Hi all,it's my first post in here.im thinking in buying the game, firstly does it play ok with the controller as I don't have a wheel setup.many thanks

It works absolutely brilliant with the controller using motion control, check the “you have to try motion control” thread in this forum.

If you prefer steering with the analogue stick that works as well but I moved on beyond that. Motion control works that good, it’s like a wheel without a fixed mount, without pedals and no FFB but works great once you get the hang of it, allows much more precise steering.

No it doesn't. It's all over the place when you need to do some corrections and was supposed to be fixed in 1.03 but it's still bad.
GT6 and GTS closed beta were much better with controller.

The biggest thing for me with the controller is throttle modulation. I used to love old GT games because you could control the throttle with the pressure sensitive x button. You can't do that with this one, but once I got used to the triggers, i have no complaints. I think it the steering is great with the sticks as well. Not having a wheel is no reason to not buy.

Unless its been fixed since the open beta, Driving with a controller is crap, Drifting is nigh impossible and the brakes feel like milkbottle tops.

I play with a ds4, and i have no issues. I am not crazy fast but am doing low 1.44s on kyoto. Some people seem to be having a realy hard time with it though (not sure why tbh) i have been racing with a controller for 25 years so maybe i am just really used to it. The motion control was to wierd for me with no fixed mount, perhaps more time would have changed that, only did a couple on arcade. I also use stick grip/extensions wich i don't see anyone else mention. I know they are mainly for shooters and such but i find they help me steer more smoothly.

Edit: i am not a drifter so my opinion does not apply there, i am however able to catch and manipulate small to moderate slids in a race setting

Ok lads mixed view then?

This is my first jump back into GT since GT5 and the controller has been fine. I’m competitive at 142.xxx and against A/S rated drivers. There is a limit to a controller at some point over wheel setup but it certainly doesn’t stop you being competive 99% Of the time.

Learning cars / tracks is way more important than what device you are using so I say buy it, providing you’re aware of all the issues

DS4 is perfect, everything in Gold and several wins online....works well....
motion steering good, but no close so fast like with the sticks

I'm doing OK with it so far. All Golds on the tutorial part of the campaign, and I'm just working my way through the mission challenges and circuit experience at the moment. All gold on those so far as well.

I did find drifting very difficult when I briefly tried it, but I was using the Mustang, so perhaps not the best car to start out with.

I played GT5 and GT6 with the G25, and was certain I'd NEVER play a GT game again without a wheel. Now, however, I'm racing with DS4 and I love it. The countersteering problem has been addressed with the 1.03 patch, but might need a bit of further tweaking to be a proper fix.

After buying Project Cars on the PS4 and trying to race with the pad .. Gran Turismo Sport is heaven :D

Basically, if you're not planning on reverse entry drifting everywhere then you'll be 100% fine with the controller ;)

The overall feel of it is not as good as something like Forza Motorsport but it's still very good.

I would say it's fine. I can't know how much better would it be with a Racing wheel, as i don't have one.

I drive with x (accel.) and □ (brakes)!

Fyi, the face buttons on the ds4 are not pressure sensitive like past PlayStations, so your gas and brake are on/off switches if you use them. This is the first GT that I've driven with the triggers because of that. Modulating your throttle is important to be smooth and fast.

It's simple really.

It works well upto a certain point, even with or without motion control.

But at some point, if you keep getting faster through setups, track knowledge, and really mastering throttle application then eventually you'll hit a brick wall of where the hardware will take you no further and you'd need a wheel to improve.

I forgot to mention taking off assists too.

But yeah, like all simulation games, racing wheels dominate the upper echelon of the community so if you use a controller you'll have to accept that sometimes you're gonna be matched in those sessions with guys that are not as skilled as you, miss the apex, don't gain time by running wide on exit... yet because they're on a wheel, they're outpacing you.

Personally, I'd say if you get good with a controller with as few assists as possible, you'll be able to outmatch 90-95% of the community and then just leave the session when you come across a top tier wheel user, andthat will outweigh the cost of buying a wheel and chair, and also the pain in the arse of having that setup in your place.

Yeah, it is one of the better racing games out now with a controller. I thought my pedals had potentiometer problems and played with a controller for a bit. Was surprised that my times weren't THAT far off.

honestly the controller is pretty good with the analog sticks. I've been able to work my way to a class but now am having a hard time keeping pace with those I assume have a wheel. It's easier to spin out with a controller as throttle control is harder and combine that with the analog sticks.

But definately no reason to not buy the game, you can map the buttons how you wish.

Ps, Logitech g29 and play seat arrives tomorrow :)

If you press the button more than once in short intervals it makes braking more precise.

It's just...i played all my life racing games that way, so let's say i can feel how much the car brakes on such a situation.

I can't even drive fast with the triggers anymore.

If i use the triggers, i can't even steer the car precisely. (with the analog stick) lol

As is often the case in this forum people equate "I enjoy it" to "its working fine". There is a known issue with controllers and genreally speaking it affects your ability to control the car when you get beyond its normal traction limits. This can affect drifting or simply correcting a mistake when circuit racing. There are threads dedicated to this and I suggest to the OP to do a little research to see if this issue is of any concern to them. I'm on my phone so maybe someone can post a link.

Believe me, i mourned the loss of the x button throttle...but not being able to hold a steady partial throttle was a deal breaker. I didn't want to switch to triggers, but it ultimately took me less time than I would have guessed to get used to it. I had used x and square since GT1.
Similar for turning driving aids off or even going from automatic to manual transmission -- the adjustment is never as long or scary as I think it will be ;)

Me too. :-P

That's true (unfortunately) lol

That's a BIG downside of pressing buttons instead of a trigger.
