How would you rate Gran Turismo 5

It recieves a 40 out of 100 from me. And that's only thanks to the lovely and detailed premium cars, weather effects, physics, modifications and some of the track selection. The rest is either astonishingly bad or clumsy.

For me, out of 100 I would give it 50. For me so far the only leap over GT4 is in the graphics, there is no incentive in the A-Spec races to use a crappy car like in GT4 where you could earn more points. There is no real challenge, this levelling business is ******** and tedious, B-Spec is a complete waste (should be optional like in GT4) and that's only the stuff I can roll off when i'm half asleep at 1am.

Oh yeh, I forgot, maybe the biggest disappointment is the cars, maybe it's just me but I don't really care for the amount of Japanese cars in the game. I realise it was inevitable but how many frigging Honda's/Mitsubishi's etc do you really need????

To me, the game as it is now is what GT5 Prologue should have been, it's feels botched in oh so many ways and should have been sold at half price from day 1.

Even so, i'm still playing it. Odd that.

Even so, i'm still playing it. Odd that.
For me, that is the bottom line.

So far, I like this game a lot more than some, but I also have many complaints of my own. From the Premium/Standard cars to the whole auto paint system, I find so many damn things in the game either ridiculous, incomplete, or unrefined.

The ride(game) I just got off of was Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty 4 before that. I used to be into Gran Turismo, but I nearly lost complete interest after GT4, and GT5p, I played it just few times.

After coming off couple of excellent first-person shooters, I honestly thought the racing game was going to be a complete bore. Still, I gave GT5 a chance, out of loyalty to to the series(was on the Gran Turismo bandwagon before Day 1). The game is quite fun to play, thanks largely to the physics everyone seems to be pleased with. And while I don't find it nowhere near addicting as MW2 or CoD4, I don't feel that I miss that type of action either. I have yet to really get into online, so I won't submit my grade yet, but with so many things I don't like about GT5, I also find that there are many features I do appreciate, or feel that we take for granted. The grade for me is around 70~80 right now. IMO, it is quite a departure from GT1~4 in a sense that, this is the first time I got less than I expected from a full Gran Turismo game. Also, for my grading of this game, I will take in consideration how long Polyphony Digital took to release this game. Some might find that irrelevant, but I do.

I'm sorry I'm all over the place. Damn Family Guy rerun!

*bump*

Looks like the poll got way buried. If you haven't voted, please do!

8.5 but i said 90. Its still GT at its finest just needs some fixes like.....

-Tires randomly change to lowest set, ie back to soft comfort when i have racing slicks equipped on the car before.
-Rims on all cars! And more Racing mods for cars!
-GTO/Monaro looks like crap and some other standard cars look horrid.
-Gear ratios and brake upgrades are gone. :grumpy:
-Superchargers on a '10 Camaro for example should add 200hp, not 50hp or whatever it is.
-cant turbo ALOT of cars, but i guess they want the game to not have hundreds of 1000hp cars, i get that.
-B-spec drivers cant handle FR, MR cars AT ALL. The AI needs to be a bit better, they get too freaked out too easy.

Overall the game is solid, just feels like it wasn't completely finished. Still enjoying it and this forum so i really cant complain too much. :)

PS. jabofu i agree with what you said, and love the avatar. :)

I am level 27 A Spec 13 B spec at the time I wrote this:

Mostly because it feels like I am playing Gran Turismo 4 again with better graphics.

The Good:
1. Premium Cars look amazing
2. Tracks are very well done with bumps / elevation changes etc
3. Weather (on the few tracks its on) is done very well
4. Physics engine is the best I have ever played on a console.
5. Course maker is pretty fun. (tho a bit to limited)
6. All cars feel unique and have different handling characteristics

