That looks really really good Jay, some lovely scenery indeed! 👍

Thanks :)

Today I was practicing some abnormal procedures like engine-out takeoffs (circle then land), zero slat and flap landings (high speed), go arounds into hold pattern then VOR approaches, tail strike takeoffs, rejected takeoffs etc.

In this case I was doing a 25knot crosswind approach which is the operational max crosswind limit. Yes believe it or not the aircraft is on course nicely, thats how you counter 25 knots of crosswind without dipping the wings too much (also known as crabbing, oh and thats me flying not a autopilot)

This was another 25 knot crosswind approach but this time I had a random engine problem (random failures enabled) on engine number 2 as you can see, the engine was still functioning but smoking.

P.S don't mind the blurry background this was taken from the aiport tower zoomed in a great deal

Playing FSX (and Acceleration, the expansion pack), I fell in love with the EH-101 Merlin. I started flying helicopters a lot more, especially after discovering HoverControl's website.

A very neat coincidence then that Eagle Dynamics, the team behind Lock On: Modern Air Combat, was designing the first in a new line of games around a helicopter. This first title in the Digital Combat Series was aptly named Black Shark, after the nickname the Russians give to their Ka-50. A genuine survey sim the likes the flight sim community has never seen before. A game where TrackIR truely pays off, and every system, every physical aspect, is accurately and meticulously modeled.

It takes a while coming to grips with the beast, but once you do, it is an absolute bliss to fly around in near virtual perfection. I'd dare say Black Shark is to helo/flight simming what GTR and the likes is to pc racing simulation.

So speaking of helicopters, how do you guys manage to control them in FSX? I'm perfectly fine once I'm moving forward, but I can't hover at all or make anything near a graceful landing or take off. Its like they need some sort of trim adjustment for the rotor at times.

I enjoy the extra challenge flying them around, using the cyclic and collective (joystick and throttle) to fly through canyons and such, but any sort of helicopter maneuvers are just downright embarrassing.

Well, yeah, I can hover her in FSX... a bit, holding her steady is possible, but not thĂ t easy.

In Black Shark you do indeed have trim. It sorta recenters your stick. What happens is you push a trim button, and the new center-point for the stick will be what your control inputs are like at that moment.

I find helo flying in Black Shark to be a lot different than helo flying in FSX. In FSX it's twitchy, I like it less, but, I'm no expert, so I couldn't say which is more realistic in the end of the day. One of the things the helicopters in FSX lack is stabilisation, or damping, from my understanding most modern helicopters have stabilisation channels, a sort of continuously working autopilot, but somehow when you're flying in FSX you cannot reap the benefits of this.

It takes practice with FSX helicopters, at first it is hard to hover and land but with time you get really good at it all about throttle control really.

I am intested in this new Chopper sim buy the Lock on devs, though please don't down grade their work by comparing it to GTR (in terms of simulation). ;)

So I went flying around Miami, starting off in the F-4U Corsair. Making lots of low passes over boats, cruise ships, harassing Cessnas which were far too slow to try any formation flight with. Then I caught sight of an Airbus that had just departed from an airport, about 4nm away and at 5000ft and climbing. Switched aircraft to the F/A-18 and had some fun. I found out the hard way that AI aircraft do not appear in replays, so I lost a few good screenshot opportunities. The Airbus finally settles in at 33000ft, somewhere around 260-280KIAS. It just so happens that the Hornet likes to fly around 250KIAS or will accelerate all the way up to 290-300KIAS, very tough to make small throttle adjustments and notice any reaction in speed. Finally made a decent pass over the wing going too fast to hang around with the Airbus. Roughly 60 miles out from the coast, ironically I ended up due east of the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility. Why is it ironic? Check my chosen livery.

So enough blabbering, here's what I made away with.

And on another topic, I was flying the J-3 Cub and having some really weird behavior from it during takeoff and landing. Around 30mph in the takeoff, the stall warning appears at the bottom right of the screen. Once it gets going fast enough for the tail to lift, its as if I'm doing full left rudder and full right aileron. I finally pulled it off the ground by holding the stick bank and getting it to twist out of that motion, and once it was airborne it behaved fine. Did the same thing when I landed and crashed it though, when the landing was fine otherwise. Any ideas? Weather was set to clear skies, so wind definitely wasn't the problem.

Nice pics 👍

Passengers on that Airbus A321 would have felt a little uncomfortable :D, I remember doing the same thing once chasing Qantas aircraft around in the Learjet 45.

As for your problem I am not sure, I havent had that odd problem before, sorry.

