But the number is spelled googol, not google, and is indeed 10^100.

How that gets the distinction of being the "biggest" number is unclear to me.

Probably because someone hasn't bothered to name the number for 10^101... lol

I hereby name it "Archibald."

So shall it be written, so shall it be done. :sly:

Arnt numbers a constant? I understand that infinity doesn't count as a number, but if someone started counting with the intention to get to the highest number would they ever stop?

All that comes to my mind from that is an Iron Maiden line. :sly: :p

You see I found it out from my maths teacher (in year 9)

So just this last week?

It is, I assumed, widely known that Google was a rather large number. I believe the term is the result of a father asking his son about how big something was, and his answer was that.

Of course, I've been wrong before, but I'd figured I'd put enough into this thread to merit its existence.

I think.

Did you know that the search engine google is named after the biggest number? Google (the number) has 100 zeros in it.

Yes, I also thought it was common knowledge what a googol is. It is not the largest number. Googol +1 is actually the largest number.

So shall it be written, so shall it be done. :sly:

Metallica

What?

Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston and Yul Brenner. Good grief.

Pfft... Never seen that Heston guy live nor have I heard that Ten Commandments album, but I bet Hetfield has better stage presence and Master Of Puppets sounds better.

How wrong you are! Education time.

Of course Google is named after a googol but a googolplex is 10 to the power 10^ 100.

And before we go into meta-mathematics here let's not forget that numbers are (citation needed) potentially infinite. (Arrrgghhhh....the philosopher in me is growing stronger.......must suppress!)

The largest number known to man is Graham's number and of that only the end has been discovered. Here's a sample of the known largest number:

Wikipedia
the observable universe is far too small to contain an ordinary digital representation of Graham's number

lolwut

It's a number so big it's impossible to write it

I hear if you was to write a number on each atom in the near universe, you'd run out of atoms before you ran out of numbers.

It is actually the largest known number to be used in a mathematical proof.
So people saying "Oh, just add 1 and you get a bigger number" are wrong.

No, I think you'll find Graham's number is the largest discovered. Unless you're a complete moron or have some kind of magic mathematical ability that has outdone Graham, my statement stands to be corrected.

There is another number that is infinite in size(put to paper that is)and that is pi...There is no end to the numbers right of the decimal point...

But surely, if Pi is infinite, then the surface of every area is infinite too?

Food for thought.

Don't ask me to explain, if you don't get it it's not my problem. Consult your brain.

pi is a real number...You don't need the space to write it down anywhere because you couldn't even if there was enough surface area...
Look it up...The numbers to pi ARE infinite!

You misunderstood my point completely!!

Pi is a reoccurring number. True. Not arguing that fact.

If you imagine that Pi is infinite, as you stated, and every surface can be measured, then the surface of every area must, by all logic, be infinite? Right?

"Oh, but my table is square!" You're thinking?

How many circles fit into a square, until it's completely crammed? An infinite amount, that's how many. And if the equation of a circle is Pi, and therefore infinite, so must be any measurable area. :)

And how do you know it is infinite? Have you tried to count it? No. Infinity must be measurable to be able to be infinite therefore can only exist as a concept.

I really wasn't going to explain this one because my theories always get me trapped in these heated debates about 'stuff'.

If you don't get it, carry on your normal life. If you do, and would like to debate............er, don't ask me because I'm going to bed. ;)

You can put forward any concept you wish to any mathematician worth his salt and he will shoot down every one of them...I stand by my statement as FACT...
