GT5 First Impressions

I bought my copy yesterday. Jeeeeehhhhh! I have to say, it is a bit overwhelming at first. So much to do it's unbelievable. First impression is fantastic. I drove a kart race which was very cool. I drove some SuperGT at Indianapolis, bloody hell.

The thing I like most, this is also based on the information we've recieved from GtPlanet users, is that GT5 is a true racing RPG. You have a leveling system, everything becomes available while you level up. For some reason I can't help loving the fact that it is a true japanese game.

A french site reviewed the game and wasn't very over the moon, about the fact it did nothing new to the gameplay. I can see that, but as a true GT-fan I just love that. Doing all those licenses again brings back those old GT feelings.

Graphically it may not be the revolution everybody hoped it would be, but that due to the fact we at GTplanet have hyped this game with totally unrealistic expactations. It's clear that the ps3 isn't capable of producing better graphics. That said, it is the most beautifull racing game to date and no other game will improve on that given the amazing amount of content.

All in all, GT5 is here and we'll be playing this one for a long, long time.

Overall the game is amazing at the moment but their are a couple of things that are annoying.

The Menu's are quite hard to navigate quickly, used car list is just a mass of cars with no way of putting them in order.

Whilst the rain is very good it's also abit unrealistic.. way too much rain gets thrown at you and it's very hard to see where your even going then cars just appear straight infront of you.

I'm obviously going to play it today so I'll see how today goes 👍

Oh yeah, the sound of the cars is simply stunning.

I've played if for a good day or so, and here are my views, both good and bad.

+ At times, it simply is STUNNING
+ Kart racing is fun fun fun!
+ Seems to be months of content to play with and unlock, well be at it forever without seeing it all.
+ Good variety in car makes really, not a problem with 150 Nissans since you don't HAVE to drive all of them
+ A lot of options and feature I'm looking forward to try like 3D and head tracking

- Damage really is awful as it is now. Are they going to patch it?
- Some of the standard cars they should never have brought out, they look like average PS2 cars
- Some tracks seem to have been made in 10 minutes, others in 3 years, why this skew?
- Slightly annoying that we have to play with slow boring cars for so long before we get something with proper horsepower (although this is for some people maybe a positive)
- Menus are not user friendly at all, maybe they are using "standard" GT menu layout (I've not played the previous games), but they really should have been able to make something that works well
- For me, weather effects seems to slow the game down, which is very disappointing

All in all it's an odd mix of extremely good and extremely bad, and I have to say that I think their hunger to put every concievable WOW-feature into the game has made them lose focus on some of the basics in a racing game.

I give it 7/10 for now. I hope some patches will come soon that raise it a notch or hopefully two.

WOW, it’s everything I thought it would be. Today before I got the game I did a remembrance tour of the tracks from GT4 and GT5p that were on the track list and GT5 is breathtakingly beautiful. The graphics are headshaking clear, even on my old TV. The handling is the best of anything I have driven from GT. I have only scratched the surface since it’s 3:30 am in the morning and I am seeing double now so off to GT5 dream land and more reality later today when I wake up.

Just bought the game, been playing for about half hour, first impressions are....DAMN its hard to keep a car on track when going around corners. Everything is so much different, playing with all assists off and the learning curve is going to be very steep by the looks of things. I love the fact that its actually a challenge to keep a 400+ bhp car on track. Previous GT series there was never really any trouble, you could brake, full then continue to full throttle around a bend, but not on GT5, you now have to really be careful how much you accelerate, otherwise you will find yourself spinning.

Graphics are good as expected, but im sort of amazed that it still took PD that long to finish the game. I haven't been on GT mode yet as ive just been messing around with the M3 and just trying to learn the limits of the car. I played with assists and it was alot easier, so im guessing it shouldn't be a problem for people new to the game, but it will certainly take a while to get to grips with assists off.

Some things are great, some just are not.

Let's start with the bads:

- I hate the menu in the GT Mode. It's ugly, and not user-friendly. IMHO the map in GT4 was way better.

- The beginning of the game is boring (too easy), but maybe I bought a too good car (civic Type R '97 - by the way: why was it in the dealerships as a NEW car?!).

