General discussions for GTA Vice City Stories

I get my copy on this sunday. Only $15 from circuit city, can't wait to play it, been playing lcs to get my skills back some. :)

After playing all the way through the story, I am of the opinion that this may be the best GTA game yet, if not for its rather short length.
It combines most of the good things Vice City offered (atmosphere, city design, gang AI, street races) and most of the good things San Andreas offered (free aiming, swimming, territory battles, high-poly models, drive-bys). And the load times are shorter than they were in San Andreas too.
I'm totally depressed about the lack of interior locations in the normal game world, though.

Oh God - more gang territory wars. I hated them in San Andreas. So boring and repetitive. I just hope that when they're all taken over, rival gangs stop attacking your territory and the cash just rolls in.

Yeah i was just about to post about that.

For some reason the Cholos (which, i hope, are now nonexistant in Vice City) kept attacking the one by the Police Station near Sunshine Autos? The Bikers pretty much always target that one too. Which reall sucks if you're way up the other end of the island and don't have a fast car at your disposal (have made it there in time every time though).

I thought taking over every business in the island would stop the attacks, but nup. May have to take over every business in the game, or just progress through the missions.

But oh well. :)

I really love the idea of constructing a business and choosing how big you want the business to be, and then the whole site becomes a construction zone complete with appropriate sounds. 👍

I smelled trouble right away and didn't take over any of the other gangs businesses. Just kept the original ones (which doesn't suffer attacks) and did the missions to level 15.
Is there anything unlocked by developing them, - building gets bigger but still the same missions (which is already max'ed). Or does it simply get you more income ???

Just unlocked the 2nd island btw., and tried out the planes.
I was hoping for handling like in SA, - but it's still the same toy-plane handling (although the Bi-plane has seperate rudder control) and a very low height-limit.

But the Jetski rocks !!!

Have you tried saving to stop an attack?? Worked on SA.

I just unlocked this... looks like a waste of time other then the extra money-- do we need the money or do these half to be done to advance the story anyone??

I had my first tough mission Jive Drive-- took me 8-10 tries... first the first half kicked my butt... then the 2nd half... not much past this.

Somehow I passed that mission 1st time. Hardest part for me until now was the shooting range, - oh god I miss the mouse aiming from PC.

If you want to explore then don't take over any businesses, - once you do you'll be attacked left and right (attacks seems much more frequent than SA).
You will need to take over some (5?) before progressing past the 2nd(?) mission on the East island

I've tried saving during an attack which didn't work, reloading the save didn't work either. The business will be damaged either way.
But it doesn't matter much, the business merely gets damaged not taken over (at least not on the 1st attack), you just have to go by and repair it.

Only thing that worked was starting a mission.
Once I was racing to defend and fell in the water, - went for what appeared to be a boat but turned out to be a hovercraft which triggered a race

Don't spend too much time exploring the 1st. island before opening the other. Once the East opens the West gets littered with vehicle side missions.

As GTA_Phreak said, doing so only damages the building. It does stop the attack, but no without repercussions. The same thing occurs with R3 missions.
I've noticed that dying trying to defend the business does not allow the business to be damaged, though.

Other than the very first one that is done under Marty, no. Though you may need more than one for a couple of later missions, I'm not sure as I had multiple ones at that point.

Just more income.

I disagree. I found the plane handling in SA to be too sensitive.

I have a question though: Can the rival gangs take territory back? I tried letting them do so to see and the results were inconclusive at best.

Starting to be a few spoilers so I will have to stop checking this thread-- :scared:

I did find the "hidden" packages finally-- found a 4th one before I thought what they might be-- then didn't know how to obtain them... finally figured it out.

Is everyone aware of the significance of what they are and the number (is it obvious to everyone or just me)-- kind of an easter egg but may not be apparent to everyone.

I am getting so sick of the gang wars its not even funny. To the point now where i don't even bother defending my businesess. :(

By me the attacks suddenly stopped, - don't know what happened (could be a storyline mission I completed).
I took over all biker places on both islands (-1 which can't be attacked for some reason), - leaving only sharks +1 biker (Cholos was already off the map before I started).
The Bikers attack the Sharks but not me, - strange.
But I'm not complaining, - gives me peace to complete the huge backlog of sides I've discovered :p

Sorry if I spoiled anything, - I guess that you have a lower spoiler threshold than I.
And yeah it's that annoying song "Neunundneunzig luftballons" (was that on VC soundtrack btw?)

The only mission that's given me real trouble so far was the one where you had to destroy the transmitters on the police stations. I kept getting killed at the last police station.

But the nice thing about Grand Theft Auto is that you can approach missions from very different angles and try different strategies. So it occured to me that there's an easier way to finish the mission and it worked. Easy!

And for some reason the gang attacks on my properties have stopped. I dunno why.

Same here, thankfully.

And to all Phil Collins fans - if you don't already know then i'm not going to say anything, but as you progress through the missions you will get a big surprise and the game will instantly become SO much better like it has for me. :D

You must have taken over already all the empire sites of a gang that used to attack you, or practically all of the empire sites. It could be the saving technique too.

