Getting a PS3 this weekend 9/26/08. Time for some questions.

You need to rent Planet Earth and Ratatouie.
100% agree with that

Also, check out the Pirates films, probably some of the best non-animated content you can watch.
+1, but also add in Spiderman 3. The 'birth' of Sandman part alone is classic demo material for high-def; in fact the entire disc is superb for showing off HD audio and video, which is why its such a common demo disc in Home Cinema demo rooms.

I would also recommend Blade Runner as well, it shows exactly what can be done with an old film, the opening section is jaw-dropping.

Simpsons movie is also good demo material.
Again agree.

I would also recommend

Black Hawk Down
Kingdom of Heaven
300 (deliberately grainy but stunningly sharp)
Blood Diamond
Shoot 'em up
3:10 to yuma

and without a doubt

Batman Begins, particularly as it has the opening scene from The Dark Knight taken straight from the IMAX master.

Regards

Scaff

I agree with Blade Runner, it's a great film that was transferred to Blu-Ray. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is another such film.

** If you do get Planet Earth get the one narrated by David Attenborough, he's much better then Sigourney Weaver.

Prob out of this topic, but for me ultimate BLURAY movie would be Das Boot.. too bad I don't see it out yet :(

CAMAROBOY69, try Warhawk if you like FPS games(32 players at a time online).

Small Correction, WH isn't a FPS (First-Person Shooter), more like a TPS (Third Person Shooter)

From,
Chris.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and comments.
Ratatouille is on my list for sure of blu ray movies to watch. Batman Begins is also on our list of movies to get.
I liked that movie a lot and want to see it in blu-ray for sure. I watched Open Season last night and it looked pretty good but nothing like Cars. Uncharted is VERY good. Played through quite a few levels of this game. The stunning graphics, puzzle solving, and smooth gameplay make it the best one I have played on the PS3 up to this point.
Played at least 5 or 6 levels of Lair and its a very fun game but I hate that 6 axis controller. Unfortuanatly I cant download the updated that allows you to just use the controller. I am at the level where you fly through a valley at night with tons of lights.
Played through several levels of Resistance. I cant get online to do the multiplayer or the co-op so it seems like an ok game for a launch title. I feel I am not able to get the full feel of the game. Resistance truly reminds me a lot of PREY without the ability to walk on walls and ceilings.
Its frustrating that it kicks my entire router offline. Never had that happen with the PC or the 360.

I cant download anything because I get kicked offline from the PS3 every time I get on. I actually cant even play the PS3 unless I disconnect my internet cable. It will just keep saying there is an update, the update gets to about 2% then it disconnects. After that I reset the router and it just keeps doing this over and over again. So I keep the cable out that way I can at least play the single player part of the games.

I was never underwhelmed with mine at all, I thought it was great even when I bought it which was ages ago and there were like no AAA titles out yet.
Same here. In fact, I took it home, set it up online and then downloaded the free GTHD. I didn't pay for any games for at least two weeks. I setup my home network with it and started streaming videos and using to to take all the videos off my PC and play them on my TV.

But I was aware I was buying geek tech more than just a gaming machine.

It all depends on what you were expecting from the system. There are people on these boards that would say the same thing about the 360 or Wii.
When I bought my Wii I was completely amazed at how much fun it was.....then I bought a PS3.

Edit: Is it common for the PS network to disconnect once in a while? The PS3 seems to shut our router off or disconnect the router connection.
Are you using a Linksys WRT54G wireless router? If so this tells you how to fix that stuff.

If not maybe some of the same settings changes on your router will help.

I actually suggest the whole Spiderman trilogy. While Spiderman 3 looks best it is a pain to sit through just for the eye candy.

I also like Live Free or Die Hard.

We also have a couple of Harry Potter movies but there was nothing amazing about them, just a clear picture.

and without a doubt

Batman Begins, particularly as it has the opening scene from The Dark Knight taken straight from the IMAX master.
Definitely.

Yes I do have the Linksys WRT54G. It is perfect for the 360 and I have had NO problems on the 360 with it.
I really didnt want to have to mess with the ports on the router since it already works perfect for the 360. I only want to get online with it. I guess I will save this info if I decide to play online again. I could always try it with the 4th port since I hardly use that one unless I am playing a PC game online while my gf has her PC online.

