This is week 34, and 34 was also the age of Richard Burns, WRC champion in 2001, who died last friday night. (And it's also a special number to me because I'll turn 34 next monday). So I changed my plans, postponed the GT Mode race I was planning for this week and prepared a tribute race instead.
Since Richard Burns drove the #5 Subaru Impreza WRC when he was World Champion in 2001, we'll use that very car this week, on one of the greatest original tracks : the Trial Mountain.

And this will be a tribute to Michael 'Beef' Park too, who died this year on the british rally, and who was also racing for Subaru in 2001 as the co-driver to Markko Martin.

Thats absolutely fantastic of you Flat_out. Richard Burns was my faviroute rally driver and i was absolutely devastated to hear he died.

This is a fantastic tribute, best of luck to all and may the best man win!

R.I.P Richard Burns. This ones for you! :(👍

i really like the look of this one. i raced two OLR events in trial mountain in the last month or so... i hope to get a lift this week...

very nice choice. 👍

i don´t like rally in GT, but in real life, i´m a big rally fan, and i was also sad to hear what happened to burns, so this race is a great tribute indee.
very good one, easy to drive, maybe we will have a crowded week.

As a consequence of this change in the planning, next week (#35) will be a GT mode race, and it'll cost you less than 300,000 Cr to buy the car and the required parts.
And week #36 will be run in GT Mode too since it'll be the NOS race.

Hmmmm..... i salute you and your honour towards two British drivers, all be it one of them was scottish, but hey! Cyril, you have done GTP proud here, and i for one will be trying to fit this into my schedule this week, in a return to WRS fun.

A fantastic idea, phrased brilliantly, with an excellent header foto too.

This shows me what kind of a gentleman you really are, and displays the amount of time, effort and care you take in producing the WRS and maintaining its heritage week after week.

You are truly worthy of following in the footsteps of your predecessors.

 Flat-out!

Hats off to you.

Burnsie was always a favourite of mine to watch, because of his nationality we got more in-car shots with him than most of the other drivers in our tv footage, but i used to love the way that both himself and Marcus Gronholm stared permanently without even thinking about blinking for the duration of the entire stage.

Thats dedication to the sport.

True Homage in the WRS is a joy to see.

Count me in.
:irked:👍

Amen to that.

Great idea, good job flat_out. 👍

I'm gonna be pulling out all the stops for this one, gotta make Richard proud of me from up above.
:(

Holy crap, Richard Burns is dead?! Was it a rally accident? That sucks to hear. :(

Oh how I was waiting for a Trial Mountain race, and now here it is, and I've got no time for it! :( I'll have to not sleep a couple of days maybe :indiff:

Great tribute to a great driver.

He will be sorely missed!

BTW Cyril.....

Which way round the track are we going?

Neil

nice tribute

T1 15.948
T2 35.368
T3 1:02.758

Pretty straightforward except for the T2->T3 part before the big hill. I was going to try and just drift it a bit but then the car just turned sideways and got stuck right near the wall. Wasn't a collision just stayed right there and the speed just dropped to 0 instantly.

No. It was cancer a brain tumor if I remember correctly. He had been battling it for a couple years I believe. I seem to remember he initially fell ill during a rally in '02 or '03????

Fantastic tribute race Cyril! But I wish we weren't having it if you know what I mean. :indiff:

Richard Burns fell ill in 2003 while driving to the Wales Rally (and not during the rally stages themselves). He didn't race in the WRC since.
They are several threads here at GTP in the WRC or Rumble Strip forums concerning his death you can find them with the magnificent 'search' button ;)

@Vexd : kind comment of yours... not vexd for once ;)

@Neil : we're going forward since the reverse track has already been used in week 17.

@jmgyro : the race is indeed pretty straightforward, and no sector can be called a 'hard' one. The difficulty this week will be to stay fast all the way long, and avoid locking the wheels on hard brakings. Especially with super softs on.

From my first session:

T1: 17.555
T2: 38.207
T3: 1'06.129

👍

Absolutely loving it.

T1: 16'670
T2: 36'838
T3: 1'04.411

That was after about 15 laps or so. Top speed at 260kmh, RSS tyres.