The Bad:
1. A lot of graphical bugs
2. Some standard cars look terrible.
3. Menu design terrible
4. Online Play not what is promised on the back of the box. - no matchmaking, leader boards or rewards for playing
5. Leveling system should be removed - not enough events to get to the next level. Either add events or increase exp so I don't have to grind one race over and over to unlock new events.
6. Why have lisenses if you don't need them for anything?
7. Special events especially Top Gear could have been so much better....
8. No test track
9. Less Turing options than previous GT games.
10. Weather / Night races on very few tracks
11. Requiring a level 24 car for a level 23 event??
12. AI seems worse than previous GT games
13. No mechanical damage
14. Cosmetic damage very limited on every car I have played, crashing 30 times at 150 MPH does nothing more than make the bumper loose on 1 side.
15. Only 17 of 1000+ cars can be race modified?
16. Bspec races should not be twice as long as A spec. (cut the money in half instead) + more than 4 commands is needed........ just feels like your not really doing anything but watching a terrible drivers replay for 25mins
17. Only 16 cars max racing at once??

Id give it a 75/100. It's good, but it's really lacking in areas. It's really not even a sim. I just finished a race where I nailed a wall head on doing over 170mph, stopped on a dime, turned around a few times, and went on my way.

This is an arcade racer with some tuning options, and very limited tuning options at that, especially compared to Forza 3 which lets you tweak every last thing in the car.

It's hard to understand how they've been working on the game this long, but have it fail in so many areas compared to the competition. I get a strong feeling they were distracted by GTHD, Prologue and the PSP game. There is no way im playing 5 years of work here.

I want to get back into racing, been out of it for a few days because of a fiction project, but I wanted to make a quick post about my score.

I was going to give it a 90, but I had to agree with the description on that, and that GT5 was just a wee bit shy of that because of several bizarre issues with the game. So what I would give it in its present shape is an 88. A few patches, and then the score would go up over 90.

Hmm you are right, i didnt think of alot of that but you are right. I wanted the test track back, and the top gear races are REALLY hard. I could just suck but that wasnt really fun to do. Still havent won. :ouch: As for the cars being only 16 im acually happy, with more it would be a mess with all the weird AI. Like i said before it feels like it was ALMOST finished, reason why they tried to delay it, AND have said they will have alot of updates. I do like the fact its harder to get money this time around compared to GT4, but atleast have better cars to win after races that arnt worth crap or cant be sold at all. I remember GT2 i would win the speed 12 and keep selling it for half a mill. Those were the days. :dopey:

It's difficult to rate because I have two very different view points.

Half of me, as a car lover and racing fan, can see past all the glitches and shortcomings and give GT5 a perfect 10. The physics model is spot on, the cars feel great and the tracks (albeit not all tracks) are perfect. Lapping the Nordschleife in the GT-R, LFA or 458 (they're my best 3 cars so far) is about as good as it gets.

The other half of me is incredibly frustrated by the gimicky addons, graphical glitches and blindingly obvious ommissions (i.e. descent AI, in depth tuning options etc...) and couldn't give it more than a 6. That sounds harsh, I know, but the game has moved on and GT is struggling to keep pace with Forza and some PC sims in several aspects.

Splitting the difference would yield an 8 out of 10, but for me the driving experience more than makes up for the shortcomings so I give it a 9, even though I have to plug through the above mentioned shortcomings to get to the core of the game.

Based on the posted meanings of the scoring, I would put it right at 75.
Since they said they will be releasing updates this month, I went ahead and gave it the 80 in anticipation of some of the problems being addressed.

*bump*

I'm getting closer to voting myself, but I haven't spent much time racing online. Been on there just handful of times.

Any new voters? So far, majority of gtplanet has voted 70~80. Personally, I'm feeling mid-70's, but more time online could push it up higher.

