I wonder if it was a waste of time to make GT5 in 3D cause they way I see, people really don't care about this feature at all, people won't be willing to spend the extra money for a new TV and set of glasses and not only that, I personally think Sony really forced PD to make GT5 in 3D and to be quite honest with you I think it made the game very bug due to have a 3D mode. am I the only one? I mean the time that they wasted making GT5 in 3D could have gone into making the standard cars better. I still think there is a major glitch with GT5 due to having 3D mode, the pixels on the cars are bad at times.

I personally love 3D and enjoy playing this game in 3D :).

You're saying 3D mode made the game bug due, but you don't know how the game plays if it wouldn't have 3D mode.

Tried it at a demo and was not impressed. Waste of time. People are all enthused about 3D now, 6 months into owning the set the dog would have chewed on the one set of glasses, your fat aunt would have sat on the second pair and the novelty would have totally worn off.

3D is more for casual gamers. Until it is refined, then it will finally become something that hardcore gamers want.

do you guys think the 3D mode is to blame for the pixel glitch on this game? I mean if we were to make a poll I bet you not even 10% of the people that own GT5 plays in 3D mode or have the necessary hardware in order to play it.

Don't have a 3D TV so I can't say whether it's a waste or not.

This exactly, i mean racing games 3d can be a real boon with more depth perception for turns etc But the fact that a very small percentage of people actually own a 3d monitor etc seems like too much time was put into 3d on the face of it for the vast majority to get any real benefit out of it.

Waste of time, no. Waste of money, yes.

All "3D" efforts are a waste of time, if you ask me.

Hope this is a trend that goes away soon.

i got a 3d tv but i have spent the 300 bucks on the 3d coverter box/glasses. according to my dad when you actually find a pair of 3d glasses in store that hasnt run outa batteries 3d tv is extremely impressive. maybe the 3d box will be a christmas gift but im in no rush to go out and get one

to be honest, it gave me a headache... it's cool to try once... i really hope they didn't waste too much time on it...

I play a few games in 3D, black ops, GT5, and it is great fun and looks fantastic, but it's not sumthing I do everytime I play. When I'm just in the mood the have some fun I put 3D and it's great. If I am really trying to win and do well I would never use it.

I created a poll a while back, and more then half the voters didn't want it (although it seems i missed 1 option 'played and didn't like it' in the poll, but either way only 5% said they really loved it)
See the thread here

This reminds me of GT4 when they squeezed in the HD option when relatively few people had HD TV's. Those of us with SD TV's had to watch those headache inducing jittering rolling starts at the beginning of every race.

I remember reading a quote from a game designer saying that it really doesn't take much time/effort to add 3D support to a game relative to the rest of the game. I highly doubt GT5 would look any different if they didn't put the 3D in. It is what it is.

well you say it doesn't take much to add 3D but if I remember correctly the creator himself said that GT5 was made from the ground up in 3D so I am assuming it took along to make it happen and I still think it was a total waste of time and effort that could have gone into other aspects of the game.

Sony paid pd to make gt5. Sony wanted 3d in the game, to complement the 3d range of tv's and the current rage on 3d. I don't think pd had much choice in to be honest. I expect all games that are subsidised by Sony to be 3d, eg killzone 3, uncharted 3 etc.

So PD was working on a 3DTV game 5-6 years ago or whatever the dev cycle was for GT5?

I don't know the intricate details of game design, but adding 3D support to a game can't be terribly complicated. In the end it just involves rendering two out of register images that when viewed on the 3DTV through the glasses produces a 3D effect. That may be simplifying a bit, but I don't think by very much. There's more strain on the processor to produce the two images quickly (and which is why 3D games are 720p max at this point I believe), but that should have no bearing on the non 3D mode.

To actually answer the question posed in the topic, if it actually took them months and months of time and energy to implement 3D, than I'd say it was maybe not a good idea. On the other hand if it didn't take that long to add in, I don't see the harm.

Edit: I can't get access to the exact quote because of my employer blocking websites, but if you do some searching about GT5, 3D, Kaz, there's some quote of him saying something like "because the game was built to run at 60fps, adding 3D support was easy" and that converting a game that runs at 30fps is more difficult.

Of course it was a waste of time. Now it's a flop. Good job Sony 👍

Total waste of time in my opinion, 3D was crap in the 80's, crap in the 90's, and although it been improved, its still crap now.
As ever though, your going to get people who hate it,people who like it and people who are still undecided..

I just don't think PS3 has the potential to run 3D yet nor does GT5 so in my opinion they wasted a lot of time to implement this element into the game. There's no way that a sim racer like us will want to compete online in 3D mode, yes you might want to show off but man, whoever does it, will get so dizzy in doing it so. 3D is made for movies only and a good example of course nothing to compare with GT5 is Avatar but that's about it, PERIOD. 3D isn't good for games at all and very soon 3D TVs will be a thing of the past, we won't be needing glasses to see 3D very soon, watch!

I would like nothing more than to say it really adds to the game, though in truth it just doesn't IMO. I was really looking forward to this feature in GT5 but I really believe it was rushed and should have been patched in later once fully sorted. Here's hoping for that patch real soon, but for now 3D in my house is still mainly for movies only (with the exception of Super Stardust which is awesome :))

people said the same about:

-vinyl records

-photography

-radio

-cinema/television

-air conditioning

-internet

etc.

Don't be a geezer. It's so mind-bogglingly obvious that even if 3D sucks for the average consumer now, its not going to be long before its a new standard, even if its sitting side by side as opposed to replacing 2D.

I would play in 3D, if I had a 3D TV. Maybe when the day comes where you can watch 3D without the glasses. The Tech is being developed as we speak. Maybe need to wait another 2 years. :( But think about how long we waited for GT5, 2 years is nothing!

I won't even consider buying a 3D TV until they have eliminated the need for glasses. TVs are expensive too, and after spending money on a PS3 and GT5, I don't feel like buying a new TV just yet. My 22" LCD computer monitor works just fine for me even though it is a bit small. I'd prefer a 42". One day. Also, I could put money toward a racing wheel instead...
