You sure thats not speculation, I don't think Sony have released the specs for the PS3.

hmmmm sounds good. release date on play.com is febuary, so maybe thats when the UK gets it. however they state in the description:

from light and competitor car reflections on the player's automobile to leaves on a tree shaking in the wind.

which is really cool, but im sure on the adverts for gt3 they showed that to be in the game, can anyone else back me up?

This morning I left my house at 5:30am and rode my motorcycle (Honda RVF400) for 5 1/2 hours to the Tokyo Motor Show.

As soon as I got there I searched out the GT4 preview area. I was expecting the same set-up from the 2001 Motor Show. Back then it was a bank of maybe 6 stations with big LCD monitors attached to a Recaro seat and Logitech Wheel. But this time they had these Simulator Pods. These things moved up, down, sideways, and tilted according to the steering input. Inside the pod were 3 17" inch flatscreen panels aligned horizontally for a wide screen effect. These were attached to Logitech Steering Wheels, but not the new GT Force Pros (too bad.) Outside the pods were 50" plasmas showing a 3rd person perspective, or track view so that other people could watch your driving skills or lack thereof.

I signed up and got a ticket that told me to come back in about an hour. In that hour I watched a few people drive the Grand Canyon Course. Almost everyone that drove has never heard of braking before a turn. They went straight into the outside wall to drop their speed. Also, on the high-speed corners no one even came close to applying any countersteer so they went all over the place bouncing from the left barrier to the right side and then all over again until they dropped enough speed to negotiate the turn. I made notes not to do this when it came to my turn.

I killed of the rest of the time checking out all the cool cars at the show. Then at 2:20pm I got in the pod and went through the selection process. There were only 2 tracks, Tsukuba Circuit (road) and Grand Canyon (rally). The car choices were all various types of Subaru Imprezas, from the base model to the tuned rally edition. I chose Grand Canyon and the Rally edition Impreza in Blue with all the normal Subaru graphics and stuff. Oh and I chose automatic, 'cuz I've never played with the wheel and didn't know where the shift buttons would be.

After pushing start, i was on the start line. The cool part is the gallery of people, in the game, I mean. Other than that I didn't think the graphics were generations ahead of GT3, but that's 'cuz i was super impressed with the difference between GT2 and GT3. But one thing is for sure, once you get rolling the graphics in the background are simply amazing. If you've drooled at the screenshots, wait 'til you see them in action on a big screen. The coolest part is when you're driving close to the rim of the Grand Canyon. You can totally sense the huge dropoff on the side. There is orange safety netting to keep you on course though, but the view is still sweet.

The other thing I noticed was the countdown clock in the corner. I'm sure this was just for the Motor Show and probably not in the real game. It was set at 3 minutes. So I hammered on the accelerator and waited for the countdown. The Go Signal came and I blasted off the line. I was all over the place, and the track was straight. I finally figured out the steering wheel and lack of traction of the car in the game, and went for it. I was modeartely pleased with my driving, except that the car setup had tons of understeer, making it really difficult to snap out the rear-end to drift through turns, and also there was no hand brake, that I knew of. I finally figured that out too, by lifting off the accelerator and applying massive countersteer before the turn entry. In the turn I blipped the accel to keep the attitude of the car just right. I never got all the hairpins perfect but I did get one perfect, and there were oohs and ahhs from the crowd, the real people watching me, not the ones in the game, sorry. I even started to drift through the high speed turns. I totally missed one hairpin and smashed straight into the wall also. But all told,my time was 2:48. I walked out the pod and there was a line of about 4-5 race queen type girls and some guy applauding and congratulating me, in japanese. These girls were SO hot. He told me that I had the fastest time so far.

I'm not writing this just to brag. I think the competition i was up against was pretty poor, like i mentioned earlier. It was just awesome playing GT4, and when every one gets their hands on it next January, you can shoot for 2:48 on Grand Canyon in the Rally-edition Impreza, without ever having seen the track like me today. And subsequently kick my butt.

Oh, also I got the info pamphlet for GT4 Prologue. It has a CAR LIST! I'll type this in some time, if you guys want me to. Also Prologue seems more story based and task oriented kinda like license tests. The real game comes out later than December.

I'll try to post my pics some time as well. sorry the post was so long. any questions, ask me.

Welcome to GTP, synth. Your post made interesting reading. But what's this about the game not being released until after December, you mean the US/EURO version, right? Because just last night I went and put in an advenced order (verbal, no money) for the Japanese version of the game and they said I would have it early December.

thanx for the welcome, chaser. So let me start off by saying that i don't profess to know everything official about GT4, but i have the official GT4 pamphlet printed by PD and Sony from the Tokyo Motor Show in my hand. It says that the scheduled release date for GT4 Prologue is December 4th. It says that Prologue is "driving school type game in which beginners to experts can learn driving techniques. Featured will be FR and MR normal and racing cars in various situations in which to brush up your driving skills." To me this sounds like license tests.

in another part of the pamphlet it has a blurb about the REAL GT4. It says that the release date is 2004. It doesn't say anything about the month. It also says that there are 500+ cars with 50+ tracks. Also that network play is scheduled as well.

