Gear ratios

how do i tune my gear ratios for drifting?

I drift a silvia and i pretty much use 3rd gear while i am in mid drift then i will upshift to 4th if i need to, but i mostly stay in 3rd.

Well, lets see, if you want more torque you move the auto set indicator to the left, and if you want a higher top speed, you move it to the right. In general, you cant have both, as far as I know... But since you're going for drifting, you probably wanna push the tranny setting towards torque (lower auto setting). In my SS AE86, I sit at auto 12, but I remember making a few changes to 2nd and 3rd gear, more torque I think.

Short gear ratios give you stronger torque under a smaller powerband.
Long gear ratios spread the torque over a wider powerband.

so if i am drifting i would need a long gear ratios

No, not necessarily. The gear setup is based on one's drift style and what feels good to them. If your going for nice long drifts with a lot of angle, I recommend puttin the "Auto" arround 16-18.

Also, how much HP does your Silvia have? I wanted to add more to the reply but need for info on your car.

When you are drifting, you shouldn't shift up. If you do, chances are you aren't doing a good drift because you shouldn't gain speed in mid-drift. If you enter the drift in 3rd gear, you should shift down in order to complete a shift lock drift. You'll get more angle and accelerate faster out of the drift. I personally use a "Close" transmission most of the time, saves money and saves you some tuning. ;)

then how would you negotiate an increasing radius corner?
you would have to start off in 2, or 3rd depending on car and corner, then as the corner gets wider, you would have to shift up in order to get a wider line. if you didnt you would hit the inside gaurdrail or grass.
plus on long corners, it might be nessecary to shift up to gain more rpm.

and in gt4 it rev matches for you, so you cannot do shiftlock.

the silvia has around 345hp, i do alot of feints and liftoffs, and some e-brake drifts.

i have been fooling around with the auto setting bar, and stuff trying to get a feel for what i like.

You should keep the auto setting bar in the "Tourque Area" You'll get better drifting results.

Try drifting manual, I find it a TON easier to control than automatic. It allows you to really wind the car out without a shift throwing the drift off.
