Actually 80% of the year is public, almost any day you can just rock up and race. They hardly ever close the track off completely even if people are testing. Only time they close it to public is for racers or if a car company pays a hell of a lot. Think about how much money they are losing (its like 8 euro a lap per car) if its closed to everyone so BMW can test their M3 CSL. They wouldnt unless BMW, MB, Audi etc. were paying them more than they make normally/.

Well, not not really, although you can drive the Norschleife on several days per week,
you can do that for only a few hours like 3 pm to 7 pm or sometimes only 1, 5 hours a day... the rest is reservated for the companies I said.... are you serious about the money ??? The ring is never full of cars as a national highway or so, do you really think DaimlerChrysler, BMW, Nissan, Toyota & Co. give anything about loosing a few thousand dollars a day? Do you want to crash a protype into a 18 year old wannbe racer in a 90 hp car ? Sorry but if you take the hours you can enter the track per week you end up with a small amount of time where you can actually enter with your private car, like 20 % as I said, also consider winter ( track closed most of time)....

The track is not open for public every day, just every once and a while... 80 % of the year car, tire and suspensionmakers from all over the world need the track, not to forget reservated track days for private club meetings, car magazine tests and of course several racing events...
Those professional drivers have of course less accidents compared to private drivers, although I don't know special figures about that...
the ring is open almost everyday from spring to autumm when there is no event.
you can see the opening times here: http://213.239.207.198/nuerburgring.de/106.0.html
its open 27 days in april alone...although from monday till friday it is only open in the evenings.

most car companys, tyre companys or tuners test their stuff during the regular tourist drives, because it is far too expensive to rent the whole track just to test a car...

edit: now i see you have already mentioned it...but it is open almost every day, even if it is only in the evening. :D

and the car companys do test a lot during the public hours, you can see test mules quite often...

Crap, now I`ll have to go run on that track to see for myself. I assume it`s written in Deutsch. Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch. To any fluent or native German speakers, sorry if that makes no sense. :odd:
that sentence is perfectly fine. 👍

i fear they won't photograph the whole thing again.

i have looked for the jorund saim one yesterday, but i could not find it, at least not at pflanzgarten.

in fact the nurb is one of the tracks with the biggest death toll. i think i heard over 200 from jeremy clarkson off of top gear
The official death toll is about 260 but they only count the people that die on the scene, at least 1 person dies a week because of this circuit, mainly bikers on oil slicks etc.

Anyway , grafiti are not only about 24hr car race.
Each august the 'ring hosts the Run-am-ring and the Rad-am-ring : they held running , nordic-walking and in-line skating events . Even a 24hr bycicle race .
I supose some of the grafiti are dedicated to bikers.
And I think that even a professional cycling event took place on the 'ring : in fact ,i remember i saw a grafiti dedicated to Marco Pantani (winner of Tour de France and Giro d'Italia ).

how many people die each year trying to spell nordschleife?

ps, the ring isnt for drifting ya fool.
you can see the bmw m5 ring taxi drifting a little sometimes and when the track is wet there is a lot of sideways action. :)

Can anyone explain to me why there are weird looking cross things everywhere on the side of the road with number "154" on them? I see them every 10 seconds either somewhere on the left or right. It just confuses me.

Actually that is all about the 24h Race of Nürburgring : Fans express their love to certain car makers and the racing teams.
There is no grafiti in the rest of the year...
Oh yes there is! (Ive put some there myself) although admitedly not as much as during the 24hr de Renen

40 accidents in a year? sorry, but you would be closer with 40 a week...

everyday the ring is open for public, there are several accidents. you can see wrecks and tow-trucks usually every day, police and ambulance are regular visitors on the nordschleife (i have a picture of a huge fire truck going through the carousel on the inside...).

most of the accidents are not severe, although there are about 20 deaths a year and lots of injuries...
the official toll is less than 20 though, because they only count those who died right on the spot. those who die on their way to the hospital or in the hospital are not counted.

due to the high number of accidents a lot is tried to make the ring safer lately, because if it got worse the ring would be closed forever...

Read my post again. I said OVER, meaning there are more than 40 accidents a year. Don't start crap saying I just said 40 a year. I said over 40 a year.

People on this forum need to read.

Yes, but usually when wet or snowing, its adviced not to go out on the 'Ring.

There is a picture of Sabine drifting one of the M5 Ring Taxis.

I know, it just makes the picture more intersting and driving it more fun. I dont do it much, i promise.

i have not seen any sign with "154" on it yet...

do you mean those blue round signs with red crosses on them and a double arrow in the lower blue part? those are traffic signs that prohibit stopping and parking on both sides of the road.
remeber that the ring is a public toll road during the opening hours, so there are those signs, some other warning signs and even some speed limits. peple have actually been fined for driving to fast. ;)

youd think they would make the track safer, when i first took a drive around it i found muhself plummeting off into the guardrail at highspeed due to unpredictable corners. there is little indication of these blind corners, and maybe they should do something about it.

But the fear of dying on every turn is what makes the 'Ring so great. lol
Maybe its what inspired the movie "The Ring"?! lol, you die when you see the ring, and apparently you die when driving on it, lol. 👍

There's a track I'd never run on in RL. You'd have to be crazy.

I'm glad to have it in GT4, where I can mess up, and it doesn't mean life in a wheelchair.

There's definately a reason motorsport has abandoned the 'ring. The track was designed to kill people, and it does. It's a very interesting challenge, but not worth it in RL.

I understand the Opel, Merc, BMW, etc. logos, but why the GIANT Husqvarna logo just before Karussell? I mean, yay chainsaws and all, but what's it doing there? Crazy people.

They make motorbikes too.

At least they used to.

FYI, the graffiti on the track in GT4 does not 100% correspond to the graffiti in the real track. Its a little repeated on places and some of the graffiti does not stay. Its just to add the feel of the Nur.

There is some thing I like to say though. I guess that as you play this game and use really fast cars on the Nur you can get away with doing sub 7min times which is actually quite ridiculous. Its still a game and you can get away with memorising the sequence and speeds for any given car.

In real life, attacking the Nur is bloody hair raising. No amount of training can give you the heroic lap times like in the game. As you sycthe through each daunting corner with its uneven surface and almost blind exits, your car threatens to throw you into the wall at the slightest mistake. Guys here who have been to the Nur should know what I mean. Add to the fact that the game does not take into account things like tyre grip and track temperatures, things should be just a little harder.

What I am saying is that, though we may all be heroes in GT4, I have deep respect for the Nurburgring.

Anyone second my sentiments?

I do.

And I'd like to add: We do not risk our lives in GT4. :D

stephan bellof did 6:15, niki lauda (on the 2km longer version) 6:58. so it is possible with very fast cars.

of course the game allows you to go faster than in reality but 6 minute times are possible, although the 5 minute laps in GT4 are a little bit too fast. ;)

I know this is a bit off topic but wouldnt it be cool in career mode if you could pick to do a session on the ring with other cars on the ring like in real life or pay a bit extra and have a private session

I would like to pay respects to my B-Spec Bob, who I think must have died innumerable (sp?) times on the 'Ring. Yeah the graffiti gives a great bit of feel to the track, and it's great for help memorising the track. I would love to drive on there when I'm older, more experienced and have a licence (lol). Although not fast. It must be one hell of an experience.
