This is a long post but it covers some topics that should be considered for discussion...
I find it rather shocking that the Poll has so many people not generally interested in devices that are being utilised to benifit the game.
Just dont understand the lack of interest and indeed the sheer doubt from some people that P Digital and indeed Sony know exactly what they are preparing for us. My own personal opinion is that GT5 will be revolutionary as a game which will reflect why it has taken so long to develop.
It is VERY aparent to me Sony see GT5 as their most important ever release and as we know it is their biggest selling franchise. Ask yourself does it not make sense to have new hardware such as "Move / Voice Recognition / Headtracking / 3DTV" all being profiled on the companys most eagely awaited game in the companys history and the possiblity in becoming their best ever selling title?
Past GT Achievements
Do some of you forget that GT in the past also set technical benchmarks?
It didnt just copy other upcoming racing games but introduced new things or took some things further which was designed to support hardware.
Dual Shock / FFB Steering Wheel / H-Shift Support / Photo Mode / Printer Support / 1080i Support
Future Of Gaming
HDTV is becoming the norm. Wii created a new way to play and motion control is one future way games will expand. Stereoscopic 3D is annother and it doesnt matter if people like these or not just yet. It is the way the industry is going in the next few years as they can create new excitment and incorporate the current installed console/hardware userbase developing new entertainment the public will desire and want to experience.
10 Years ago if someone told you grown men/women would be playing with toy guitars, drums and singing in front of a TV. Would people of believed this never mind imagined how that side of gaming has developed into major success? Wii did the same thing it offered a new fun experience and changed games or actually increased the interaction with games. Likewise particulary with 3DTV as the hardware costs reduce and content becomes widespread in various forms more and more will see reason to invest in it. Of course such hardware needs a driving force but the cinema industry is just an example of how one major film with such anticipation can ignite and create a wild fire of interest. Now evey major 3D film is getting it seems good box office returns and people are accustomising to enjoying it.
Some Imagination
I laughed at the above image of the screenshot and ingame "Move" controllers. Yes we have had fun but lets be sensible and consider ways "Move" is likely to be used along with the "PS3 Eye" and how maybe Sony is utilising GT5 as a prime title to incorporate all these new hardware developments.
Menu Navigation / User Interface
Okay so I got thinking, one possible way to utilise motion control but really this doesnt seem that exciting is menus.
However maybe with 3DTV games or indeed GT5 could have super cool 3DTV floating menus. 3D Menus is even part of the 3D Blu Ray specification. So lets assume it is possible to create an interface thats unique. I see this offering a possible end result resembling what "Minority Report" showed almost 10 years ago in movies offering motion control navigation. We wont necessarily see many games soon with 3D menus and of course 3D games on PS3 will likely be few for sometime but motion control can offer many benifits in different ways if developers are creative.
"Move" & "GT5"
These are the described modes for "GT5" photo mode.
Photo Drive (Circuit)
Photo stage (Stage Photo mode only)
Now what about if "Photo mode" enabled with "Move" for making it possible to freely move in 3D around the car. "Move" is more accurate than the six-axis controller with its additional "RGB LEDs" and could provide an accurate way to move around even possibly the garage or showroom within the game. This is an area where I can see a great use of the "Move" hardware to allow people to enjoy their "car porn" more and would totally take "Photo Mode" to a new level. I do not see "Move" being incorporated really as a driving controller.
Head Turner
Late yast year when some details were uploaded to GTs website in Japan it was announced:
Able to track the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)
Look how much moaning is done about FOV in racing games or that the position is too high, too low, too close. Also with GT using decent animinated drivers then of course the real head movements would be mimiced by the virtual driver. Furthermore many of you dont sem to realise the ability to look into oncoming apexs. Multiscreens offfer the ability to see a wider FOV and see upcoming corners. Having the ability to look now into an upcoming corner with headtracking offfers a similar benifit in a simulatiuon aspect. Then to cap this all off if free movement is available in looking not just left right, but in full free 3D that really lets people appreciate the cockpits even more. Isnt this the perfect answer to many cockpit woes and yet again for a console, GT could set a new technical feat.
Really I dont understand how people cannot see this as a major benifit to the series and making the game more enjoyable all for the price of a cheap "PS3 Eye"
I demonstrated this once before but here is an example from a FM3 Triple Screen Configuration @ Sebring 1st Corner.
The "Silver Rectangle" is the fixed normal view a single screen gamer would see.
The "Red Rectangle" is the repositioned view a single screen user would see with headtracking.
Talking In The Garage
Sony already has developed and used "Voice Recognition" for easy navigation in Singstar.
Now lets just assume its possible to use GT5 in the same sense as Singstar as both are examples in offering many hundreds of selections. We are told to expect upto 1000 cars, right?
So is it a possibility GT5 could also use "PS3 Eye" for voice control.
Simply say "Ferrari" and the menu selects "Ferrari". This would really help navigation within the game and much quicker car selections but of course could be used in other ways as well.
3DTV
I am a stong believer in 3DTV and that although it will take a few years to catch on and may not appeal to everyone it will grow rapidly.
Sony are aware they need to sell it to sceptics of the hardware and PS3 is the key link to its early success both in increased game sales for them and PS3 as a 3D Blu Ray player.
Games is probably the best source for 3DTV content to really shine. In games it really can be made to generally make games not just more spectacular with "oooh" "ah" moments but heighten the senses of the player which can only help pull the player into the game. 3DTV could allow a heightened speed sensation, vertigo, realisim in depth draw distance and of course, pop out effects even as simple as rain on the windscreen.
Nvidia 3D Vision is popular and ATI are jumping on the bandwagon too in the PC gaming market so its going to be an increasingly popular way to experience games.
What Better Game For Sony To Use To Highlight 3DTV
Conclusion
Perhaps Im dreaming in all this but technically it all is possible with the hardware that Sony will be promoting.
GT5 and the connections to this new hardware are not being made with nothing happening and these are only my own examples of why GT5 could indeed not only be a good game but technically one that sets completley new benchmark for console gaming.
