I was thinking about it today, and I think I have finally figured out the one thing that really kills the enjoyment of GT5 for me.
I was thinking about all the things about it that I don't like, such as the half hearted implementation of most of the features (looking at you weather and day/night) and the fact that there's really only about 200 cars in the game with a huge supporting cast of cars that look like they're from a PS2 game. Couple that with the less than spectacular car feel through the controller (I'm not going to spend money on a wheel for a game that should be playable with stock equipment) and the absolutely terrible AI, and you would think that I'd found the cause of my dislike.
But no, none of those things, even put together, really kill the game for me. I can get past cars that look bad, limp controller feedback and spotty implementation of weather and time change. I can even get over the AI being so slow it's laughable. But there is something which I can not overlook.
This game claims to be the Ultimate Driving Simulator. It is sold as a racing game, and fancies itself to be quite the king of the console racing mountain. And yet, it lacks the most definitive name in sports car racing of all time.
Porsche.
Who has the most Le Mans 24 hour victories? Porsche. Who has the most Daytona 24 hour victories? Porsche. Who dominated Can-Am so much that it killed the series? Porsche. Who has the most GT wins in ALMS? Porsche. What manufacturer numerically dominates almost all track day lapping events? Porsche. Who has been a household name in sports car racing for 60 years? Porsche. There truly is no substitute.
Who is NOT in GT5? Porsche.
Even those who profess to be 'Porsche haters' have to admit, there is no other manufacturer that can equal the accomplishments of Porsche. No one has been as good for as long, and no one has a more pedigreed racing heritage than them. Sure, Ferrari has been racing for just as long, and they've dominated F1 for the past decade, but when it comes to sports cars, they've played second fiddle to the men from Stuttgart for half a century.
The lack of this incredible manufacturer in GT5 is a tragedy. What is PD's excuse? Other games have managed to secure licensing to have Porsche in them (Every Forza game, Need for Speed, TDU, PGR, etc.) so why couldn't PD manage? And don't try to say that Ruf counts, because they don't. There's no Ruf race cars, no Ruf premiums, and there's only 4, the newest of which is like 10 years old.
PD developed this game for years. They put untold millions into creating this experience, and they included a staggering variety of cars. How did they manage to miss one so glaringly obvious? The fact that they did, to me, screams that this game is unfinished as much as all the other problems put together. It's a shame, and it kills my desire to play the game knowing that there's such a gaping hole.
Am I alone in this feeling? Does anyone else feel that for a game concerning cars to be the 'Ultimate' anything, it should at least have the ultimate racing manufacturer?