That was the default R22 or whatever heli. I have no idea what caused it to be like that, the visual model was just fine in the main screen. I've since reinstalled since I found that most of the aircraft I downloaded were garbage anyway.

And upon working my way through the missions, I actually did sort of well with the helicopter ones...Funny how that works out.

Good to hear. Did you do the Tokyo executive one? If so did you continue on with the rest of the mission (after you land back at Narita airport)?

I am generally very picky about addon aircraft I install, I used to get all sort of freeware aircraft and install them, most were garbage and now what I was after (Good for free). Now I buy a expensive payware aircraft from time to time and you get what you pay for.

Nah, haven't made it that far with the missions. I just got it reinstalled yesterday and got through all of the tutorial missions and the Executive Tour.

Well, I finally got my computer up and running. Kind of. FSX could look nearly as good as yours Jay, but I'm having a couple problems. First off, in Vista 64 while running DX9, of in the distance there are big patches of the ground that are invisible. Also, my airplanes are invisible. Running DX10, it won't use antialiasing, and there may be a couple other problems I didn't notice because I was frustrated.

Anybody else have problems like that on Vista 64?

It may have something to do with the fact that I got the game and expansion with a cracked .iso. But the graphics are fine on my other computer, though it runs very slow.

What do you mean with a cracked iso? The original game doesn't require that you insert the disc when you play.

The .iso lets me install it, and the crack makes it so I don't have to register it.

But I'm thinking about buying it to have the software. Something may have been lost when I copied the files from my other computer. That computer, the one that has the original download, runs the game completely.

Maybe it's a graphics card issue, Iono.

It Run's smooth which in FSX is something! Frame Wise the counters locked at 25fps.. If I turned down the detail it would go higher but frame rates mean nothing in FSX. Smooth is where it's at, the machines got to be responsive..
And I just love that amount visual candy..

So In the Pic's there is

FSX / SP2 Acceleration
FSGenesis Terrain
FTX Landclass and Textures for Australia.
FTX Airports. (Hervey Bay)
Lotus L-39 Albatross Plane
Default Bell 206 with OZx Freeware repaint.
OZx airfields for Australia (freeware) over 200 airports.
Weather Engine and Cloud/Water/Runway textures are from REX2.0

It's Running at 1920x1200 on an i7 920 Overclocked to 4.0Ghz with 6GB Ram a Raptor Drive for FSX and a GTX 285 1GB Graphics Card.

There's a fair bit of tunning to do inside FSX and Windows 7RC to get it like this. but it's not beyond the capailities of most.

Cheers

M

I dont think I have the patience to try and get FS2004 running like taht, that said I'm airly happy with how mine looks!

Could anyone provide me with any advice? I bought FSX last year, and registered the code online. Then the game had a meltdown (refused to open) and I was force to reinstall. I opened it up and it said I had 30 minutes freeplay before I had to register the game! When my 30 minutes were up I put the code in and it was rejected because that code had been used before! What can I do about this issue, as I have been wanting to use FSX to practice flying as I haven't flown since October last year (and I want to freshen up before I resume my lessons).

Call Microsoft and explain the situation. It's what I did when mine refused to activate. They gave me another code to get it to activate. And It's running Great Now

Indeed you have to call Microsoft, they will get you going again quickly.

Speaking of FSX, I have been doing a fair bit of flying and repainting lately, even finally finshed my world tour.

I notice many FSX users in this thread are info custom scenery except me. I have been just concerned with the simulation side of aircrafts and systems but lately I have been noticing FSX scenery is rather dull and generic in many places (not all).

So anyone have some scenery package suggestions? preferably:

*Global or atleast country packages by the same developer
*Pretty good on the frame rate (some hit is fine)
*Ease of installation
*Payware is fine, I have no problems buying my mods

Suggestions? :)

Thanks, actually I did check them out shortly after making my post, I installed the Tasmania 'demo' and I am quite impressed.

Couple problems though, at the moment only Australia really exists and most of my flights head out or exclude Australia, and while I am more then willing to pay for addons, $150+ just for one country (or $50 per quarter) is a little more than I think I am willing to go for scenery.
Not saying it is a rip off or anything it's just I don't think it will be worth it for me for just one country that I wont use all that much. Though I might get the AU Blue package as it has my home state as well as 3 other capital cities. Also keep in mind I am at 30000feet+ most the time, but I am probably going to buy the PMDG J41 soon which would make better use of the scenery. :)

Had any experience with Ultimate terrain X or any others?

*EDIT*

I flew over Tasmania again to have another look and once again very Impressed with FTX visuals and performance, so I went ahead and bought the FTX AU blue package and the PMDG Jetstream J4100, now it's time to get into some regional stuff. :)
