to them doesn't help either, and of course the slamming on the brakes every time you get near them causes many accidents and emergency evasive maneuvers, which then cause more accidents.

Someday I would love to play online with whichever people are responsible for changing their programming to make them do that, so I can see how much they like it when I drive the way the AI does.

Oh yeah, I'm 35. I think. I stopped keeping track long ago. :)
 
@ Steamcat. The GT games are similar to golf in real life, in that you can keep playing to a ripe old age & as you get older, the handicap system works for you. (In GT5, this could be equated to using better cars than the AI. Online is a different story, though. LOL!)

Nice result there on the 'ring. If you have the Toyota GT1 race car, give that a bash. It's a standard, but it should win quite easily. (Use Praianos' tune.)

Turning 54 soon, but quite competitive. (Currently about 680th in the Indy TT) :)
 
I'm 60 and have won the Nordscheife race a fair few times now. I did the same as the OP and worked the AMG Acadamy and then ran the Challenge 4 650pp race with well under 650pp cars until I'd learnt the track.
I've also won the World Circuit Tour Nurburg 24hr race at 750pp. This is the closed circuit plus the Nordscheife so at least you get to pass a few cars before the narrow twisty, wholly magnificent Nordscheife sections. With 750pp you can be driving a car with around 1000bhp and things can go wrong incredibly fast if you put a wheel wrong or use a fraction too much power exiting a corner! Great fun!
 
Going 62 this year. Been palying this game since GT3 and am now doing the GT5 24hour Nurburgring endurance on Aspec. Raining cats and dogs but currently leading by about 5mins using a Speed8 with Intermediate tires! I will need a few more days as I am just on my 2nd hour.
 
43 here, and great to see that "video games" aren't just "for kids", as is what I am regularly teased with... although in it's defence I view GT5 as more of a sim than a game.
 
I'm 69 and routinely run this Seasonal. I like to race the McLaren GT1 which requires beating a 6:27. I use a GTR TC35 at 650pp, with racing hard tires, and zero aids. My best lap has been a 6:23.xx. My rig is a Playseat, with CSR-E wheel and peddles. I don't think age is a big deal in being competative in this game except when you come to the super fast reflex tests like the Vettle Challenge.

Im 38 and been playing the game since GT-2. Why using such high powered cars for the ring? The track is all about handling on uneven, sloping surfaces. I guess less power but more grip is key, maybe trying AWD cars like the stealth GT-R with racing softs to make it a bit easier might help you

Lovely lap!! I'm running 6'24 on the Stealth GT-R. This race is my new moneymaker...
 
56 years old.....still try to win everything regardless of age
Bicycle races ,autocross, GT5....everything!
Oh ,and I like to practice the Nordscheife with the Redbull car,helps staying sharp

Speaking of relexes, I find my reflexes are getting faster and I'm anticipating more to the cars in front of me. There's been a couple of times that I reacted so quickly that I wondered later "How the hell did I do THAT??!!" Maybe regular doses of GT is good for your health :) Maintains your youth :sly:

I believe the brain is like any organ in the body and responds positively to a work out. There is no question driving the Nordschleife in a high powered auto in GT is a "work out".

I saw a recent scientific study in which a video game (don't remember which) was used in a nursing home with patients. Randomly selected patients were taught to play the game and then played it a certain amount of time per week. They were compared in a mental accuity test to patients who went about their normal routine. When comparing the before and after scores the patients who played the game scored better after several months of playing the game then those who didn't play the game.

My last two words say it. Great fun. Let loose with 1000bhp, a car that will corner fast and one of the most difficult tracks in the world? Because it's there!

Driving the Lupo round there is plain boring now, although when I first ran it I was sweating hard and it took several tries to Gold it.
 
I'm 54 here, using a DFGT, Playseat Evolution on order, and I was having a fit beating this, changed to the Nissan GT-R N24 Schulze Motorsports '11, and with adding 5 kilos, and RM, started running 6:30-6:40. With RS, 6:26 is my best.

Switched over to the Toyota GT-One Race Car, fully ballasted, and de-tuned to 650. With RS, it will run 6:16. The McLaren is toast, if I don't get too foolish or greedy passing.

Been trying other cars, and even running the power down on the GT-R to make it more interesting.

I used to hate the 'Ring, but not now!
