Flipping on kerbs.

I almost forgot about my Nascar roll and it was a good one too :)

I was running the Nascar race on Motegi and got bumped down onto the apron in turn 2, got side ways skid across the track, hit the wall then got t-boned by another car. My car went into a barrel roll down the straight and must have did about 10 full rolls before it came to a stop

by the way, the kerbs in tokyo route 246, and the trial mountain final chicane, are infamous car flippers too...especially on a hard suspension~

I rolled my M3 CSL on Cape Ring very easily. Clipped a kerb at about 90mph and it just flipped.

It's good that you can roll cars but I wish the damage model was a bit better to smash windows and dent panels more severely.

 Madrid Mini Reverse
That track is awful in so many ways - like the pit lane guardrail that's smack in the middle of the most natural line to take toward it. :boggled:

I never flipped a car there.
But in gt5 I did flip a honda z act on forward Madrid Mini in a kei car seasonal on what I think is the same curb that sort of juts out at an odd angle.

Just to show you the exact place of the incident. Twice I've fallen victim of this kerb. As I mentioned, once in GT5 and once in GT6. Same exact place, and the flip was almost identical.

I do remember that flip. It was scary. The car seemed to have caught air underneath and it basically turned it into a wing flipping it backwards. I know GT6 doesn't do this, but sometimes you get a feeling that cars start bouncing for no reason and might just flip. But the physics are weird because once you lift you tires from the ground, gravity seems to diminish greatly.
i dont know if GT6 flips the cars that way or not but sometimes cars catch air underneath, rendering steering almost useless in certain downforce adjustments

Pics? Lol

I wish I had them, I watched the replay and it was awesome but then I forgot to save it and it was gone :(

I was surprised by a sudden roll on the first turn in the half-sized version of Cape Ring. Bumped over the right hand turn at just around 50mph in a McLaren MP4-12C. It was not even a sharp turn but it flipped upside down like there was a spring under it.

Nearly flipped the Suzuki gsxr4 at motegi on the kerb turn 4. Not quite the physics I expected. Hell of a little car tho.

Am I the only person who hasn't had issues with this?

I have this problem when I really push beyond the car's limit and go for the kerbs very aggressively, but I've only flipped once at the Club Corner at Silverstone with the Toyota 86 Base Model IIRC

My 15 AE GT86 flipped at trial mountain, trough the tunnel into the rocky section (the 1st right hander) completely unexpeted at about 30mph......

Anyone remember that Le Mans flip that sent that LMP mercedes flying over the track for a good 20 feet in the air, and that guy was driving in a straight line (downforce be crazy yo). Well theres the lift off throttle excuse, when you ease off the throttle, weight transfers from rear to the front, so when you clip a curb and you eased off the throttle (usually you do because the curbs are for the corners) the weight moves to the front so you have a high chance of spinning or flipping. Sometimes its surprising, like driving a Miata on Mt. Panorama, no screeching or lack of grip, car suddenly rolls over as I hit the curb, thank goodness I was doing a simulator.

I was dicking around in iRacing with the Honda LMP car at Road America and had a similar experience. After smashing the front bodywork off, I was headed up the hill on the main straight at high speed and as I crested the hill, the front lifted up and soon after I was flipping through the air. I thought it was pretty cool that the physics account for underbody lift.

Not exactly sure what happened here, just hit a slight bump mid corner and it went up on it's side, would of been a flip if I hadn't been online.

Re my earlier post bout the Suzuki gsxr4 nearly flipping, raced it around cape ring full track, actually flipped it 3 times in 1 lap after hitting kerbs. now my thinking is, low centre of gravity, wide wheelbase compared to height, shouldn't really go over that easy, but, maybe oversteer contributed by taking it over balance point. Not sure the undertray would contribute that much downforce at the speeds it happened. Learned to stay away from kerbs. Funny glitch.
And off topic.
Suzuki GSXR4 is my car of the week.
Why haven't I heard this car mentioned before?

I flipped an Evo at turn 9 at Willow Springs. I don't remember exactly whathappened, but I was a bit ambitious with the kerb where it dips down at the apex and it through me over.

You know that last chicane right before the last hairpin at the Nurburgring GP?

I managed to flip my Nissan GTR GT3 there whilst only doing 40 mph. Had a good laugh then I got perplexed.

I've rolled 2 cars in GT6 so far. A Corvette C7 at Willow Springs: Big Willow. I went overboard with the curb uses before the long final right hander. Dragged a tyre over the inside of the curb and over it went.

Second car was the GT-R touring car. Nurburgring GP circuit and that final chicane. Clipped the final curb on it and over it went.

Nearly rolled my Caterham (stock) on the final corner of Bathurst.

And it wasn't quite a traditional roll, but there's a little dip on the edge of the track on Matterhorn Rotenboden that did this to my Rocket:

The Rocket has a much stiffer suspension tune (it's on slicks and is set up to run with LMP cars), so that probably played a part in this.

On the subject of the Rocket, it turns out that if you raise the suspension and soften everything as far as possible, then add full camber with racing softs, it the tyres will catch and it will roll if you so much as look at the steering wheel. Makes for a very interesting car to drive.

The last turn on Big Willow, i can flip almost any car if i hit the inside curb. Anybody else have that problem?

I didn't think to save the replay...
That's a shame.

Excellent visual aid. 👍

Unlike some others... ahem

I'll show myself out.....

I've only had the problem with the vintage Lancer. And I drove it quite a bit in gt5 & I don't remember it being quite so enthusiastic to lift up at all.
And again yesterday on Tokyo... I was in the vintage Lancer and I got that sense it was going to lift up a few times... I was terrified of hitting a curb.
