Thank you for this well written spoiler free review. It was interesting to read and you gave very clear examples to explain your conclusions.
I'd like to know a bit more about the graphics: I'm curious if you've seen any jaggies (maybe the proper term is screen tear, I'm not sure about that because English isn't my first language). I ask this because prologue had them a lot, mostly on the edge where one car panel meets the other, both in the menus and while racing. GT5 seems to have thesame sub full hd resolution because, like with prologue, on the box it says it only supports 1080p which is not thesame as full hd.
If you've seen these jaggies then I'd like to know how often and on what kind of tv you've been playing.
What it means is the game is 720p just like 99% of games, and all of TV. It's upscaled to 1080p, which isn't bad. To make GT5 1080p, it would take about 2.5 times the memory, which would be about 100-125 GB's. Just know, all games are 720p unless they are small arcade games. Games like Uncharted 2, Metal Gear 4, God of War 3, or any "big" game from the 360 is 720p at best. Don't worry about this factor. Only things people really do that is true 1080p are movies (Blu-Ray and such...). No one should care that it's not true HD, as it's really impossible this generation from a triple-A title.

I have a question which may be obvious to some. Do standard cars appear in the used dealerships only?

Wow... the amount of wrong here is staggering...

It would take more and faster RAM to sustain 1080p easily on most games with current consoles, not disk space, which you seem to be referring to with the 100-125GB comment. RAM isn't the only limitation, just the most apparent one in the case of the PS3.

Pretty much every single PC game made in the past few years can be played at 1080p (or 1600p if you're hardcore enough to own a monitor that big). It has nothing to do with disk space at all, its all in the graphics card. It makes a huge difference. GT5P was, what, 1280x1080?

Anyone know what the resolution of GT5 actually is?

So, by leveling up, unlocks more cars to view? as in, they aren't in the dealership until you reach a certain level, how do we know which cars are unlocked etc.

Sorry about asking a question, just super curious.

Thank you very much for your insights.
Such great scores from someone who states himself as a bit overly critical is a blast.
Can't wait for the Game to arrive.
Can you share some info on which racing wheels are supported ?
Only the Logi ones or can i expect my Thrustmaster to work too ?

Graphics - 9.0 ?

I just watched 3 videos (+ 1 live stream) of this game, with jittery looking shadows flickering on an off in the interiors of cars, and all over the road. Shadows that look like they were cut with a buzz saw, it looked awful and distracting. Im pretty sure this doesnt deserve a 10 in the graphics department.

I don't get it, are you complaining or agreeing? :p

This is exactly what I'd like to know. Kaz has stated that the game will be in 1080p. I think that's misleading because that usually meant something is full hd instead of 720p. I think many people were tricked by this and lead to believe that GT5 will be full hd.
Now it turns out that the game probably will be half full hd (1920x1080) and half 720p (1280x720) which is 1280x1080, as Wolfracer said in his post.
But we can't be sure because the only official statement we have been given is that it will run in 1080p, which only tells us the horizontal number of pixels and therefore is pretty useless because: suppose the vertical number is 1 (which of course it isnt but to explain the uselessness) then all we can see are horizontal lines. So letting us know that the game will run in 1080p doesnt say anything relevant about the ammount of detail that we can expect. Yet Kaz mentioned it as if it was a big accomplishment.
Therefore I also do not understand why only the horizontal number of lines is displayed on the back of the box. Is that in some way more important then the vertical number? Why not give us both? If anything then I'd say the vertical number is more informative because if it would say 1920 then history tells us that chances are bigger that it actually is in full hd.
What makes it even worse is that we're often mislead in another way:
If only the minimap or the menu is in 1080p for instance but the actual game isnt then they will still put 1080p on the back of the box. This could very well be the case with GT5. So maybe something that TomsonsLLC said is actually true. Maybe the actual game, the cars and the track, will barely run in 720p. I say barely because there might also be textures that are below HD. I read in someone's review that rock walls can look very poor in GT5 for instance.
So what to make of this mess? I think it's disappointing that none of the interviewers ever asked Kaz or Sony about this because resolution is the most objective way to give us information about the graphics of a game but at the moment it is only used to mislead us. They say it will be 1080p. Well, if I buy a 1080p tv and find out that it isnt able to handle full hd images then I would be furious. Thesame holds true here, it's misleading and very disappointing because one of the reasons why I bought a 55 inch full hd tv is because I was lead to believe GT5 will be full hd but it's seems more and more likely that it isn't.

I think we need to hear some 720p versus 1080p gameplay comparisons. Clearly it's sounding like GT5 is going beyond the PS3's capabilities on occasion. Perhaps the 720p experience is more consistent.