- there's no brakes upgrage in the tuning shop, that is you can't buy better discs, pads or whatever. WTF? How the hell that got left out? DLC, quick!

- damage is almost non-existent - head-on collision at large speed causes a little dent in your bumper and has no noticeable mechanical influence. Pushing other cars leaves no scratches or dents at all. After the race your car goes magically back to the undamaged state.

- some tracks look to clean, cold and unrealistic. You get a feeling of cold artificiality.

- cars too are too "clean" and somewhat artificial

- no changing wheels on standard models

- little choice of wheels for premium models (at least for my civic - haven't tried other premium cars yet)

And what's good?
- sounds IMHO
- driving physics
- premium cars look great (apart from the little bit of artificiality factor).
- it's still the best racing game out there

I cant get past the basic information screen when you start up GT Mode!!! its so frustrating!! When i click OK, it dings as it should but the menu stays there and i can still move the cursor. Theres no way that I can see to get off the menu. Anyone got any ideas?

im having the same problem..driving me nuts if you find out let me know

Been playing for 8 hours solid. Overall it is good to have GT back in my life but I am not blown away. First off, I have been playing Prologue for ages in build up to GT5. When I first watched my replay yesterday evening in GT5, I was very disappointed to see that the graphics have got worse since Prologue. I am not kidding, load up Prologue and race around any of the tracks, look how crisp those shadows are on the cars and that heat haze almost looks real. Then go into GT5 and the shadows are dire, you get horrid black artifacts dancing all over your car in the replays ruining any chance of it looking realistic at all. Very poor effort. The night races look awesome though, mainly because you can't see those annoying low res shadows but also the headlight effects are cool. The actual racing feels very good except for the dirt rally stages. I really don't see why GT are trying to make a rally game out of the physics they have. It just feels all wrong so either get it right or stop it, for me it detracts from what GT should be about, tarmac racing! Another gripe, why can't you use Top Gear test track and also the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in Arcade mode? Do you have to complete something to unlock them? If so what? Some of the tracks are a bit flat but I can live with that, including 800 cars that look like they were ported from a PS2 (and some from a PS1) is very poor. Overall I give it 7 out of 10. They really need to fix the shadows issue though as it really ruins watching what used to be amazing replays.

👍 I too completely agree with what you said about prologue, Ive been playing it on the dfgt to get back into the swing of things for release, and I was shocked to see how the graphics had gone backwards...Sounds are far better though imo...eitherway, It is a great game, but not an epic one...yet anyway.

I have to confess, after playing all day yesterday I was a little dissapointed with GT5, don't get me wrong, I am a great fan of PD and what they have done, but when I saw the difference in visuals between Prologue and GT5 I wasn't too happy.

Yes, the phisics are great, the sound is great, but you can't help but feel that the graphics have suffered a little in order to impliment realistic damage and weather, etc.

Up until about 3am this morning I was on the side of no, the trade off wasn't worth it, give me back my prologue graphics and forget about the damage/weather, until......................

I unlocked the Nurburgring Dynamic Weather/Time Change track, bought an Autobacs Garaiya, the video below is what followed, this one lap totally convinced me that PD had chosen the right path, the feeling of that car on that track was increadible !

Then I downloaded my Chrome line cars and took the Shelby for a drive at Le Mans, same changing weather/night day, and this only made me surer that they have done the right thing. :)

Top gear challenge with VW vans is HELL, SO DAMN annoying I can't stand it... Hit a cone and you're out, An opponent drives into you and you're out, and if the opponent doesnt disqualify you it will most certainly spin you around. You can never do the best line of you are just a bit in front of the guy behind you because he will always push you out...

:mad::mad:

Rest feels great so far, haven't done much

whaaaat?? That's freakin nice! I love the attention to detail! what game gives you a present on your birthday!!!!!

I have to say my first impressions are good.

Standard cars don't look as bad as some have said. =P

Here's what I've done so far.

