I would have guessed let a drunk Shem decide.

This is tough, but this has been said: the wheel can wait. New experiences should be taken in, even if you will live there. Trips are a great o experience to learn things. A wheel will be fun as well, but it can wait.

EDIT:I do have a problem. I have been using an old Cingular flip phone that was my dad's because my free one bit the dust a little while ago. I broke the screen, but didn't worry about it since it is from 2002 and my mom, dad, sister and I all now had functioning phones. I then broke the screen by dropping it and continuing to walk, directly onto it. That was a few months ago, and I bought a go phone for $5 from a friend to use instead. Now, my dad's phone is becoming pretty beat up, and he wants to use this phone that has a broken screen that he doesn't know about. I don't know what to do, because he will be extremely ticked when he finds out. Any ideas?

step 1: buy the wheel.

step 2: buy a ferrari or lamborghini.

step 3: select free run on cote.

step 4: turn up the volume

step 5: switch to cockpit view. you now have a vacation without leaving home PLUS a nice car!

^ There's your answer! That cockpit and wheel will have you touring the world in no time!

Let's work this one out.

You could be straight up with your dad about what happened e.g. "The phone has actually been pretty damaged over the last few days/months, I haven't intentionally set out to bust it, it just ended up braking because it's an old phone."

Or you could try to escape the blame by hiding the phone somewhere not too hard to find and then when it's found claim that you've never known about the screen being broken and last time you had it the phone wasn't in such a bad condition.

These are just two of many possibilities. I'd go for honesty because telling the truth is always going to come off better than a lie.

Normally, I would agree with all the "the experience is so much more awesome and you'll have treasured memories and yadeeyadeeya", but I think they might be missing the part that you've already been there, will be living there eventually, and if you went the trip would probably end up pretty average and nothing special. If this is certainly going to be the case, personally I'd go with the wheel. However if the trip has potential to be really memorable, then I'd take the trip. But it seems like from what you're saying that that probably won't happen.

Ergo, wheel.

Shem, I ended up being honest, saying it got a small crack by me dropping it, and that it ended up getting worse from me sitting on it and playing with it. He ended up using another old phone that he fixed anyway, so no problem.

I can't even believe you're debating over taking a week-long vacation or spending that time playing GT.

First of all, GT isn't worth it. If you want a racing game that's worth spending money on, get iRacing.

Secondly, staying inside and playing video games isn't necessarily good for a moody person. Getting outside and enjoying the weather is precisely what's needed to make you feel better about whatever it is you need help with.

The only reason I sit in my room and play games is because I don't have enough money at the moment to take road trips with friends, and I still have to rely on other people to fly me places. If I could afford it, I would have video games as a reserve for those rare times during winter when my buddies and I want to stay inside and eat pizza and drink beer, or for when I get exhausted from traveling through all those time zones.

So this isn't even a decision. Thailand.

Why go tanning in the Thai sun when you can go blackening in the china smog?

Having just got a racing cockpit, I would say, DON'T DO IT!!!

They are a tool of Satan which sucks up all your available free time, and makes you forget to eat, or sleep, or even have a drink

I'm joking of course, we both absolutely love it!:)

Here's my point of view, I'd go to Thailand because it's always cool to see a place you've never been, and it would be a memory you will never forget. It's cool telling people you've been to different places, "Oh yeah, Thailand, it was great I saw lot's of cool things, (INSERT THINGS YOU SAW HERE).

Also if you've got a camera take lot's and lot's of pictures so you can remember how fun/sad/bad/good it was!

Onto the steering wheel; often when I have to have to decide over travel and material goods, I chose travel and while I'm on vacation I keep wishing I had my present .

Also whenever I come back home and vacation is over I still don't have it. So all in all just go with your gut. I'm indifferent.

Your wife's family: "Hey! Welcome back to Thailand, good to see you again! So, where's your husband?"

Your wife: "Oh, he's at home playing Gran Turismo :grumpy:"

Doesn't sound too good, does it? Go to Thailand!

See, I don't travel much. If I were you, I'd get the gaming setup. That way you can have fun playing GT5 and not have to deal with the in-laws.

Some in-laws are probably OK...

Ooh that's close! :O

I saw the racing wheel was losing by two points, so just to be cruel I closed the gap further :D

Although Thailand is certainly no bad place to visit. Certainly should be enough there to keep you busy.

On the subject of wheels though, I wanna get a DFGT now. Just a question of if I end up with one at Christmas. And I can find a suitable 'stand' for it. :indiff:

Mine's on an IKEA coffee table, and my racing seat is a fouton.

It's not the "seeing new things" part. It's the "being-on-a-romantic-vacation-with-your-wife-instead-of-sleeping-alone-at-home-on-your-couch" part that's important here.

