Sounds like you missed the "dot" and thus the "point". ;)


Try refreshing the image, and follow the instructions. 👍

Keep in mind, it's not a "funny" pic, just a very clever one to show how our vision system can "fill in the gap" so to speak.

As you stare at the dot while the image shows false color, it's "burning in" on your retina. When the false colors change to black and white the after-image of the colors distorts your perception of the grayscale, and the area that was orange-ish appears to be blue, and the area that was blue-ish appears to be green. The illusion disappears if you look away from the dot because you're putting the image onto a new unconditioned area of your retina.

You can't look around the picture during any of that, you have to focus and stare and the dot in the center.

Similar things happen with images that you stare at, then move your eyes to a blank white wall. The nonsense image you were staring at becomes a full-color image on the wall.
 
It didn't work for me, then. I laughed, though, when it said "It's gonna be color until you move your eyes off the point" - I just did when I finished reading the sentence, and it turned into color.

When it goes blue/orange, stare at the dot for 30 seconds while moving your eyes as little as possible. After 30 seconds, it reverts to black and white. However, the 30 seconds of staring has depleted the receptor chemicals for orange and blue in your retinas. So when it reverts to black and white, those receptors are underdriven, making the complimentary colors appear because your retinas are still saturated with the normal amounts of those chemicals.

I suspect it has to do with how very out of place the Fiero is with the other cars listed... Although to it's credit, at least it has some fairly historical value, and as it fortold in the article, now that gas has hit $5 a gallon, a 50 mpg Fiero may not be a bad thing after all. :D