I gave the guy a red suit then bought myself a yellow Silvia S spec Aero '99 for 18,009cr(had about 59k kms on the clock)
B License (which was rather easy) then I did the first of the Nascar special events which I found quite difficult 'cause I'm not used to driving that sort of car.
then on to the sunday cup which was easy (I'd much rather of done my A license I disagree with the licenses being involved with the whole level up thing)
so when I got to level 4 I could do the A license which was also easy
oh and if anyone cares I won a Yaris Eurosport or something like that in the sunday cup.
Can't do my CI license 'til level 6.

Some people have said they won the kart I got mine after my B license so I assume they give you it when you reach level 2.

Anyway I'mma get back to it,28k in the bank and not a single car in the used car lot that I a want and b can get level wise..:ouch: I'll check in again in a few hours.👍 Great game I'm gonna enjoy it some more,Rob.

Excuse my ignorance but are the physics on Arcade mode final? I just tried Arcade and the first A-Spec races and feel the physics are quite dumbed down from the TT. Are there any aids on those that I haven't been able to turn off or what? Will TT physics return as I gain level?

Thanks

Im going to keep it short as I've only played a couple of hours.... I love everything about the game. The new setup and the community features... even the standard cars... There is one thing which I have to gripe about and that is the shadows on standard cars.

While I was doing the license tests and some races the starting animation shows your car. The shadows were HORRENDOUS... I'm talking jaggy, flickering and just looked like a splashing black blotch under the car. I would have expected that after 5 years they would get something simple like that right.

I havent checked Premium cars yet and maybe its better one them. For the rest I love the game and the levelling system... Good add to the game... Have two days off now so I'm going to explore more.

Track maker is also fun! Made a quick track in 5 minutes and then whipped an SLS all over it... Nice!! 👍

Me again,Just a couple of points,It looks like you can buy any car from the start and apparently I could enter my Siggy SLS in the euro hot hatch championship.. gets it done I suppose anything to get to the licenses.

im having the same problem..driving me nuts if you find out let me know

I had this also. I was logged into PSN via Ethernet before loading GT5 and it just stuck at the Basic Info screen. heres how I got it to work:

1) Quit GT5
2) Signed out of PSN
3) Changed network settings to Wireless and tested connection OK
4) Signed back into PSN
5) Loaded GT5
6) It now let me get past the Basic Info screen
7) Quit and changed settings back to Ethernet

Now if you're already on wireless, you might find that disconnecting/reconnecting fron PSN sorts it?

I honestly would rather have about 400 or 500 all premium cars than 220 premium and 800 playstation 2 modeled cars. Almost ruins the experience for me. And some of the tracks look like they were just ported over from the GT4. Upscaled versions of the same low res maps. I am somewhat disappointed to say the least.

anyone tried online?? even if i installed the pacth i didn't successed making a race, it freezes everytime and i have to restart the console, what a shame after all this years waiting for nothing

Take it back then, or sell it. After all, it's just a game that cost a few notes to buy. I could understand if you had paid thousands for it, but you haven't, so all this bickering and whining about stuff we already know is kinda' petty.

Only played for 2 hours but it's great. This game will last me a very long time. Aside from very bad shadows and some 2D plains in the backgrounds it looks amazing. I need to stop reading this board, as I can see it can only dampen my spirits towards the game.

played about 12ish hours so far and the only thing that really gets me down is the maintenance cost for cars in this game.

If you slightly dent your car it easily costs you 30k for a car worth about the same ( alfa 147 gta).

So in order to turn a profit you have to win about 4 or so races and not crash once or get bumped by ai braking for no apparent reason in front of you.

Gues i'll have to get some overpowered car put on all driving aids (when I play with the ps3 controller ) and redo the "best money / minute race" over and over again.. damn grind. Or just train up a b-spec driver and hope he stops trashing my cars as well after a while...

In short I cant wait to get (and I hope there are ) parts of the game where you can actually make some money and don't have to worry about everything being insanely overpriced.

After approx 1 hr play using B Spec driver and observing the graphics, I can cleary say that I'm overly disappointed! The graphics in GT4 are way better and so is the complete layout of features. This game is more suitable for PS2. All the fuss and delays for what?
What a crappy product. And what's the use of the Zoom feature, when doing so it does not make the info on the corners even visible. (to be continued with disappointments, I'm sure)!