After a month of playtime I voted 70. However in the first 3-4 days I would have gave the game a rating of 50 or less. There are too many things I'm not happy with, after all this time:

- Lack of tracks. I seriously expected at least 40+ tracks and 70 completely different variations (without resorting to tricks such as including virtually identical versions like La Sarthe 2005 or subsections of full base tracks, like variations of Cape Ring) excluding reverse ones
- Time and weather changes only on very few, selected tracks
- Physics are a nice improvement over past games, but could be better in many areas
- Car setup settings, telemetry and technical info no more detailed than what was in past games
- Car tuning/parts sort of expanded, but still too simple/simplicistic
- Certain nuances (car-specific features, an "automatic mode" for automatic gearboxes, tuned engine behavior, etc) are not simulated.
- Customization rather limited, especially for Standard cars
- No official support for G25/G27 wheels yet
- Online is in, but it looks like a "limited beta"
- Lack of events! GT4 had many more despite having less cars
- Still regarding events, some tracks have not been used at all. So in A-spec mode it's all about driving on the same few ones over and over again.
- Car sounds could be more rich in detail and depth.
- Poorly thought interface. Confusing and slow.
- Standard cars. The errors in their technical data, specifications and behavior have been carried over from GT4 and GTPSP. They're mostly a cut&paste job. They're limited in game functionality and customization. Many of them look awful.
- Lack of proper mechanical damage. What has been included in one of the latest patches is still not satisfactory in my opinion. It's canned damage, not much realistic, although it prevents reckless driving. Also it isn't permanent.
- [...]

I'd rank it somewhere between 75 and 85. 75 at launch, but it'll probably be an 85 by the time the patches are done.

pros: driving physics for low powered cars, weather, rally (albeit poorly executed), the ferrari F10, night racing, photo travel, the course randomiser and the jaguar XJ13

cons: red bull X1/X2010 (it's surrealistic and I suspect it will eventually ruin online), standard cars, limited customisation, having the only two liscensed can-am/group 7 cars that I know of in video games being standard cars, lack of leaderboards, lack of a performance index of any sort (FM3 did this really well, if only it weren't for the boost in PI that AWD cars get, but that wouldn't be a problem in GT), the painting system (I love that they have flat and chrome colors, but I shouldn't have to exploit various glitches to paint multiple cars in those colors) and various other glitches (I'm looking at you, paint/car duplication)

70.

I'da probably rated it higher 3 or 4 years ago. But 5 years on from GT 4 and with the bucketfuls of hype, I was certainly expecting something better than this.

GT5 is, in many ways, a step backwards from earlier iterations in the series.

I was being generous and gave it a 9. I think they did a wonderful job making it look amazing, fantastic night/rain racing, premium cars look good, and the driving characteristics are amazing.

BUT, they haven't fixed what's been broken with it in my mind. When you give a Muscle Car a race exhaust it sounds like a Nissan and plenty of other cars sound off. Also, the limitations with the standard cars are stupid. Paint shop is a bit stupid and the wheel selection needs improvement.

90/100, the things that I dont like is the jagged shadows that I find a little annoying sometimes when the rest of the game looks so good, also they could have included more premium cars and better sound on some of them... otherwise... I love everything about it ^^

After my time with it I'd give it a 70. It's a GOOD game but this is Gran Turismo. I was expecting an exceptional game. After GT4 I really thought the sky was going to be the limit for the next game. As the years went on I couldn't stop thinking about how unbelievable GT5 was going to be. Now that it's finally here and I've been playing it for weeks on end.. ehhhh, it's good which pains me to say because I wish I could be going head over heals for this game.

-lack of tracks. Mind blowing that a PSP GT game would get a better track lineup that the PS3 version. Where are all the tracks?? Bring them back! How about more real life tracks! Spa, Silverstone, Donington, Road America...

-lack of A-Spec events. This is fixed a bit with the new online seasonal events so I can't be too harsh about this but still, it's all too limiting. I want an event generator. I want to be able to create a race or series of races being able to pick my own competition, track, number of laps w/ a cash/exp payout that would vary depending on difficulty level. I'd give ANYTHING for this & it would bump my score up to an 80 for GT5!

-Damage is weird & not consistent. It's enabled in practice & online but not in A-Spec. That sucks.

-Hard to blame PD too much for this but the graphics beyond the premium cars are barely passable. The choppy shadows, ugly jaggy effect through smoke, bad quality upscaled PS2 standard cars.. when it's all taken together it's a complete mess. Maybe things could have been improved with less cars on the track? Lesser quality on the premium cars? I don't know. The PS3 just isn't up to the task.