Will there be record book for VCS? I hope there will be as this is also one good game where we can compete for the record achievement.

I've only taken over 9 out of 30 sites, so I don't know why the attacks should be stopping.

I wonder if the attacks are related to your recent attacks on enemy sites. I haven't had any attacks since I've stopped taken over other businesses.

Could also be caused by doing more missions? Like i got so sick of the attacks i went on a 'mission rampage' where i did quite a few storyline missions in a row and haven't had any attacks since.

I've noticed similar. I took over nearly all of the West Island, and then rattled off 10 or so missions. I didn't see another attack until I attacked one of their buildings.
I've also noticed that if you take a business from a gang that didn't originally have it (ie. when the Sharks try to move into the West Island) and took it from one of the other gangs (The Sharks took it from the Bikers), they don't start coming after you if you don't buy it.

Woohoo! 27 hours played and I'm only 47% done! How're everyone else doing so far?

I've also somehow managed a 182m jump according to my stats page. How'd I managed that?

I'm having some serious problems with the mission where I have to defend that idiot Lance as he rides his motorbike to Prawn Island behind a bunch of enemy cars and I have to take them out. Lance is an idiot because he can't ride for **** and has no guns, and isn't he aware of the accelerator that allows him to overtake these cars? And I'm also an idiot because it takes me about 400 rounds to sink each car in that mission and when I'm done, I'm usually driving a piece of **** on shot tyres and in the time it takes to grab a new car and catch up to Lance, he's dead!

Stuff and nonsense! It's going to my head! And I'm going to bed now - to hell with this!

A bug annoyed me yesterday. I was developing one of my business buildings, and you know that wall they put around it when it's in construction. There was a car parked in front of the building, so that wall crossed it right in the middle.

Smart as I am I got into the car to try and take it out of there. Unfortunately it wouldn't move at all, it was stuck there. Then I hit the triangle button to leave the car and guess what? He can't get out of it.

The worse is I had done a few missions before that and I had to turn off the game without saving it... :(

Finished all the storyline missions, and took over all 30 buildings - the attacks keep coming. :( 👎

I've noticed that attacks seem to be related to when you've recently taken over businesses, in that particular game session. If you take over businesses, save your game and reload, the attacks seem to stop!

It's really damn annoying when you take over a business from the Sharks, and then you have to drive around with them constantly chasing you in their SUVs and shooting the living daylights out of you. It's just not fun when you're riding around looking for unique stunts or whatever and all of a sudden a truck full of gun-toting maniacs rams you and loads 400 rounds into you in a few seconds.

KM.

I agree. I REALLY hope that there is something game related you can do to make them stop once and for all, otherwise this will drop down the xx out of 10 rating of the game a couple of places as far as i'm concerned. Gamefaqs hasn't been much help so far although i ahven't had a proper look. :(

Here was an interesting glitch I had..

I was delivering a car to viceport with a 3 star wanted level, I blew through a police car roadblock right outside the pay n spray in viceport and then delivered the car. I then got another car and cleared my wanted level at the pay n spray. The 2 police cars for the road block were still there. No big deal... I left and kept playing for about 2 more hours... I saved several times but did not reload as well as crossed over between islands several times... each time I came back to vice port, the 2 police cars were still there.. I tried and was unable to get into either one of them??? I then blew them up with a couple of grenades...

I was very surprised that the cars stayed there that long after several island reloads and saves and then found they were not enterable..

I've had a similar thing happen. Had my property across the road from the hospital at Ocean beach (?), right beside the last bridge) attacked by the Sharks, went and did heaps of other things around the city and came back i think hours later numerous times and one of the Sharks' 4x4's was still sitting, unoccupied, in the middle of the intersection.

I got a messages about my business in Vice Point being attacked, so I went there, killed the Sharks that were attacking and braced myself for the usual wave of attacks.

Their SUV spawned a distance away, drove towards me and then made a turn into another street before getting to the business. They then drove south, across the southern bridge to the West Island, drove up the road, crossed over by Starfish Island and made their way back towards me, only to do the same AGAIN. Just doing big stupid loops of both islands without attacking me. I could watch their red marker on the map and trace its route.

I also had a few occasions where the game would, all of a sudden, start to go REAL SLOW. Like a few frames a second. It once went on for a minute or two, only to just pop back to normal for no reason.

KM.

I've had that framerate drop thingy happen quite a bit, mainly during missions for buildings you own. Incredibly annoying, especially as street lights etc just appear when right in front of you.

Thankfully though the attacks do stop when you turn off the game and turn it back on, i shouldn't have any more attacks now as i own all 30 buildings. I haven't even seen any bikers or Sharks since which is great. :)

I was doing paramedic today but once I finished level 10 my PS2 decided to hang itself :grumpy: :banghead:

Started playing the game yesterday and it's nice to be back in VC.