Nice tribute Flat-Out! Love the picture as well!
Richard Burns was always my favorite driver...not only to watch but to root for as well! His 2001 WRC season was simply outstanding IMHO! It's a shame all the 'good ones' die early!

Looking forward to giving this combo a run later today.

Peace-

Not a car I have unlocked, but a noble, and touching tribute 👍

I'll see if I have the time to grab the car, otherwise I'll sit this one out.

You are a classy guy, flat-out!

I like this very respectful approach to the loss of an outstanding driver, which the racing world has to mourn!

I hope everybody will at least try to send in a time as a sign to pay tribute to Richard Burns!

Totally Awesome Race, I love Trial Mountian. (I won week my division in 17 👍)

But since it's forwards, does that mean we are allowed to cut the last chicane to get maximum speed across the S/F line? It probably goes against the 'nothing that goes against the spirit of the rules', rule. But it's not actually happening on the hotlap itself, and it won't show up on the replay.

The submitted lap has to be clean.
If you find that cutting through the last chicane on the previous lap gives you a better speed on the straight, and thus makes you save a few tenths, then just do it.
It has been allowed in the past and it is allowed this week too.

OOOOOOOooooo!

Personally, I don't like that idea at all!

Sorry Cyril, I know it's not against the rule ('per se' -edit thanx to Cyril), BUT , it smacks of stacking the deck before dealing a friendly hand of poker just because all your mate's are either getting a beer from the fridge or emptying out!

Just not cricket old bean!

I know you are the boss, AND it is almost impossible to police, but , IMHO it's against the 'spirit' of the rules.

If you have to go off course before the lap starts just to gain that extra few hundredths or a tenth of a second, what else would you do?

And I'm not having a go at casio for posing the question, or anyone else, but clean racing is what the WRS is all about, and I for one will NEVER resort to doing this kind of thing.

Honour and trust are important, here and in life.

Neil

I agree, thats crap, we should have to go round the chicane, as per usual.

I understand your point and fully agree with you but when you have no way to check something, then you have no reason to forbid it.
When we will check replays next week, we will know that people with a start speed above 220 km/h have cut through the chicane. And that's it :indiff: .
BTW, before anybody asks : the concrete slab on the inside in tunnel #1 is NOT part of the track, you have to keep 2 wheels on the rumble strip or on the tarmac.

Best T times seen after 10 laps : 16.8 / 36.7 / 1'04.3
And lots of time to save on each sector.

IMHO...Anything that happens before the timer starts is fair....as the lap starts after you actually cross the start/finish line.....which I'm sure is what Flat-Out meant when he said the 'submitted lap has to be clean'....

Flat-Out, can we get a ruling if this assumption is correct?....scratch that..I just saw your post above... :D

Thx-

PS: After 5 quick laps, I was able to get:

T1: 16.741
T2: 37.713
T3: 1'04.291

@GT_Fan...I'm on your heels mate...better step it up! :dopey:

@Flat-Out....You're Div 2..I'm Div 3..why are our times similar? LOL!

Supersofts are working for me but I'm trying "Hard" next just to see if it may help in drifting around a few of the corners...which *might* help knock some time off...albeit probably only a few thousands of a second considering my driving ability!

In that case, Cyril,

maybe you could ask for an honourable agreement from all not to use it.

The guys and Gals who race here, for the most part, have been here for a while. And as such can be trusted to play fair, anyone with an obviously much quicker lap than their usual performance level (ie average position within their peers) could be asked to verify or be disqualified.

And although it would be impossible to verify everyone's laps (mainly because some don't have a replay device), it would make all of us honour bound to play fair to everyone else.

Neil

EDIT
Nevermind, i'm not gonna get into a semantics session, just take it that I at least will not be using this method to decrease my lap-time.
Each of us has to listen to their conscience, and judge if what they are doing is fair and right!

Neil

I'm with you Neil 100%. It's a slippery slope once you begin to descend. I'm staying on the track before during and after the race. In RL you could possibly do some damage by doing a stunt like that...doubt the sponsers would approve.

Personally I'm using the walls to slingshot around the final hairpin at a breakneck 2,000 mph, at which point I disappear in a pinpoint of finality up my own backside, transmute around the track at an ever compounding speed, before I blink into existence 5 nano-seconds before the starting line, at which point I've completed 6 cleans laps before the timer has actually started.

I hope that's legal.
