GT4 Pits Stop

I saw a pit crew change the tires on a race car like that with the flaps on the back. I don't remember exactly, but they either lifted up from a button inside the car or the pit crew just had to take them off.

You mean they DON'T hover? :(

The panels over the wheels are designed to improve aerodynamics. I'm guessing that most if not all of the panels can be removed to improve pit crew access to every part of the car so if something does go wrong they won't be forced to retire the car.

But this is a Le Mans car, and in the famous 24-Hour race, there is a restriction on the rate of fuel pumped into the car (not sure what but it's fairly slow), so lightning-quick stops aren't exactly a feature of the race, so covering the rear wheels to improve aerodynamics means that the pit crew won't waste time in taking it off because they have a lot of time.

But I have to ask (and I thought this was the actual topic of the thread ...), how do pit stops in GT4 actually work? (If there's already a thread on this, point me in the right direction ad don't bother answering.)

Edit: about 5 people managed to post before I did, so take half of what I've said as a grain of salt if you want.

ya, this is a LeMans or Enduro car, pits stops are not super fast, usually under a minute unless they change drivers. Therefore when this car comes into the pits they take the rear engine cover off to switch tires. Probably takes a little more time than a car with open rear wheels in the pits but i bet it makes up for it on the track. That being said you don't see many LeMans cars with closed rear wheel wells so i guess it doesn't make that much difference as to how long pit stops make. Plus if they loose a tire in the race (blowout) the rear of the car is screwed.

Now in GT4 in a short 2 or 3 lap race with this car I ahve no clue how the AI will quickly change the rear tires. My guess is they don't show the tire change in the rear and you just accept it has changed, sorta like in GT3...the car hovers there....hahaha

most probably :yuck: GT3 pit stop sucks
one other thing, is the pit stop time allways the same?
That would'n be fun, especialy in B-Spec...

Yeah, the cars looked kind of silly floating in the air.

and will the pit crews always do things correctly? WIll they ever spill gas on the road by accident, or tell the driver to take off prematurly w/ out getting a rear wheel put back on?,... probably not :sly: . Will they have realistic restrictions for certian races, like rally? mmmmabey. I wonder if it will be possible to hit the guy holding the stop sign in the pits by accident. or if the Computer will just take over as soon as you pull in... I wouldnt really mind..Im just happy they have a 3d pit crew finally. 👍

Haha, probably not

They should've just "skiped" the pit stops instead of showing a floating car.. 3D finally!

My real concern for pit stops in the enduro's that need them is this...

A person speeds into the pit lane at excessive speeds and makes no attempt to slow down before the speed restriction line, thus they go from 150km/h to 70km/h (or whatever the pit lane limit is) at that line.

I think PD would be better, as GT4 is meant to be more of a simulation, that they programme it so the player actually has to slow down below 70km/h, hit the line and the cmptr control takes them to the 70km/h pit lane limit.

If a person doesn't slow down it should detect the speed at which you hit this speed restriction line and if it was above 70km/h it should impose some kind of penalty, such as a 10 stop and go next lap around or something, and when you come in for that, it's detecting again...

Maybe it will be like some tracks with two lines... one for entering the pit area and one for pit lane. After you cross the first line it will take over control and slow you down to 100kmh or whatever.

Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh! Good idea! Very good idea! But would the penalty work better if you have to come in again (but the computer doesn't take over) on the next lap or maybe the pit crew stuffs up the stop costing you the amount of time in the penalty?

I wonder if pit crews will naturally botch a stop? That would be interesting. I mean, afterall, no team is perfect. Mind you, the CPU car's teams would have to do it as well to be fair. MAybe PD could give us a 1% chance of it happening.

I saw an old Le Mans race with that old Jaguar. The crew lifted the flap up and it fell on the car. After changing the tire, the crewmen pulled the flaps back down over the tire, and bolted it. 👍

Do you race

But would the penalty work better if you have to come in again (but the computer doesn't take over)

Yeah that's what I meant next lap you either have to serve a...

A) 10sec stop and go penalty
b) Drive through penalty

And when you came into the pits to serve it you would have to slow down to under 70km/h before you hit the line... otherwise you have to come back again...

I tried going into the pits at Fuji on GT4P and I could hit the line at whatever speed you wanted and it automatically took you down to the 70km/h pit lane speed limit.

It should be removed and a system like above, and what I previously said should be implemented...

That way in Enduro's (and eventually ONLINE) there is a risk/reward for attacking the line and trying to gain some easy seconds on those who are more conservative.

The most annoying thing about GT3 pitstops was the Laguna Seca pitlane and the way the AI would take control. It has a left-hand 90 degree corner which the computer takes control of, and has a tendency to crash if you are on worn tyres. I have lost a few races at Laguna Seca in this way!

Some of you mentoned the 'jack man' lifting the car. But in some races teh cars have jacks built in. They are pneumatic pegs on the belly of the car that push it up when they get into the pits. I think they use it in BTCC and other touring car events as the cars are a fair bit heavier than the lighweight F1 cars.

Yep, and one time I swerved in there and the car got stuck and it I was almost done with a long race. :indiff:

This is probably correct. It lifts up on the airjacks in GT3 so probably will in GT4. Yeah they do have them in BTCC for sure, I dunno if its just easier and quicker, or more likely its that there is such little ground clearance you probably cant get a jack in there (granted they do on F1 but there are "holes" whereas on a touring car the entire front splitter is essentially on the ground all the time !)

I highly doubt that they'll allow your pitcrew to mess up during a stop. How annoying would that be, you're on lap 40 of a 50-lap enduro, and your crew screws up and takes an extra 30 seconds putting out a fire and getting your car ready to go. You lose first place and have no way of making up those 30 seconds in the remaining ten laps. You just spent an hour and a half for nothing, all because the pit crew messed up. I don't think that would be fun at all.
