They had to, softs were not gonna make it to the end, and they needed different tires
 
It was either soft or hard or an extra stop. Leclerc did two stints on mediums.

Now Ferrari needs rain in the worst way. Or a Max spin, which just happened.

That won't help tyre management.
 
Verstappen is so lucky his car ended facing forward.
 
Now it's mainly a question of whether Max can make those tires last

Edit: and Sainz and Hamilton may do something interesting with strategy ending on softs

Strategy failure it appears for the Scuderia.
 
Looks like Verstappen spun because of a very tiny water puddle or something. These second round of pitstops are crazy. Leclerc is put on the long stint with the hards, that means Sainz is going for the softs... provided the drizzle doesn't get worse.

Leclerc may have had a better chance on a 3 stopper.

I don't see those hard tires clicking in any time soon. Damn, Leclerc got shafted again by the Ferrari strategy. Really should have made him stay out longer on those mediums before pitting for softs.
