You can never leave this thing alone...

This has been such a great one and has won, if I remember correctly more than 50 races until WTCC Macau 2010. And that doesn't count those from BTCC and STCC!

50 race wins doesn't tell enough of the story, it's had over 20 CHAMPIONSHIP titles in it's time.

It was great because it would consistently not finish races. But when it did, It wasnt lower than 3rd. It had only 3 wins.

Doesn't make it one of the greatest of all time though.

Anyway, onwards:
Citroen C4 WRC:
Between 2007 and its final year in 2010 the C4 WRC clocked up 36 WRC rally wins, it was also undefeated on asphalt in the hands of one Sebastien Loeb. It won 3 of a possible 4 manufacturer titles and 4 out of 4 drivers titles. Truly a fast machine at the hands of a fast driver.

Nicola Larini's Alfa-Romeo 155 was pretty good in DTM spec - showed the Germans how to play their own game. Sometimes I wish that the DTM series was still more like it was in the mid 1990s, though...

Idk if it's been posted yet...

591 Horsepower-monster that ended the Lancia-stranglehold on the WRC. First broad-use of four-wheel drive

Probably my favorite race car of all time.

Not sure if this one counts, but I did get to take it out for a spin.

Some really amazing cars mentioned.
I'm going to add a car that never really got its chance.
The proposed Cobra killer

D-Type deserve a mention. That radically new aero moved the whole game on.
Mazda 787B was fantastic for obvious reasons.
Ford GT40. Always been a favourite of mine. The Ford that beat Ferrari. Highly successful, highly historic. Nothing else like it.

The D-Type also was the first race car with disc brakes. As for the GT40, there will never be another car like it because there will never be another manufacturer that will throw a blank check at motorsport like Henry Ford II did.

The 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo's in NASCAR. It won half the races held that year and got Dale Earnhardt a Daytona 500, Jeff Gordon a No Bull 5 Million, allowed Jeff Gordon to tie Richard Petty for most wins in a modern era season & got Jeff Gordon a championship

Woah I never knew that. 👍 Thanks for sharing.

I thought the whole attitude of Ford was legendary after their failed attempt to buy Ferrari. It was like 'We are going to kick their asses at Le mans' lol.
The road legal GT40's were supposed to be very uncomfortable to drive, but still it must be very exiting. I would love to see a replica or kit car, but for the actual thing...

What reason? The rotary engine didn't really inspire all the other teams to adopt a similar design. They won on other peoples misfortune.

The Mazda qualified very low at Le Mans in 1991, 11th or 17th I believe.

The pure presence of the machine gives it the stuff of legends. The thing comes to life, so much character!
It was luck and reliability rather than pure performance that secured it's victory in '91, but it deserved it's success. The muscular stance, rotary pulse, and beautiful charge livery has become engraved in the minds of thousands. The car is nothing short of epic.

Speed, reliability, skill and strategy. On the day the 787B, the drivers and the team had it, and they won, pretty much the same story as every other running of Le Mans!

I´m surprised no one has mentioned the McLaren F1 GTR:

Won Le Mans on it´s first attempt, against things like the Ferrari 333SP, Kremer K8, Courage C34, WR LM94 and Kudzu DG-3 - proper P1 cars. And the Macca wasn´t that heavily modified either. 100kg lighter than the normal F1, but less bhp - "only" 600bhp, due to restrictors.
7 cars was entered in the ´95 Le Mans 24hrs, and 5 finished. 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th overall.

Also the had the lowest winning distance (4055.8km) since the Jaguar D-type in 1956 (4034.9km). Also have to go back to around that time to find another GT based winner.