In another note it says the new steering wheel is scheduled to be released at the same time as Prologue, Decmber 4th.

Here's the Prologue Car list as well. This has to be pretty official and reliable. There is a side note that says 'these cars are scheduled, actual cars may be different.'

So what cars are you psyched to drive?? see ya. -syn

omgggggggggggggggggg?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! droooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

those two cars will be sick to drive. can't wait to get my hands on a NUR skyline (if we are realistic, it wont be any different to drive, but it'll have a Nur badge at the back, sweet, ;) hehehe)

as for the F1 gtr... omg... can't wait ;)

Mazda Rx-7 Spirit R! SWEET!!! AWESOME!!! W00T!!! I cant wait to drive that car...also, what are the chances of GT4 getting sold out in Hawaii during the first week it comes out? Im not sure if ai should pre-order it...

That team is run by BMW, and although the F1 is a McLaren it has a BMW engine and maybe PD have found a loophole in McLarens existing contracts.

EA have a licence for McLaren, unlike their Ferrari and Porsche licences though it's not exlusive to EA.

AAAaaahhh ok. Cheers Nightmage82 and Live4speed. Great so three of the best licenses are in possesion of one of the worst racing games manufactureres (or IMO they're one of the worst, because they produce stupid racing IMO). So there is a real possibility that PD could get their hands on the McLaren license :D . I know Ferrari is a possibility as EA's contract with them runs out soon, and if we don't have them for GT$, then there's a very good possibiltly we could have them for GT5. What about Porsche. I know we have RUF in GT3 etc. but I'd still love to drive the GT1 and 917!!!! So when does the Porsche license run out?

  It's so annoying! Though, truthfully some games are still pretty cool, noone has the power to beat Polyphony Digital at making racing games, and yet other companies like EA have licenses for cars we can only imagine in GT3 - I mean, How would you like to drive Ferraris around Laguna Seca or even a McLaren F1 in Rome. We could only imagine the possibilities. And one more thing - I've seen many threads about 'making car lists' and yes I know they are ALL FALSE. THAT'S RIGHT. I KNOW THAT is making a great assumption, but as far as I am aware that's the truth. But what about a possible 'track list' - I know there'll be New York and the Grand Canyon, but that's about it, and 4 out of 50 isn't very good. We have thousands of cars in imaginative lists, but surely a good percentage of those will be in the game, let's make it the same for tracks, hmmm?

Oh, and for those of You who are wondering about pre-ordering. If you pre-order, you'll get it when it comes out - and Goodness knows when that'll be. ;) but I imagine, if you wait a few hours, it'll probably have gone platinum (I don't know whether Platinum applies to every country or not but in the UK it does) and it'll be half the price. It's up to you - get it pre-ordered or wait. Having said that, Shops will probably over-order the game anticipating massive demand, and they'll have free ones kicking around for purchase on the release date, but I don't know about Hawaii. Depends how much you want the game, I suppose. My fingers are now hurting after typing all this, so read up!

I'd imagine that the majority of the tracks will be rally ones, which for me it's a personal shame as IMO I don't think GT4 should have rallying and rallying should be left to the specific rally games IMO. I'd be more than happy to see rallying in GT4, only really though if they make proper single car rally courses of A to B and or they do super special stages. Now that would be kool!!!

I doubt they'll make most courses rally tracks, I personally enjoy a bit of rallying here and there in GT3 but generally I don't bother with it as much. The GT series has always focused on the road racing as the title of the game suggests, from what I've heard and read, te majority of the new courses will be based on real one's.

huh? i found my ps2 demo disc 1 yesterday and it had WRC on it. holy macaroni, that is a terrible game. granted u can fall off cliffs and the in-car view is 99% realistic. but the cars handle HORRIBLY. not to mention the misfiring system comes on a random intervals and not when u release the throttle! :odd:

i'm extremely glad gran turismo tries to do rally. clearly it doesn't have the paraphenalia of the co-pilot giving u directions and non-cyclical tracks, but in terms of the way the cars handle, i doubt anything else comes as close to the real thing as gt3 does (and gt4 probably will).

its about time other games caught up or left the scene altogether and handed their licenses over to the public domain.

oh and let's not knock the need for speed series. when it came out it had the status gran turismo has now. it was the BEST. it had the realism, it had the sounds, it had police cars, radar detectors, jumps, crashes, traffic. and it had all the best cars, ferrari, porsche etc. nfs2 was even better (am i the only one who remembers brake balance settings etc in nfs2???), but what went wrong was they decided to make it more arcadey, whilst taking away all the quirks that made it fun in the previous versions (namely the jumps). so lets not say EA makes rubbish games, if they re-did their physics engine they'd come back with something that _could_ leave gran turismo so far in the dust no one would remember what it was called. for now though, polyphony has the edge ;)

👍 Couldn't agree with you more Nightmage8!!! Dearly wish WRC / CMR & the rest of the Driving Games would just obtain the License to SONY's GT Physics engine! Then we could switch "Seamlessly" from one game to the next, taking advantage of the good features from each but having outstanding handling all the while. JMO...UB57
:D

Why, I fail to see the logic behind that.
