For the first time since 2003, Formula 1 heads to the principality in June for its entry into the Triple Crown of Motorsport. The slightly smaller cars and Overtake mode should make them slightly more raceable than previous seasons around the circuit which has been very difficult to pass on for its whole history, but seemed to truly not suit the previous generation of cars. Close walls, iconic camera angles and history buried in every piece of Armco lining the Mediterranean streets, Monaco is here to stay for the moment and now plays host to round 6 of the season. After an enthralling Canadian Grand Prix last time out seeing another Mercedes win, will George Russell and Kimi Antonelli be able to put on a similar show as they did in Canada, or will the circuit require a lot more patience and composure than either showed in Montreal to cause some friction? Will this finally be the race where a non-Mercedes wins a Grand Prix? We will only find out at the MONACO GRAND PRIX!

Some nice one-off liveries again for the race as well as some interesting technical solutions for extra downforce since active aero elements are not necessary on the car.

And then theres also the Audi, which looks like a nine-year old discovered Microsoft paint to design the livery

Monaco is one of the few (Hungary the other I think) where the Start line and Finish line are the same 🙂
 
The Ferraris looking very good in FP1 as expected. Could be a great battle for the win tomorrow between Charles and Lewis, though I wouldn't count out another rocket lap from Kimi.
 
Monaco is a terrific challenge... once. Eighty one-lap time trials isn't the best spectacle.

I can't understand people hating on Monaco when we can see F1 cars completely on the edge like nowhere else. Simply lovely ❤️

I agree. For me Monaco qualifying is one of the best sessions of the calendar.

I’m part of the small minority that enjoys man v machine. I don’t care about the number overtakes - I want to see people on the limit of their ability and Monaco does that better than a lot of tracks.

You can have an amazing game of football/soccer and the score be 0-0

Nobody disputes the challenge of qualifying at Monaco, its Q3 might be the single-most critical lap of the year, but the racing is awful.

That is racing to me. I watch a lot of motorsport. Time trails, hill climbs etc so to me it’s not just the person who completed the most laps in a circle for it to be racing.
 
I still remember the Alonso - Schumacher battles at Imola in the 2000s lacking overtakes completely but didn't lack excitement. There are many more tracks on the calendar producing bad racing but didn't get this hate. And while many people are complaining about asphalt run-offs and track limits and no consequences for failures Monaco delivers this with barriers.
 
Watching FP1 now and to me the size difference between the 2025 cars and these 2026 cars is much more noticeable here than any track so far. I guess that's natural given the tight spaces that is Monaco. The previous gen cars just looked so huge trying to get around here.
 
The cars may be smaller than last year but they are still way too big for Monaco.
Make Monaco a one off. Put them all in superkarts.
We'd get to see an actual race and i can't imagine any of the drivers having an issue with it.
 
What is going on with George.

Cash out option on my Pre season bet on him being champion getting smaller and smaller.

Not sure, but I didn't really see him being able to go up against Antonelli considering his performance. I think we're seeing how he performs under pressure.

That said, the start is going to be fun.
 
Honestly, insane laps from Kimi, Max and Lewis today. Charles fighting for every bit of time he can find, only to over-commit and hit the wall at the end. Just an all-around superb Monaco qualifying session.

Now, fingers crossed that tomorrow won't be as much of a precession as it usually is, though I am being highly optimistic.
 
Kimi is just incredible. I feel almost sorry for George.

Having points for an F1 time trial event would be cool, with an additional superkart race.

Even better would be extending those superkart races to other weekends and them replacing sprint races but that's never going to happen.

Once again, Ferrari doesn't disappoint by being utterly disappointing on Saturday after seemingly looking like they actually had a chance through the free practices. All they have left is the start advantage, and even that's been blunted somewhat.

Given how Piastri collapsed last season, it's not over for Russell but this is definitely not a good weekend for him so far.
 
Seeing the Ferrari performance during fp1 and fp2 I really thought this was going to be between Lewis and Charles. I had Max at maybe P4 or P5 and he is in P2. Mega lap by Kimi...if he gets a good getaway tomorrow, he will probably win it but if he doesn't, I feel like this race might be between Lewis and Max for the win. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

I might be an outlier, but I enjoy this circuit so much, there’s partly historical reasons, but also the fact that it has remained on the calendar despite the scale of the cars. The fact drivers have been able to squeeze what they can out of the car in the way they can is just fun to watch at any point.

I hope it remains.

I don't think you're on your own. I'd imagine that 99% of genuine F1 fans love this circuit for what it offers.
No other part of the calender will have you hiding behind a cushion like an onboard shot through the swimming pool. The skill and dedication of these drivers is on display here like nowhere else.
What we don't love is that the race was decided yesterday by the order the cars exited the pit lane in Q1 .
