I would have joined WRS in 2005-2006, but at the time it required a gameshark to prove lap times. I don't know how things have changes, but right now I am content running online race series and working on my driving by other means.

With GT5 you can easily save and export replays to a USB drive and upload them with a computer so it's a pretty easy process requiring access to a PC and a $4.99 usb thumb drive.

The thing is even if you don't care to run offline time trials being on the official GTP Registry will "unlock" some pretty cool online races, series and special events (including 3D3 races which will shortly to be restricted to GTP Registry members only). Stay tuned over the next 4-6 weeks and you'll see what I mean.

IMO, it'll be worth an investment of about an hour to setup and get a GTP_ tag account up to level 16 and then a few hours driving the ring to get a decent time in the qualifier. Just my opinion and mileage may vary.

I bring it up now because (i) the registry just opened again today after spec II required a re-evaluation of the physics vs handicap calculations and (ii) we're running the ring this week in this series and any practice on the track will kill two birds with one stone.

Here's a (strange) image from the Monza race:

Yeah I just saw it...Im gonna try out this setup and see how the Denso copes...

Coolers . If your driving style is similar to mine and you like the nose to pull you into the apex , then this will suit you just fine .

The tuning philosophy behind this setup seems to work with most , if not all , the cars in GT5 .

The basics behind the setup are -

Disturb the rear under braking .
Pull the nose into the ideal apex as soon as the brake pedal releases .
Enable all available traction as soon as possible .

I'm sure the setup has more potential and could possibly be refined to gain more laptime . If you make any improvements or time gains then just post them here if you like mate .

If want to drive the Denso next season then this philosophy might help .

Or , on the other hand , you might dislike the setup . But don't worry if you think it sucks mate as my driving style might be very different from yours . 👍

There's no way somebody punted on the first chicane into last place *this season* would have won the race running mid 1'45s... forget winning by 30 seconds.
I would speculate that this season features faster & more consistent drivers . I think you were making this point also in your post ? 👍
Gamesta
Did about 6 laps fastest was 8:25.239 tires lasted about 4 laps.
I had a quick test session this morning & did 1 timed lap on the DS3 just for a reference point .

I posted an 8:17.613 & i'm absolutely the certain the DFGT will make me go faster here .

Keep pushing Gamesta , lots more time to come from the Green Hell yet . 👍
Anyone else laid down any times yet ?

My cornering theory is similar to yours, I need a pointy front end and I dont really care about oversteer since it can be controlled by feathering the gas...I just cant bear understeer...

I tend to brake will turning in so im braking before the apex but accelerating after the apex...

Sounds good . Yep , same here . I'm really not a fan of understeer also . It ruins the act of balancing the car on the limit , as well as turning an exciting car into a boring one if not dialled out .

Another thing to note about the Denso setup I laid out is that it's only applicable with the current rules .

What I mean is , an increase in torque for the Denso for next seasons regs will have to be factored into the setup with increased LSD values . So therefore a turbo-charged Denso will not behave the same with my outlined setup I suspect , as this is tuned with natural aspiration torque values powering the drivetrain .

Just increasing LSD values should fix that issue quite easily.

I personally don't like a car to be too loose for longer races. For a time trial it's a different story. The general impressions of the setup I use here from drivers like Hydro and KK and Dragon is "How they heck do you drive that setup?". Well to each his own...

I prefer to brake early, turn in off throttle (or maybe just at the tail end of the brake zone with reduced brake pressure), stay off throttle to reduce the push and let all the tire grip work for the cornering, then get back on throttle rather quickly for exit and before the apex when possible. Throttle control required on exit is anything between go easy to control push to jam it completely pre-apex. I have found in close races with KK, Dragon and Hydro that I often have a slightly lower corner speeds, but often a more consistent exit. The loose car will exit a bit better if the driver is perfect, but will also need to be caught or managed more often with throttle on exit while I'm at full throttle.

The risk with this approach and a slightly tighter car (not tight, but tighter than KK's setup for example) is that if you are pushing the car beyond it's limits you trash the front tires completely. The car doesn't like to be bump drafted into the braking zone like in the first stint at Monza. However, if you manage your corner speed well the tire wear is very good. The upside is the car doesn't often snap out and it's pretty easy to control over an hour long race if you focus on slow in / fast out every corner and every lap.

I don't know... results speak for themselves. When I stay on track in this series I usually have a decent shot at the race win or at minimum a podium.

Of course in 3D3 races I usually use a setup from CSL or Vagabond and they like them somewhat loose offline which translates to ridiculously loose online. I can drive those cars fine and I've won several of those races against some pretty fast drivers.

So I think it's about flexibility in your driving style as well. If you run an event without tuning (e.g. recommended garage) you have to adjust your driving to the car... the car can't be adjusted to you.

you have to adjust your driving to the car... the car can't be adjusted to you.

Words from a passionate man, sounds like something senna would have said....

I agree when you say a tighter setup is easier and more comfortable over a 30 lapper...I guess its all down to driving styles and preferability...Eg. Jenson and Lewis...

The only reason I like having pointy front ends is because it requires less effort therefore I can concentrate on trying to achieve maximum cornering effiency (10% wheel slip etc). To achieve the same cornering speed etc in a tighter car results in my front tires melting off...

You raise a good point there . My setups have been ' pointy ' at the front recently , with a very balanced rear at the exit . Suits me really well at the minute .

// For Everyone \\ - I've just been thinking about possible lapping scenarios on Sunday . I was wondering if we could observe the Nurburgring tradition of faster cars passing any lapped traffic on the ' left ' , with the slower driver moving to the right ?