9.0 Graphics? Are u sure? Really? I would love to see what you consider a 10 worth graphic...

Did you spent any time into photomode? Try it...

I'm sorry but you can't give GT5 a 10 overall for graphics. If it were only premiums, then absolutely yes, but because 3/4 of the games cars are basically GT4 upped to high res I think a 9 is fair.

Also this whole 720p, 1080p debate has got me wondering whether I should use my 24" 1080p monitor, or my 26" 720p TV. Can't decide, as the pixels will be larger on my TV, but if the monitor doesn't get true 1080p native resolution is ususally best to go for (so the TV). Hmmm.

But Do you rate a game at it's peak or across the board. I agree photomode is excellent. Then there's the standards.
You wouldn't judge a platform game on one outstanding level. You would judge it overall.

That's the sensible thing to do.

Especially when the portion of the driving game that gets the 10 isn't even a portion you drive in...

Thank you for the review 👍.

I think you were a little too tough with the scores, though. Although I haven't played the game and it may sound like an unfair judgment, the gameplay looks much improved, especially the suspensions, which are the best ever in a game IMO. The way the car responds to the driver is amazing. So I'd give a 10 to gameplay, but again, I haven't played the game yet, so I'm probably making unfair judgment.

As for the visuals, I never thought this game would get a score under than 9.5 on any review. Actually I thought 99% of the reviewers would give it a 10. It's the best looking racing game out there, and still you gave it only a 9.0, which means all the other racing games should be worse rated. Forza 3 is the second best looking game in the world and you would give it a... 8.5, maybe? It's underrated IMO.

Just let me ask you this. If the game had only 220 cars, all of them Premium, would you discount the score because of the small number of cars, given that you couldn't do so because of the quality of the Standard cars?

Unfortunately, there are a couple of disappointed owners on the European Playstation forums :(

sweet that's what I wanted to read.
I had a funny feeling with all the video comments from GTP... that things were being glossed over specially with Christhedude stuff ...

I greatly appreciate his videos/comments... but he's looking for a job from SONY/PD (joke). he usually talks about the positive side .... I understand that they are his opinions ... but I was looking for a little balance.

I will still buy the game ... but I don't need all the sugar impressions , A little salt is good also :dopey:

thanks for the link, i agree that there are things to be disappointed about in this game.. it's inevitable due to how long it's been in development

b-spec being bad sounds pretty unfortunate, but then again i never cared to use it in gt4 ever..
the only thing out of his con list that REALLY bugs me are the standard cars, i don't think i'll ever like those haha

still nice to see that physics, damage (hopefully), and ai have been improved.

Thanks for the review! Out of curiosity, how are the dealerships for the standard cars handled? Do they share dealerships with the premium cars?

Apparently according to the guy in the link standard cars are just all housed on one big "USED" car lot... which makes it hard to navigate.

It's interesting to see that guys review... I feel that he is being very honest and what he says seems to jive with a lot of what we have seen...

I wonder how this works into the "don't dismiss what people who have actually played the gamge have to say" rule as this review is not as friendly towards GT as some we have seen...

I can say for certain though that by the review and the responses, it's clear that people around here who think everyone knows about the negative aspects of GT5 and how that info was known months/years ago are off the mark a bit... there is clearly a lot of realization and surprise going on out there... not everyone is as up to date as we around GTP.

Reading that impression from that link, I think I might hold off buying GT5 now; hell, by the sounds of it, I'm not sure I want to waste my hard earned money at all on what seems like a **** game.

Ok, thanks. To be honest, that's ok, because the first thing I'm going to try to do is buy something premium. I feel that everybody used the development time (and granted, the game has been in the cooker for quite a while) to create incredible expectations that are nearly impossible to meet. I think if you go into the game expecting a great GT game, rather than the racing game to end all racing games, you'll enjoy yourself and have a great time.

Unfortunately he also metions that you will not likely be buying a premium very early on (unless it's the civic) as they are all very expensive (only new) and they are license level locked and the ones you can afford early on are apparently not a good value...

Spot some game breakers in there?

Stop bitching already. All the complainers should be happy from all the effort PD has put into making this game. You can never please everyone...

Anyone know if the pad throttle is linear? (or non-linear like Prologue and TT).

Not exactly something I'm looking forward to finding out on Wednesday.

Awesome stuff Dan. I seriously cannot wait until this game comes out. Honestly, I dont really mind about the Standard vs Premium issue, but I'll definitely be buying most the premiums first when I get enough money. Also cannot wait for online play.

BTW, this will be the first GT I buy. Ive played all the other Gran Turismos before, and Ive owned Forza, but I took a liking towards Gran Turismo...

Too bad I have to get a shot on the first day it comes out. Oh the pain....
