lol... I think he wants to fly more than he wants to read..

 Yeah, for now I'm just trying to learn the basics, get an idea of what the various controls do, learn how to read the instruments, follow waypoints, etc. There's more than enough stock content for me to achieve that so I'm probably a ways off from any kind of payware or even free mods. Most of what has been said in the last few posts is completely greek to me, so I won't be doing any advanced flying until I can make sense of the nuts and bolts. I know there's a large divide between what you guys take as common knowledge and what I actually know so far, so right now I'm just trying to get the simple stuff figured out (like what AOM and FCOM mean) before moving to the more complicated stuff, and at the same time not trying to pester you guys with every little question I encounter. And I'm totally fine with that, not trying to be the ace pilot right from the get-go as I'd rather get a really firm grasp on the basics first.

No just ask. I'm learning from it too :P

I'm trying to research on my own too. But I often run into conflicting opinions about some things, so I like to be able to ask people in the know what the real/preferred solution is. Another common occurrence is that I'll find things discussing the topic I'm trying to learn about but the conversation is amongst people who already know all the in's and out's and lingo and I can't make sense of what they're saying. So, it's nice to have some friendly folk here who can spell it out in layman's terms for me. But I also don't want to appear that I just expect people here to answer all my questions for me either, or that I'm bombarding them with every little thing.

Swagger has been a generous chap and a great help so far, but I often have to consult google just to understand some of the terms used so it may take me a day or two before I actually understand the advice. I'm still fairly new to the PC sim game and I'm trying to relearn Windows as well as the details of how to edit files or add mods or even just optimizing the OS, all while trying to figure out FSX. It's a bit overwhelming at times because I'm not a tech/computer noob at all but this stuff makes me feel like a total :dunce:. A lot of times people answer questions using terms and lingo that are commonplace to them but are completely foreign to me so it makes it a bit difficult to learn (same thing happens with my racing sims). I'm having fun just flying and landing though, so I'm happy with it all at the moment. I just want to enjoy some flying before I go all out with optimizing and adding stuff but this weekend I'm planning to uninstall it all and start re-doing things based on the advice given here.

AOM= Aircraft Operating Manual (user manual from manufacture)
FCOM= Flight Crew Operating Manual (user manual from airline generally)

Each are generally 500-700 pages and should be read before attempting to fly any new aircraft before you jump to the forums for help (not this forum, but the official forums. If you got questions though, ask me, I'll more than likely know if it's a Boeing product).

IRL these things are actually well over 900-1300 pages... So we're getting a break to be honest.

Please, ask with all desire. I visit my payware forums hourly to give non-moderator help to people for troubleshooting... The more I get asked stuff, the more I know... And that makes me feel good helping others.

Guess I'll start with the whole word first now and then in parentheses, put the acronym. It's not a problem.

I should be able to help you with any issues this weekend (normally I'm gone on the weekends) as I'm going to my state's airshow.

Gunna see some of them Blue Devils... :sly:

Thanks mate. Like I said, since my wheel is at hospital I'm jonesin for some sim action so for the moment I'm just flying and having fun while everything's working, and getting myself hooked on it so I'll have the desire to tinker. This weekend I'll have time to start reinstalling and tweaking stuff and getting serious.

Just finished the Executive Tour, it was fun. Tricky though, took me several tries to figure out to follow the shuttle. Then I couldn't see the runway (rain storm) and the green arrow led me to an approach that was at a 90 degree angle to the runway. :indiff: So I had to fly blind in the opposite direction and then set up for approach without being able to see the runway until the very last minute. Eventually I got it lined up and had a smooth landing right in the middle of the tarmac. The Secretary said he'd recommend me for a promotion. :dopey:

not sure if you know... but if you press Y, you enter slew mode, and you control where you want to go with the joystick. F1 to go down, F3 to go up slow, F4 to go up fast.

Googled it, very interesting. That definitely would have helped tonight. Feels a bit cheaty so I'll probably only use it for emergencies or when I get way lost.

I tried pressing Y and Ctrl+S while flying and nothing happened. Looked like they were mapped correctly but if I press them while flying nothing happened. Am I missing something?

what???

If you press Y, it should look like the sim pauses. Then you push your yoke forward for, well forward, left for left, etc...

CTRL+S should give you the top down view...

Nothing happened when I pressed either of them. Shift+S would cycle through the default views but Ctrl+S didn't do anything and neither did Y. I checked the control settings and both appear to be mapped correctly, but they don't seem to work. I was in mid-flight when I tried, is that the correct time to do it?

Any idea how I troubleshoot this? The other keyboard commands seem to work fine, at least the ones I've used so far (gear, flaps, engine, view, zoom, seat up/down, lights, etc.). Maybe it will rectify itself when I reinstall this weekend.

It is my friend....

Hmm... It doesn't always do that... Or is that just for screenies?
If you used the 'Upload a File' button or copy/pasted an image from your computer, then it will resize it since it was uploaded to GTP's server. To avoid this, you can use an online image hosting service and then paste it in. If you do it correctly it should say 'click to view full size' or something like that when you hover over the image.

Some screens from the last few days

I have to say I absolutely love flying into Schiphol now. I wish there were more online events on VATSIM to it...

And right now I'm doing my last flight in the 757 from Atlanta to Memphis so I can do my 767 check ride probably later tonight.

The I won't have to worry about running out of fuel on my way to Amsterdam anymore...

This was mine earlier:

Last flight and I passed my 767 First Officers exam, so now I await the check ride assignment.

Edit:

Passed the CR. It was from KSFO to KLAX, FL290. No AP or AT at or below 10k, so that was fun.

Right now doing a flight from Seattle to Hong Kong. Should be there in about 13 hours and 20 minutes, or around 2:00pm EST...
