How fast are they turning, and how big are the cylinders?

At 11,000 rpm according to the Santa Pod website.

Can use up to 500ci V8s, which is just over 8 litres. So, err, big cylinders. I have seen somewhere a 3l V-twin, can't remember where though and I have looked for it, but to no avail.

Scroll down to Super Twin Top Fuel

The turbo ones don't sound right, either.

A couple friends and I just got jumped tonight and I'm thinking I came out with a broken nose. Anybody know the best way to treat it? I might head to the ER or something tomorrow...
There's nothing can be done with a broken nose apart from regular pain relief, anti-inflammatories and ice in the short term. If it's been bleeding and hasn't stopped (which I assume it has) or restarts, then take a trip to your local ER. Otherwise i'd really not bother. Once it's healed, if there's problems with the shape etc then you can get it surgically repaired but they'll not do anything straight away unless it's very obviously and seriously bent or it's causing you major problems with breathing. Expect it to hurt. A lot. And there will be a lot of bruising.

Sorry, but this says otherwise.

The Evo series and anything with a Boxer 4 will be along to agree with you presently.

Only M3's I've heard were autocrossers and touring car racers, all of which had more intake noise than anything else. Haven't run into one on the street with modified exhaust, and I'm not sure I've been around the E30 even then. All the others were 6's.

Never seen an Evo in person here, but I've heard a couple of Subarus that were pretty nice-sounding.

***acknowledges suggested contributions and then ignores them to stand firm***

Nevertheless, speaking generally, and with a very few exceptions as noted, 6 or more holes still makes a better sound.

I've never heard ANYTHING that sounded as good as the IMSA Jaguar V-12 of the late '80s. The motor that won Daytona and LeMans in 1988. I was at Daytona that year, and several years subsequent to that.

Perhaps I'm biased, having had one, but in my view, the exhaust note of an Impreza is by far the best of all the fours. Note that I say exhaust note. It seems to be trying to rent the air itself asunder, and it's a lovely sound.

I did once hear the induction howl of an original Integra Type-R as it went from idle to the redline, and that was pretty special.

The radiator and water system carries away combustion heat, the rich fuel charge resists compression heat.

Alcohol also does quite nicely. Will be experimenting with the stuff at the end of the month when the guy from the states comes in. Might just allow me to run crazy ignition advance on my car. Might do nothing. In which case, it goes on my diesel truck to help it pass emissions.

just like to ask.., in car terms, what does JDM and OEM mean??

Original Equipment Manufacturer - meaning to say that you're rich and can afford to buy "original" accessories and parts for your car.

Japan Domestic Market - meaning to say you've scoured the internet for the pieces to rebuild your car the way it's sold in Japan, which, to the fanboys, is always better than the way it's sold elsewhere.

Both matter a lot to people building their cars to a certain look or spec, but for those of us who like the "clean look" and try to put the best parts on our cars, not necessarily the branded ones, it means very little.

You need at least 6 cylinders to have a nice sounding exhaust. Except on a motorcycle. A 4-cylinder car owner should just give up and leave the stock mufflers on, for everybody's sake.

I actually like 6 cylinder exhaust notes better than any 4-cylinder, but there are some 4s that sound great. Boxers are generally good... others? Depends on the cylinder firing order and the header design. Header design makes or breaks an inline four's exhaust note.

I'm not expecting to get my phone back. Should insurance cover the fender that one of the guys kicked in?

The best salve for a broken nose is breaking the nose of the git who did it. And insurance should cover it... but I'm not so sure if they have a clause about not covering vandalism. Depends on your policy, I guess.

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market. Meaning, parts and cars available, sometimes exclusively, in the Japanese market.

oh i see..,

OEM = Original equipment manufacturer. If I'm not mistaken, that means original parts from the original manufacturer. In car terms: Not-aftermarket.

so, it's when you are a Mitsubishi owner, and you buy parts from Ralli-Art?? is that it??

is that a Caterham Seven Fireblade?? :D

woooow..,

i've got more, but that'll do just for now.

more!! please..., :)

I own an MX-5. I would only buy genuine Mazda HT leads for it as aftermarket ones are crap. The Mazda ones are OEM. The aftermarket ones are not OEM.

If someone owns a Honda and buys Spoon things for it, Spoon is a tuning company just like Ralli-Art. They specialise in the marque they make parts for but are not OEM. Same with Nismo for Nissan.

Nismo and Ralliart parts are OEM since they are just subsidiaries of the parent companies Nissan and Mitsubishi. ;) Spoon is a tuning company though 👍

And Mugen is Honda's in-house OEM branch, right?

And Mugen is Honda's in-house OEM branch, right?

Not really. Mugen was started by the Honda founder's son and is closely linked to Honda, but they are not owned by Honda as such. They are as close to being a OEM branch as you are going to get as an independent though.

OK, this may seem like a really stupid question or an equally stupid joke, but I swear it's not.

Can eating habanero peppers make your crotch and butt cheeks burn? Because, I ate almost a whole habanero, and 20 minutes later, after the fire in my mouth had subsided, erm, those... areas... started feeling like they were on fire.

I had also taken a shower during the 20 minutes, but I doubt that the water was hot enough to burn me--it was normal temperature, and even if it was, I should have gotten burned in more places.

It had no contact with your blood, right? Or, if you touched the pepper, then those areas-

This is why it is not a good idea to urinate conventionally after handling hot peppers or oils.

Is it possible for an airliner to come within one-tenth of Mach 1, or exceed the speed of sound? I was a passenger on one that allegedly reached 739mph at 29 000ft., according to the data tracker on the seat backs.

The Concorde went faster than the speed of sound. As for a regular Boeing or something, I kind of doubt that it could go faster than the speed of sound. Maybe in a nose dive, but not just cruising. Then again, I am not a pilot, so this is only what I think. I could be very wrong!

739mph air speed or ground speed?

Maybe the oil washed off onto it when I was taking a shower?

My posterior is fine now, but my crotch feels like it's on fire. However, urinating does not hurt.

Lotion hasn't helped, but running my .. erm, penis.. under cool water makes it feel fine.. until I take it out.

At least you had a seat! This poor soul had to sit in the bathroom for part of the flight!

So it turns out it wasn't broken. And we would have broken all their noses if there weren't twice as many of them, all bigger than us.

And it looks like insurance should cover it, but we were at an event that could make my premiums go up if the company knew about it, so I'm not totally sure we'll use insurance, but it could be pretty pricey so we may have to.

Ground speed a definite probably. Airspeed a probably not.

The reason they call those high-altitude wind bands jet streams is because, um, jets fly in them to get a tailwind. As much as 100 miles per hour!

And it doesn't count as over Mach 1 because it wasn't airspeed, so the airframe was not subjected to sonic or supersonic stress.

If the displayed speed was gps-derived, then it's a good indication of riding the jet stream.

I really should've paid more attention to that Mythbusters episode but, what's better in terms of saving gas?

Windows down and A/C off?
Windows up and A/C on?

Problem is I'd rather do windows down and A/C off because I need all 90hp on board...

they did the myth several times because people thought they did it wrong.

It really depends on the car and the aerodynamics of it. With the Blazer I got far better mileage with the windows up and the A/C on then with the windows down.

Blazers don't really have aerodynamics. I wouldn't think that windows would have that much an effect.

Then you thought wrong. I drove one from almost 5 years, I throughly tested my hypothesis. With the windows down air blew into the cabin and damed up against the oddly shaped rear hatch causing quite a bit of drag.

Huh. Never would nave guessed. Good job testing it thoroughly. Wait, did you use the scientific method?