-Bad load times/bad front end. The load times are quite bad & the menu is laid out in a weird way. If I'm on one end of the menu I have to tap the "mouse" pointer all over the place to get to another place on the menu that I want to go. It's laid out like we should be using a mouse but.. we're not. It's style over user friendliness.

-GEAR RATIOS! Why can't we change them now? The real driving simulator, the one that used to let us do this has now taken it away. This doesn't make any sense at all.

Beyond my gripes, the game has sucked me in just like all past GT games have. The physics are great, I've had a BLAST driving the cars and once I got over my grumpiness about all of the inconsistencies and issues I have against the game I can still say I enjoy playing the heck out of it. It's good but could have been so much better. Here's hoping PD continues to support the game through the next year & maybe gives us some surprises.
👍

At the 1 month mark, I would say 75/100. The physics are great and the actual driving in the game is a lot of fun, but everything else is disappointment. A-spec is too short, B-spec is too boring, online is a joke, car customization is a joke, premium/standard divide is ugly, the special events are interesting, but some of them are frustrating with a DS3, licenses are pointless (they barely give any XP), the track list is way too short.

Sorry but I had to give it 70 for obvious reasons.

80 at most.

Physics seem great to me, I hate that I cant change wheels on a non premium car. Seems stupid.
The whole experience to me seemed like I was expecting more then what I was getting for 5 years of waiting.

Sound - I cant believe still sounds as freaking bad as it still does. It's as if they said screw sound.

Why can I only paint a car whatever color I've unlocked and then only how many times I've "unlocked" that color?

Tons of other little stupid things that stand out that I can't understand why you wouldn't give the choice to the end user.
Then why did you give it 0/100? ...

When the game was first released, 70/100. After update v1.05, 80/100, which is what I voted for. Give the game a few more months to a year, and it'll be 90/100, because the game is improving in each update. However, I don't think the game will ever become flawless, though (being 100/100 or A+).

30 people think its flawless!? Have they played other racing games?

I gave it 80.

Poor customisation. No body kits. No rims for standard cars. Can't adjust rim size. No livery editor.

Standard cars look awful.

Online is missing obvious things. No qualifying?!

A-spec is poor. Two weeks of challenges and that's it. Where are the manufacturers events?

Graphical standards with blocky shadows is inexcusable.

Was expecting so many more new tracks. Instead, we lost the classics from GT4.

Overall, the game is good. But its merely a small stepping stone towards GT6.

Anyone awarding it 100 is just... Well. Silly.

I agree with all of that. At least when I rented Forza 3 at a friend's house there were plenty of races to keep me busy. I could've gone a month without even touching the surface of how many races they had. GT5 needs moar races NOW!

9.0 at launch

9.5 now

27 unique tracks is not enough?

What I want out of GT5 varies greatly from others it seems. My only big gripe is the terrible XP/credits system

I'll give it an 80 at v 1.05.

It's fun and has a fair bit of slick stuff, but it's far from perfect. I believe it has the potential to get a 90 from me after some more patching (advanced wheel/FFB options, advanced cockpit view options, cockpit/bonnet view for standards, saving in championships and endurance races, adjustable gear ratios). May reach ninety-something with added/upgraded content (more events, more real world tracks, premium cars). There's no hope for going much above 90 unless they do a lot of redesign and bring the simulator aspect closer, nay, up to or past the state of art - I guess they'll have a shot at that with GT6.

I gave it 70, mostly because of your words.
Not a fan of B-Spec, but find myself spending 3x more time b-specing than driving because driving irritates me.
Classic GT, it's either over in 5 laps or I run the risk of losing, which means I have to do it again. - not a problem for anything fairly short, but for a 2,3,4,5,9, 24 hour race? No, I don't want to have to do it again.
Hell I'm still pissed that to complete the game I have to personally drive 24 hours.
This equipment is to *** expensive to run the kinds of risk such as running it for 5 days in a row.

Give it an 80 out of 100 because I am happy with it, even though its not the perfect GT it still has a lot of features to play on. :)