I upgraded to WiFi because my wired connection stopped working all together I may never go backed to wired with my WiFi hook. Moving the PS3 to another room is also great having wifi. But you really need to update your system :) There are many new features in it. You can also do it via PC and flash card/ USB key.

Friday night it was working perfect and it downloaded all the updates for the PS3 and for GTp5. Even playing online was flawless. I just dont know what happened saturday to create so many problems for new game updates or playing online. :dunce:

There is some weird conflict with just that router model and the PS3. Both Sony and Cisco refuse to accept that it is their system and customer support from either one will tell you to contact the other.

Although, they may have updated the firmware on the router and fixed it since I last looked.

Anyway, setting up the PS3 with a DMZ should not affect your 360. Or giving them both a setup like that could even make your 360 run a bit better.

Anyway, it is an oddity with that model of router only. It would be a minimal issue, but I believe that is the most popular wireless router in the US.

Media Server.

Did you disable it yet?

Watched Batman Begins in blu-ray and played another 2 hours of Resistance. I must be getting very close to the end in that game. I will keep the first post updated with all the PS3 games and blu-ray movies I watch.

How many hours of Resistance did you play. It is pretty long game, but not LONG. But I was always saying, I am getting CLOSE yet another level show up.. trust me it will take you few more hours.

I remember my PS3 on Standard TV, and I thought resistance was pretty neat looking, then I got myself FULL HD TV and Resistance just look so much better and more detail for far away objects. AHH :) I need to replay the game before Resistance 2 Special Edition comes out!

Once you get Little Big Planet you will not wanna sell or return the PS3. So I hope you keep it. Oh As well SOCOM if you shooter fan. BEST SHOOTER IN THE WORLD! And Most realistic, I am saying this again, because I was playing again last night and just amazed by it.

I think I just finished the level called "Angel". Tonight I will probably play Lair for a few more hours after we watch Iron Man. Heather bought the regular edition of Iron Man and I will rent the blu ray version after work since I really just dont see myself keeping the PS3 at this point.

I just saw a new PS3 today... I didnt know that the chrome lettering is no longer inset... its printed in this questionable matt sliver colour... also the drive bezel is in matt silver not chrome.

The end of Resistance for me was the level with all the Grey Jacks. I finally got good enough to get past them and then kept dying in the following firefight. A save point between the two would have been awesome.

Since then I have gotten caught up in other games and now a friend is borrowing it.

It is this stuck point that makes me miss the days of cheat codes. In the past I would have gotten tired of trying, loaded up an infinite life or something and gotten to the next save point so I could continue on with the story. If I were better at FPS it wouldn't be an issue, but I'm not.

I really just dont see myself keeping the PS3 at this point.
Let me get this straight. In four days you have done this:
Updated 9/30/08
So far these are the games I have rented.
1. GT5P
2. Heavenly Sword
3. Played the Haze demo
4. Lair
5. Uncharted
6. Resistance
Blu Ray movies I have rented
1. Vantage Point
2. Cars (incredible in Blu-ray)
3. Open Season
4. Batman Begins
Did you finish a single game? I mean, Heavenly Sword is the shortest of the bunch and even it takes more time than that.

I know you are trying to sample everything, but I think you are rushing it and not actually enjoying it. I know that 4 of those 6 games you listed made me feel like I needed a cigarrette and a cuddle after I first played them.

And I really want to suggest some PSN games for you, but if you don't keep the system it will just be a waste.

Anyway, it's your money but when I saw that list I just went, "Wow."

Those are games I have tried out. I am not finished with them in any way. I am just checking out different ones then the ones I like the most I will re-rent and play through as far as possible. I plan on putting a lot more time into Lair tonight. I really want to try to finish all of these games and I have about 4 more weeks to do it. I am enjoying Reistance. It reminds me of a mix between COD3 and PREY. I liked all of the games on that list. Well Haze was kinda disappointing but its only a demo plus I wasnt able to try it as a co-op.
I like Heavenly Sword a lot but I got stuck on the guy with the swords that are like feathers on his back. That was a very fun game. Sucked that I got stuck on the 2nd main blade of the game. I tried 3 times to beat that guy and ended up dying each time.
This weekend I will try to rent MGS4. I know that will consume a lot of time and I will try to commit at least an entire day to it without distractions.
I guess I could list my current progress on each game in the first post to help people realize how far I am or how much effort I put into each one. Just not sure if thats necessary.
Like I said I will try to get as far as possible in each game on my list.

