GT Academy 2012 announced

Toronado
That. No sarcasm intended whatsoever.

I didn't think so, just making sure. Was that contest you mentioned open to anyone as well? Or like GT Academy, restricted to certain countries? Obviously being Canadian I can't officially take part, but I'd like to download it and run the events anyway. Would that be possible?

I want to say it was country-restricted as well, but it was so long ago (started in the middle December of 09 and spilled over to the end of January) that I honestly cannot remember.

I remember it being restricted to wheel players.

Nah not really, the guys on a pad had a terrible time with the throttle if I remember correctly.
Hopes were high though because the physics were better than prologue. Well according to some. I found it to be quite slippy.
I remember the download not being that big and a bit of a stir over some poor graphics. Oh and sound too. Well it's GTplanet after all.

I remember 2 trials I think? Not sure now.

I remember two, both on Indy road, both in 370Z's one stock, one tuned. I participated in that event, but I'm not sure if it was restricted or not.

The trial for the stock car forced you to use driver aids, if I remember correctly, and the tuned car trial banned the use of aids.

I know only America and Europe will have the GT academy, but will the pack be downloadable to everyone. I hope so.

I'm wondering that myself.. Guess will find out soon enough.

I finished 32nd overall in the USA using a pad. :)

I got a wheel with a couple days left in the contest and couldn't improve my time.

That's damn good. Hope you improve next time around!

That was just in the 2010 time trial competition for the Indy 500 package. ;)

Last year I did a little better than that. And if I can do it again this year, I'll give it everything I've got. :)

Typical BACWARDS PD logic.

GT Academy: To find the best GT players from around the world.

Then dont you think the BEST (or those in contention) already OWN GT?

I dont even think were getting anything new, its basically a Time Trial seasonal that i have to quit GT5 to participate in, and will be made obsolete oce the comp is over.

IF we WERE getting anything new it would be added on to GT as dlc, but i doubt it, why would they put out a new track or car only playable in a standalone?

If they wanted to appeal to a new audience, why not release a small demo as opposed to alienating new fans by having set hot laps and having GT vets humiliate them.

This GTAc2012 does not make sense, or there is much more to it.

But i doubt it.

I am sorry, but you got it backwards. PD is looking for driving talent. Not the best GT5 player. In order to get the most talented drivers it is a very good idea to make the competion as accessable as possible.

I don't think we should expect any new content (cars or tracks) for GT5. I think the most exciting thing for Kaz and PD is to expand on the Gran Turismo brand.

GT5 is what it is. No DLC will change that. The GT Academy is simply a great way to expand on the Gran Turismo name and a great platform for potential race drivers who haven't any idea what they are capable of.

Um, no. Its not the best driver, its the best GT5 players getting a chance to drive.
My pops is a great driver but a CRAP GT5 player, i am mediocre at both but i can smoke him any day in GT, because i play the game.

They want the best GT players, to develop into race drivers.

You might already be a race driver, but if you suck at GT(somehow) , you will not advance.

PD may be looking for driving talent outside GT5 but in the end the fastest GT5 drivers will win the competition, I highly doubt that someone that hasn't already got GT5 would have the commitment to play a racing game to the extent that it takes to get into the top 250 in there region let alone win the competition. I think you are probably right about PD's intentions but I doubt it will be won by a newbie.

Yeah, impossible.

Interview with Lucas O.
Q. How did you first get involved with GT Academy?
LO: “I was with some friends and we were looking through a motor sport magazine and I saw an advert from PlayStation and Nissan for GT Academy. I have always been a big motor sport fan and had a little bit of racing experience. I thought if I can train myself to be quick on Gran Turismo then I might have a chance.
“I already had a PS3, but I went straight out to buy a steering wheel and pedals for it as I thought that this would help. I was really determined and I put in lots of hours of practice and developing my skills on the Gran Turismo game. I ended up being the second fastest in Spain and racing in the national finals and I won my place at Silverstone. There I was, driving the Nissan GT-R and the 350 Z at Silverstone…amazing!

;) Ok, maybe he had the game already but not having a wheel qualifies him as a "newbie" (as you described) pretty much at that point.

L.O might have been a newbie in GT, but not in motorsport, i think his bro is a pro driver and LO himself had track experience , but he still had to get good at the game to even have a chance to showcase his IRL skills.

Being good at GT does not mean you will be good IRL and vice versa, but the first few rounds will test GT skills, once proven, then you get a shot IRL.

So as important as IRL skills are , you NEED GT skills to even get a foot in the door.

I'm surprised they keep pumping money into this, but are unable to make something fun and creative in the seasonals.

Seasonals have zero visibility in terms of marketing and publicity - they're essentially a throw-away feature.

Sorry if this has been posted previously (couldn't see it anywhere in this thread) but I've seen some pictures on the GT website.

One of the photos on that page shows off the menu layout and what the first event of the first round will be....

That's right, taking a corner in a Nissan Leaf. The leaderboard for this will be ridiculously close up the top if it really is just one corner... The other pics are of High Speed Ring, London, SSR5 & Tokyo.

EDIT: Triangle=Showroom? I'm going to guess we get to pick the colour of our leaf?

EDIT #2: Cheers R1600Turbo. I must have missed the news story on it all together .

Yes and promoting the real driving (not racing) simulator and nissan, is probably more important now than any updates, DLC or seasonals sadly.

I'm even doubting i will take part in "the academy", all i want is to enjoy the game itself, and not be the fastest through one corner with a nissan leaf competing with tenthousands of kids that want that best time.

That means days of dedication, and not even getting in the top 1000.
Why bother.

I assume that is for the European finalists? Because I have word from my sources that the USA finalists are indeed able to compete again this year.

Great, the academy winners get to race in the Dubai 24Hrs, but won't let people from the UAE enter the competition. :grumpy:

Kids? I find that hard to believe due to the rules of the contest ;)