The reason I ask this is because if you are trying to lap a slower car here , it is very difficult to get by unless there is a little co-operation involved .

And could lapped drivers , myself included , make sure you are always aware of who is behind you at all stages of the race ? Plus after being lapped , not to fight back to re-overtake ?

I've encountered attempted ' I want to unlap myself ' passing attempts this season , and believe me when I say that this is the wrong place to attempt it .

I don't mind a little oversteer on exit, but I hate lift-off oversteer because it makes me too tentative which is what makes the NSX such a challenge for me to drive. Another downside of my setup on this Calsonic is that I can't very effectively turn the car with the throttle. That can be a big help at times with other cars/setups I've used, but that technique has it's risks too so I don't mind just turning with the wheel. My hands are quicker than my feet (or foot in my case) :sly:

I have to manage entry speed very effectively and coast or very low throttle through lower speed corners. Takes some getting used to otherwise if you try to engage too much throttle mid corner you push and melt the tires as KK describes. The tighter setup takes a little more patience and precision on entry, but less risk mid corner and less precision required on exit.

I think the fastest drivers in the work prefer a loose setup (but not so wild as to kill your confidence) so as I improve I'll probably shift to the looser end of the spectrum.

I like that Idea TJ.

Also I find there are only 3 or 4 good opportunities in all of the 15 mile track that are good for passing or attempting an overtake maneuver this truly will be a test in close racing.

was able to run a lap here finally, did a 8.12.6xx. gonna be fun keeping it on track the whole race.

You should grab a stock Denso & try my setup to see if it's drivable for you . The lift off oversteer is very slight & highly managable . Also , you're winning races so your technique & setups must be very good to start with I think . 👍

That is quick mate . I think I can push to an 8.14 or 8.15 but I don't think I can go much quicker than that without taking some trees out in the process .

I highly doubt you will get lapped this race. Unless someone takes a break or spins out in every sector, I don't think anyone will. Considering the length of the track, you would have to be some 50 seconds off the pace to get lapped on Sunday.

Then again, the way I drive at night, it's not totally out of the question. :scared:

Thanks teamie 👍 . I was just working through possible scenarios , like someone having a bad race etc ... But yes , I agree that it is unlikely to happen .

Speaking of nightime , i'm going to run every practice lap from now until Sunday in the dark to re-familiarise myself with how it's going to feel .

I would recommend this to anyone who is struggling with the nightime aspect .

What sort of laptimes are you doing Sagaris ? Have you had any chance to practice yet ?

//Random Rant\\ The new PS3 update has ruined the browser char set again , browsing looks terrible . Meh Sony ....

I ran a short reconnaissance of 6 laps in two runs on Monday. Couldn't manage a hot lap without crashing so my best is only 8'28. Lots of work to do yet and lots of time to find. It's been a long time since I've run the ring in full anger.

Good effort mate . Keep pushing & the time will drop off i'm sure .

I'm a Nurburgring addict . The best advice I can give is keeping your rhythm is everything . Just by being a little cautious in the more tricky sectors will help you avoid crashing off .

You'll get there i'm sure , you're quick & consistent . 👍

Gamesta, have you decided on a (in-game) start time for the race?

TJ, I tried out your car settings and it's very noticeably less stiff in the suspension than Praiano's tune. I don't have times to compare because I ran Praiano's only during the day and yours only at night, but your tune absorbs the bumps much better, oversteers far less and is easier to drive on the ring. I'm going to keep using your tune on this track. 👍

As mentioned, I drove my first night laps and it went better than expected. I ran an 8'30 on my first night hot lap, despite losing 7 seconds right off the bat in the GP section since I had no idea where my breaking points and turns were. Once I got onto the Nordschleife, it started to feel natural again, as if I was driving on the back of hand. Unlike La Sarthe at night, you can drive here on instinct, and the camping lights help a little as well. Though I often left a little space on corner exit since the edge of the track isn't always easy to see/sense, I didn't lose that much time because of it.

Thanks man , that was everything I was going for . Additionally you'll find the kerbs easier to ride . Thus saving you more laptime around this place & making it easier to keep the car into a much needed rhythm.

Absolutely agree . 👍

Start time in game will be 2:30pm or 3:00 pm

I've got some bad news i'm afraid guys . I'm going to have to drop this league & PSN online play for a while . The reason for this is because I am going through a messy breakup with my fiancé of 4 years , ( Was due to get married in July ) . This will lead me to having to move out my home and it might be a little while before I can be properly re-connected for online play .

This should be taking place next week I think , i've got quite a few things to pack & organise . Sooner though is indeed better I think .

I will still be able to browse GTP , will still be available to be contacted & will return to competitive online racing with you guys as soon as I can .

Thankyou for letting me a part of this league Gamesta & thankyou also to everyone that races here , and the friendships I have gained along the way .

You guys rock . 👍

Glad to have you TJ the door is always open for you at the series.

Sorry TJ. Hope everything works out for you. You definitely added some spice to the grid and thread every week.

Thanks for your support guys , that means alot to me . 👍

Good luck for Sundays race & the start of the new testing thread .
I'll be back ......

I will have the table updated soon as ai have a chance teh Replay has been reviewed here are the penalties from the last round

GTP_Hydro -30 Points Speeding in Pitlane
Sagaris -18 Points Speeding in Pitlane
Gamesta666 -1 Point Speeding in Pitlane

All other incidents were unavoidable in my opinion

TJ, I hope things go well for you and hope you can move ahead of these troubled times. Good luck.

Yup I sped through the lane on my first stop. Was too fast and then tried to go 90 mph until it went to autodrive to make up for it. Went a little quick on exit too and I realized too late that I had drifted above the limit.

Awesome Thanks you!