Actually, this is a good explanation. Every time you said you rented another game I was thinking that you had taken the last one back and I was just thinking, "Good God, man, get past the tutorial at least!"

With MGS4 you need to devote time, and at least get to Act 3 before making your decision on that one. Although, I believe that Act 4 will be the one to make you decide it is the most awesomest thing since awesome was invented.

Guess I dont have to worry about watching Iron Man in blu-ray. All their copies are defective at all the blockbuster stores. Oh well we can watch the regular version Heather bought.

Um, those should have been recalled. If your local store failed to return them and get their replacements bad on them. As of last week Paramount had said that release would go as planned.

And it seems they will work on a PS3 anyway.
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/blogs/team_HCC/iron-man+is+blu
Paramount Home Entertainment has recalled early shipments of the US Blu-ray edition of Iron Man, following reports that the disc locks up certain players. The disc is due to go on sale on September 30, but some web retailers have already received stock and shipped them to customers. We've had a copy at HCC for a couple of days now, and can confirm that the disc locked up while loading on a Samsung BD-P1000 and Pioneer LX-70A. However, it worked fine on a PlayStation3 and Yamaha BD-S2900.

The company claims that the authoring problem causing this only affects certain discs, but has put a full recall into effect, with US distributors being given directions to send back all product. It also promises that replacement discs will be shipped to retailers in time to meet the release date. Hopefully, this speedy turnaround means that the UK won't suffer a similar problem when Iron Man hits Blu-ray over here on October 27.

I updated the first post with Spider-man 3 in blu-ray. Hopefully by the end of the week I can watch Iron Man in blu-ray.

I had trouble finding Iron Man in stock last night. I guess I will get it next week.

Probably because of the blu-ray Iron Man recall that we were discussing yesterday. I watched the regular version last night that Heather bought.

Or it was just that popular. Paramount initially looked at delaying the release a week, but then managed to reproduce enough good ones to say that the rollout would happen as originally planned.

If I had to guess, judging by the buzz on HD forums, this was just a popular item. I know in the stores I went to they already had SKUs posted and an empty shelf space that was the same size as any other new BD release. Sold out big titles in BD is not a new thing.

It's most likely a combination though. All the DVDs were fine and so they put out what BDs they had, but not the full amount they originally intended. Just enough to meet preorders or something.

All this because some guy clicked the wrong option as default in the audio setup.

I believe that too. I absolutely love Iron Man. We saw it a few times in the theater and thats something I never do for movies. Its just that good. Then we bought the regular version yesterday and plan on renting the blu-ray version as soon as its available. I also found a hidden easter egg by accident. First time I ever found an easter egg in a movie. Iron Man is easily my favorite Marvel movie. 👍

I gave up on Lair for now. I am at the level where you fly around all the spot lights at night and have to shoot the huge power lines through the entire level. I tried for an hour and a half at least 5 times using that 6 axis controller and just cant get through it. Since I cant update the PS3 I am forced to use the 6 axis which is very frustrating at times. I will re-rent it some other time and just try to hook the PS3 directly to the modem so I can get the update. I like the game a lot I just hate using the controller.

With that said I rented Metal Gear Solid 4 and played for 2 hours straight. :) So far its been a pretty good game and I like how the cinemas arent really long but there are quite a few of them as you play through the levels. I havent skipped any of them yet. I just got past the part where you get to use the mortar to blow up the tank. Then after some exploration around the same level for a while, I found where I had to climb under the car to progress to the next level.
I will add MGS4 to the list in the first post.

Take every other game back and tell your girlfriend to go out of town for a week. You have entered the MGS zone, where nothing else matters. You will be at school/work and you will be struggling to figure out what is going on. You'll think back to where you went one way and not another and wonder if you missed anything important.

And you are still in Act 1, which I felt was a good step into the game, but in comparison to everything else, possibly my least favorite part.

So, did the graphics impress? I am amazed every time I am playing and notice things like each individual hair being moved by the wind or my octocamo activating.

I thought the MGS graphics looked pretty good but they really didnt wow me like I expected. Some of the graphics in Lair seemed better. Especially the character animation. Some of the people in Lair looked very real during the cinemas. But I have only played 2 hours of MGS4 so I am sure the graphics will kick up a notch. I do like how the camo change but at times it feels clunky. As I get used to the controls and the game I am sure it will get better.
