Has...has anyone read this? https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/1851...t.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=twitter

Translated, in case you can't make it through the pop-ups:

The title contender who walks around in Abu Dhabi quietly and in anonymity? Forget it. Wherever Max Verstappen goes, the photographers and camera crews are never far away. Yet the Red Bull driver also walks around the Yas Marina Circuit as if all those snoopers do not exist. Focused and relaxed at the same time.

In the run-up to the Formula 1 final, his team keeps away from him as much as possible. In a special Zoom meeting, Verstappen spoke to no fewer than sixty journalists. Then he frees himself from his television obligations only for De Telegraaf time for an exclusive interview. One on one, at the back of the Red Bull Racing hospitality area.

You have been in Dubai for a few days this week. Have you calmed down a bit?

“Yes, I do. I don't have much trouble with that anyway. Everything that happens on the track does not affect my state of mind once I am home or elsewhere. I celebrated my girlfriend's birthday and my sister became a mother for the second time. It was really nice to read those messages and see pictures of the little one.”

The whole of the Netherlands seems to be working on this race and a possible title. Do you get something out of that?

“Of course, I sometimes get something forwarded. It's really beautiful to see. At the same time, I also try not to read too much. That's why I don't get everything, but I think that works the best. Everyone is looking forward to the final, but I approach this Grand Prix just like any other race. I always say, "You can't force things." Everyone knows that I will do my best and that I will always go the extra mile. I realize that people in the Netherlands generally hope I win. That's pretty normal. In England that will also be the case for him.”

You don't pronounce "Lewis Hamilton" and "Mercedes" anymore, I notice.

"That's right. That happens during a season like this. Too much has happened for that.”

Is that because of the race at Silverstone, when you crashed hard after a touché with Hamilton?

“Not just through that moment, but throughout the season. The image I have of certain people has changed. And no, not in a positive way. It doesn't matter to me, it's not that I hate it. But I've seen that when the pressure comes on, certain people show a different face. Then the true nature emerges.”

Do you think Hamilton is afraid of you?

“He will never admit that. At least I'm not afraid of him. Yeah, I think I'll make him nervous if he sees me in his mirrors. He's a different driver than me, less aggressive. He doesn't know how to race like I do. I can't blame him for that either, because he was never able to learn that like I did from my father." An equal number of points for the last race is almost unique. But do you think you are the best driver?

“I think you should be like that if you're a Formula 1 driver. So I say yes, absolutely! But I don't need to hear that from anyone else. I don't need that recognition. I find it much more important what I think myself, and what the people who are close to me think. If I had been in his car, the season would have been decided long ago.”

At Mercedes they characterize you as a super-aggressive driver, who will do everything to eliminate Hamilton. Do they have a point?

“I don't want to take him out, I want to beat him. That's another wording. Some people find me aggressive, others very aggressive and some people don't. I think I am myself. The last games I have to defend more, because we are a bit slower. I don't have the luxury of checking a lead or driving away now. And yes, I do everything I can to win. If I don't think like that, I'd better stay home. If I hadn't had that attitude, we wouldn't be here with an equal number of points. Then he was already champion.”

Do you have the idea that the FIA motorsport federation would rather Hamilton take his eighth world title?

“If you look at certain decisions, at least I don't feel they are on my side. At the last race in Saudi Arabia I am penalized and other drivers don't even have to approach the stewards after a similar situation. Why is it suddenly different for me? With today's knowledge, that blowout in Baku (Verstappen missed a victory that seems certain, ed.) has been extremely painful. In Hungary I was kicked out by his teammate (Valtteri Bottas, ed.) and at Silverstone by himself. I lost a lot of points there.”

“In England he was given a 10-second time penalty, but won the race. Now the FIA is apparently also working on a possible crash, because suddenly it is pointed out that you as a driver can then get points deduction. I think that's ridiculous. Now and then not, as he drove into me on purpose. The hype about the equal number of points doesn't interest me either. I should have been champion by now. Let me say that I have not been happy with decisions that have been made.”

Who, besides yourself, do you wish a title the most?

“Anyone who has contributed even a little bit to this can claim it from me. Of course my father for a huge part. Thanks to him I am here. In addition to the team Helmut Marko and Christian Horner and my race engineer Gianpiero; but actually everyone within Red Bull has meant something to me. The Pex family has also been very important to me in the past. They are also present here in Abu Dhabi. If it would work, I think it would be great for them too.”

Thanks guys.

Ok so not much chance of a Safety Car but Red Bull does have three cars that can help in various situations. For instance they could get Tsunoda and or Gasly (discussed behind doors prior to the race obviously) to do a long first stint... that way Hamilton would catch up to them after his pitstop and lose time overtaking them. Even though I hate Horner I believe that is as far as he could go with dirty tactics. I can't imagine anything as dirty as Crashgate happening ever again in F1.

