Ravenwest are the worst by far(so far), showing absolutely no respect to anyone else on track. I guess it's necessary since we have to have a team that always wins, this is a video game after all. Still, I almost feel sorry for the other AI cars trying to have their own mostly-respectable race when Ravenwest come plowing through by any and all means necessary. I did do a couple street races and the Intel guys were pretty pushy for sure.

So Grid-land is a bit of a rough world(not seeing many "no-contact" awards in my future), but it's still great fun. I might consider bringing along a Flashback or two in case of something just plain ridiculous happening in the future.

I find Ravenwest to be one of the best for racing side by side with. They're very predictable, and only rarely do they punt me, usually because I've left them a massive open door and they've gone for it. It depends a bit on the discipline.

Having a few flashbacks on hand should be considered mandatory for a race of any length, dumb stuff is bound to happen eventually, and it just eliminates a problem that would otherwise spoil the game.

I put it on 2 flashbacks. Enough for that awkward moment when you spin out like a fool leading in the last lap, but not so that you can replay all the time and you don't have to care.

Good.

Not amazing, no massive breakthroughs, but they sound like race cars should sound. I'm quite a fan of the tyre sounds which are not annoying, and range from a nice quiet scrubbing sound through chirpy squirrelling through to full on screaming. Very informative. Nothing that's likely to blow you away, but you're unlikely to be drawn out of the experience by poor sound. I think good sounds do their work largely without the player noticing, and Grid seems to do that well.

The ambient environment sounds are very good though, you'll hear the crowds as you go past, you can hear the announcers over the tannoy when you're in the right places, your pit to car radio starts to crackle and break up as you go through tunnels and radio dead spots. Lots of very nice small touches that add a lot of atmosphere to the game. That's something that I feel is some of the best I've come across in a racing game.
 
I finally put my hands on the game, it's as good as I thought.
I like the handling with the steering wheel, really good. Great selection of cars and tracks, good sounds and very good AI.
Keep making your games like this Codemasters, you are on the right way!
To me, the best racing title on PS3. 👍

I've found it depends very much on the individual driver. I've had nothing but clean racing from Nathan McKane, whereas Arron Westley is extremely aggressive. The cleanest and quickest drivers I have seen so far are the K&N drivers. They're extremely difficult to beat in the upper levels of the Tuner discipline in particular - even with the difficulty set to "very easy" (I can't stand Tuner races).

I'll keep an eye on that. I don't always know which is which when one isn't my rival, but most of the worst stuff I could identify has probably been from Westley. Then again, I think they saw me bad-mouthing them on the internet as they both raced quite clean in the races I just had at Hockenheim(and got my first win :) ).
 
You can tell by the numbers. It's easier to identify them than it is other drivers, since they use big, bold white numbers on a black background. You can always look at the standings, of course, but in the heat of battle, your attention tends to be focused on the road in front of you.

I don't know about the others - there's two more that I haven't met just yet.

Anyway, I think I have figured out how to unlock K&N. Every discipline has three tiers, and every tier has three championships: a short one, a medium one, and a long one. The game specifically tells you that if you meet the team objectives in the medium championship, you will attract the attention of the bigger teams. Winning unlocks Ravenwest, but if you just meet the objectives, then other teams become available, both in that championship and the longer one. For example, I did the Tier 1 medium championship in Open-Wheel with Razer and finished second, which unlocked Monster in all three championships for Tier 1. So to unlock K&N, I reckon that you have to fulfil all of your team objectives in a medium-length championship that K&N race in (usually Tier 2 and Tier 3; I have only ever seen them in Tier 1 Endurance races) without winning the drivers' title.

Yes, it's true. Try calling Sherman when you're going through a tunnel, like the first one in La Trocadero (Paris), or under the train lines in Marina City (Chicago).

It's one of dozens of little touches throughout the game, like the way the crowd get louder after you pull off a pass, or the PA that can be heard in the grandstands, or the jets that fly overhead in formation at the start of a session at COTA.

Those are amazing. When I saw those for the first time I stopped driving for a moment and thought "Wow, that is :censored:ing cool."

I also like the clouds of balloons that get released at the start of some races. It's not just a few balloons, it's hundreds of the little buggers.

The jets fly over at the start of every session, regardless of what that session actually is. And the balloons at Indianapolis just hang in mid-air.

I've also noticed a lot of jumbo jets. Including some in places that I wasn't aware had a large enough airport nearby.
 
I am thinking more and more about buying this. Got some pretty convincing opinions.

How is the online play? Does the server constantly drop, and have crappy voice chat quality like gt6?

The online is fine, but there's not that many people so it's hard to tell. It's unlikely to satisfy whatever online urge you have for that reason alone. I consider the online to be about average, with the advantage of having an actual safety rating on players, but I consider GT6 online to be entirely mediocre.


I suggest you wait for a price drop.

Frankly, you're fishing for excuses not to buy now, which is a sign that you shouldn't. At least not at full price. No doubt in a few months you'll be able to pick up a copy used for half price, or it'll be on special. Get it then. If you've got a halfway decent PC, you're pretty much guaranteed to be able to pick it up for cheap off Steam in the near future.

If you're not sold on the single player alone, you shouldn't buy this game at full price, because it will disappoint you. It's a one trick pony, and the one trick is very, very good.

No offense to the Codies guys, who have doubtless worked hard on every single aspect of the game. I love it. But to describe to another consumer, if you're not into serious single player racing you're highly likely to be disappointed when it isn't what you thought it would be.

Online rooms aren't a big success so far sadly, but buying your own cars and customizing them before you hit the racenet challenges sure gives me my online kick. So @Jimmy_Pop if your main motivation is playing in online rooms like in GT6 follow Imari's advice, but if you feel like the best single player racing experience on console, go out and buy it asap as you're missing out on the fun.

Same here; put speech on 0 yesterday so i won't have to deal with his dry remarks anymore before turn 1. Will miss the reception lady calling me by my name though...

For me the online racing is very good in this game, its just you need to race in the right groups, like all games.

If someone was going to buy a game purely for online, I'd say buy iRacing. Or if they had GT6 already, I'd say just stick with that, because the difference between GT6 online and Grid online is not worth $50.

If you're already working with the assumption that you're going to find a league and get good racing that way, one online game is much the same as another.
 
Weird, i just got an offer from Ravenwest very early in the game. I was in season 8 when they offer me to run in the Tuner discipline and then in the first Grid event, i've got another offer from them lol. Finally a teammate that can keep up

The balloons actually move with the wind... very gently. Most of the airplanes takeoff/land and fly on the correct flight paths in and out of airports.

I also used 'artistic license' for some of them (business jets etc) :)

Dubai and Yas Marina (in drift events) also have parachutes in the background. The hotair balloons also move with the wind direction.

Im on PS3 so no iRacing. As for GT6 it's to dull for me, GRID AS is what im after in a racing game, its RAW and feels alive, unlike GT.

AS racing should be..

Also... if they just went straight up... you wouldn't see them as they'd go out of camera shot very quickly. I do try all these things before settling on the best visual approach. I don't just add stuff and hope it works.

With Sepang circuit being adjacent to Kuala Lumpur Airport, seeing it take off wouldn't necessarily be bad taste.

I like how the PA actually makes sense as well, not just random chat, really cool. Dubai also has a lot of radio interference.

Yes, it would. It would absolutely be in bad taste. It would be the same as having United Airways Flight 93 taking off or landing in Washington DC, or Air France Flight 227 in Paris.

And there's the music. I was doing the first Grand Slam race in Okutama, and you can hear snatches of music from the crowd as you go over the dam.