This shouldnt even be a question.

Going out and living life, or sitting at home being a basement boy on something which can be bought at any other time. Its obvious, I'd honestly be disappointed in you (and I don't even know you) if you chose a damn gaming peripheral over a holiday.
Just think, some people have never been overseas, its a luxury, go and experience it, even if it is for the second time. I sure as hell will be going back to Japan after being there once, and I know for sure that I would choose a week there over a wheel.

EDIT: And this is coming from a 16 year old..

Good point. I don't want that to happen.

Mine are sweet.

Thanks man, that's a big help. :(

True, most people seem to have missed that bit.

It's not the "seeing new things" part. It's the "being-on-a-romantic-vacation-with-your-wife-instead-of-sleeping-alone-at-home-on-your-couch" part that's important here.

I'm being pushed more and more towards the trip.

This shouldnt even be a question.

But it is. And as much as I'm fond of Thailand, I also really like playing GT!

Next, I think we should discuss which airline you are taking hehe.

Singapore Airlines have the hottest stewardesses...

Regardless of whether you have been there or not, going out and seeing stuff is better than dwelling in your house playing a game which isn't even that great.

Regardless of whether you have seen it all or not, any culture, whether its your everday culture or the half in your blood Thai culture, is better than being in your house experiencing no culture but that of other dwellers with nothing better to do than swear over the internet.

Regardless of how much you want this wheel, think of how much it would mean to your girl if you even acted like you want to be a part of her family, rather than being lonesome without your girl and her family.

The bottom line is, family is and always will be first, games can wait.

Oh good, agreed, I was worried you were going to go with a non-oriental airline, that would be a complete disaster :D

Someone needs to start a Filipino airline in my opinion. (I have not heard of any)

playing a game which isn't even that great.

Well if we're talking about GT5 here, that is a very, very good point.

You know, although I said go with the wheel earlier, I've been thinking this whole time that wouldn't your wife be kinda upset if you effectively ditched her for a week just to get a wheel and play GT and drink beer? I know I would be if I was in her situation.

There have been moments where my family wanted to do something and I really just wanted to stay home, do my own thing, and have time to myself which often involved video games, so I do know where you're coming from, albeit on a lesser scale. At this point I would say if you really need the time to yourself to slow down and unwind, then go with the wheel, but if you just want to stay home for the sake of playing GT, go on the trip.

Will Thailand be there in 10 years? Yes.
Will a driving wheel be available in 10 years? Yes.
But just think about something my mum says; “you can't buy good memories, and memories stay with you forever”.

Legendary
The bottom line is, family is and always will be first, games can wait.

I'd rather play a 72 hour pong marathon against a 4 year old than hang with my family do I don't agree with that

Shem, your missus must be very understanding if this choice is even on the cards.

As we're only talking about your next holiday rather than never going to Thailand in the future, it's all about how you feel about this choice right now. I suggest you do what feels right. If you and those around you involved are happy with either decision, that must make it more comfortable. Crikey, it's not a bad position to be in really. :)

Shem, just remember the saying "happy wife, happy life". In that case, go for the trip to Thailand. If you have enough money left over afterwards, consider getting a Driving Force GT, as it is a great wheel for the price, and rather then spend more on a cockpit, just attach it to a table and just use an office chair or something similarly portable for the seat.

Mine's on an IKEA coffee table, and my racing seat is a fouton.

I've got you beaten in the bad quality racing cockpit department - my wheel's on a cheap chipboard (covered up with wood patterned plastic/vinyl) table which is very unsturdy; I have a hardcover book wedged between it and the wall so it doesn't wobble too much and my seat is an nonadjustable office chair.

 I've been there. Years ago my first wheel was as Lotus wheel which I attached to a really rickety coffee table. The whole thing collapsed and trapped my feet - that put me right off and I used a controller up until last year. I now use a DFGT and wheel stand pro which works just fine with a really comfy recliner chair (which gives a surprisingly realistic position) - especially good for endurance races. :sly: It also folds flat so I can store it away. Worth every penny.

Shem, would the cockpit be in your front room? That would cause a few issues wouldn't it?

My first wheel was for GT2. A good one at the time though I don't remember the brand as I was around 11 or something. My second (GT4) was a Ferrari endorsed wheel that I expected to be ace for 50quid, I bolted that to my coffee table. The thing was less sensitive than me!

Having been thinking about such things outlined in this thread I have considered making the trip and going for a set up like you have; GTDFP & Wheelstand. I already have a very comfortable Ikea chair for gaming, I'm thinking that could match up nicely with the wheel stand and spare me the cost of a full rig. Being easily stored away would also be convenient.

If I go for the trip and then wait a few months until I'm back from my UK trip I can probably pick one up using my new English account (intend to set up), online.