As much as it pains me to say this, I think it's game over for Lewis. 0.4 sec is a huge gap. I don't think Perez' tow is worth that much since the straight is curved and short. And unlike last week's quali, Max doesn't seem ragged on his lap so he's not overdriving the car. Lewis might get ahead temporarily with an overcut, but Max will just catch up to him and force a pass as usual.

There's a thread on reddit saying Merc didn't spend the 2 development tokens this year. Which just makes it all the more remarkable that Lewis is able to keep the title chase alive for this long.

It’s gonna come down to tire wear. If max burns up those softs and needs a two stopper and if Lewis can perform well on a one stopper it’s gonna be super close.

It's still a bit up in the air. We'll find out tomorrow to see how the race pace is. From what Lewis/Mercedes were saying their tires weren't in the window for the pole lap, but they did see that Red Bull had good race pace during practice. If Lewis doesn't have the pace tomorrow to challenge, his hope will be that the one stop is the preferred strategy and he can hang on to the back of Max. His pace will also determine whether they have the option to undercut Max. And that's all assuming the start goes as we think it will.

edit: Though last year's qualifying gap wasn't that big and it seemed like an easy victory for Verstappen. We'll have to see how the soft tires work out. Maybe Max can one stop on those.

Very nicely done:

ENJOY the race.

Okay.. I like F1, but this is corny lol

Anyone who remotely paid attention to the beginning of the season would understand that regs and awful race directing and stewardship are the reason why this championship is so tight.

That said, I'm excited to see the end of this, especially so we can see how 2022's cars will be in just over 100 days.

They were way too generous with Max. Yes he is quick but he has to do a lot of growing up before he can be considered a potential legend. I see that more in Leclerc and Russell to be honest. And as far as the new cars, I am also excited about them but I will definitely miss those beautiful 13" rims. I can't understand why they couldn't just leave that alone.

It's certainly going to be interesting when VER starts racing wheel to wheel with people like LEC and RUS in future. They're part of the same younger generation that can be just as agressive as VER and won't just yield like HAM usually did.

But following someone also wears out tires faster even more so if one is attacking, but same can be said for defending, it also over heats the car faster.
Hopefully Perez can get infront somehow and slow lewis down enough for max to make his pitstop and remove the chance of lewis making a lead.

Max will lead for at least the first stint until strategy comes in. Won't stop Lewis from putting pressure on though.

Mercedes has screwed big time with strategy calls this season. I would not be surprised if they end up underestimating Red Bull and fudge it all up.

It all depends on those softs. Pirelli suggest they're not too different from the medium and could last long enough to do a one stop but they've got very limited data for the new layout. If they go off too soon VER will either be forced to 2-stop or his hards could suffer towards the end and face an attack.

HAM strategy should be pretty simple, bog standard 1-stop. But of course safety cars could change all that.

Great lap by Max. It is really impressive how much inherent downforce the Red Bull has that they can run such a low downforce wing yet be still as quick or quicker in the corners while being fastest in the speed trap. Given the track characteristics, it seems to have suited them to be able to pull off their lower downforce wing with the corners opened up for the last sector but hopefully that makes it easier for Lewis to follow and I think he also had a bit more margin in the car to get out. The tow was very minimal advantage in the end due to how they did it. They just had that raw speed as Max was up without it on his next lap and Sergio was about half a tenth off Max in the middle sector himself and faster than the Mercedes.

Going to be very hard for Lewis with the Red Bull being extremely efficient on the straights, they won't have to push as much in the corners like previous race to stay ahead on the straights. Hopefully Lewis can stay in DRS range and hound Max that way as that will make the Mercedes really efficient and maybe able to push Max into a lockup or even breeze past but defending for Lewis will also be hard if does get ahead. Talking of lockups, that one Max did gives also better hope for the race in terms of distance and speed for Lewis even if Red Bull looked fast on all the tyres but seems a more costly mistake for Max than last race. If only circuit could good get a good clean, then I think that will also advantage Lewis as then the Red Bull will suffer a bit more in the corners.

Pirelli are still worried about the kerbs. I really hope we're not going to have another "AND LOOK AT THAT!" moment. Partly because it'll be anticlimactic, partly because this time it'll just be Crofty screaming "MAX/HAM HAS A PUNCTURE!" as loud as possible.

As noted above, they think VER could one-stop just as quickly as HAM but he'll need to do some tyre management.

Weird watching channel 4 being a feed of the Sky Sports channel, but grateful. Can't imagine how laggy the online streams are gonna be today with all the curious Fairweather fans.

The news of Mazepin's withdrawal could have remained unannounced and nobody would have noticed.
The real disappointment is that Fittipaldi isn't able to take Mazepin's place (and probably massively outperform him) since he hasn't run any session this weekend.

Also I'm willing to bet there'll be at least a small group of people starting in with "nyyeeeeeer if there was a full field then the results would have been completely different, this was obviously rigged!!!" if they don't get the result they want after this race. The best conspiracy theories are the ones that people have to really reach for.

Crofty's shouting is awful, especially for someone with tinnitus. Needs to take a chill pill

Haven't been this excited for a race in over 10 years. Bring it on 🙌
