Even I don't get this whole "Manufacturers NOT allowing full damage to their cars in the game" Crap.. It's ridiculous to be honest, but it's just the way it is, for now..

Although, has anybody thought of this, in an open race set up, wil this mean that the Production cars wont get any damage whereas the race cars will scatter into pieces?? That's just be plain stupid. I am hoping that they have damage alround and not just cosmetic but mechanical, although the cosmetic damage in the production cars will be slightly limited *similar to forza2* but in race cars it'll be like in CMR - DiRT or something..

Dave A
That is actually something Kaz has confirmed himself that will be in GT4. If you check the cockpit and dashboard views thread there's video in there (it's in French) but theres an interview with Kaz and he shows them modelling a Mercedes 300SL interior and confirms that's because you can drive from inside the car.
Is it please possible to post a link to this video?? I dont think I've seen it, but I am interested. If you dont want to do the hardwork of finding it, can u atleast guide me in the direction?
Thanks!

Try running a multi-million dollar business that is constantly the subject of spurious legal actions and you to may end up getting a little sensitive as to how your public image is controlled and managed. I'm not just applying this to the motor industry (but that is an area I have direct experience in), but any industry at all.

So ^^^^ Basically, what you're saying is... If in a MOVIE a car is completely Smashed up (which is a part of the script and has an impact on a Multi-Million dollar movie) that is okay, but in a VIDEO GAME, lol this sounds so funny, I am trying to defend myself over this, but yeah in a VIDEO GAME it is a "Sensitive" matter??

I am not arguing over this. I am sure they have their reasons and probably I am incapable of understanding those reasons, but it just seems unfair to try and BLOCK REALITY, in a game where they're trying to Brag that their game is very realistic... I read your post above and what you are describing as your experience is completely different from what WE as Gamers are trying to say... But because these are - So called Multi Million Dollar businesses, that have a bigger say on these things, we are suffering from what could be one of THE most crucial features in a racing SIM game..

lol, everbody is talking now about those things which are mentioned in the first posts on the first page but what i'm thinking about right now is, will GT5 or even the GT5 prolouge fully support the G25 Wheel. (as in 6speed H pattern and clutch use) 👍

I will break this down really simply for some people, manufacturers don't want their car to be shown as a death trap, whether you think this is a stupid way of looking at things, (just as I do) it is totally irrelavent. There is no point moaning that road cars won't have damage, because it if PD did implement this without permission you could bet they would find them facing a serious fallout, and almost definitely serious legal action. It's that simple, PD can't put damage for road cars if the manufacturers don't play ball.

^(for the above) I would bet that PD will not overlook the G25 steering wheel, I am expecting they will have at least the non-sequencial gears, so we can use the h-pattern shifter, and I think it would be even better if they introduced a clutch. This would have to be optional of course, not everyone will want to go and buy a G25.

Okay a poster over at neogaf posted his.
Actually bought the mag and confirm its true.

just bought JOYPAD and i can confirm this is all-true.
There are four new(but tiny) pics :
-a cockpit view from an Audi TT(Totally photorealistic :embarrassed:)
-a pic from the 300SL (full exterior view)
-another shot from the cockpit of the 300SL (Polyphony artists am God total)
-AND the first shot ever from the nürburing (The trees are really good!)

And sorry my scanner is broken :( .Ii will try to make some tomorrow at work.

And the big news from the article : FULL HD GT4 is not dead!!
-Release date is not determined yet ( but from this article opinion, end of this year )

-750 cars

-50 circuits

-Two versions (same versions as the original plan from last year) :classic and premium
* Online garage
* Career mode
* Online chat
* Spectator mode (à la PGR3)
* Possibility to create Clubs

-Test playground for the future GT5

lol Ive been a member for quite sometime now but I hardly if ever post. Im not a new member guys lol

It makes more sense that it's info about GT5 and a gap filler game, ie a revised GT:HD which I'm not against the idea of provided it's a packaged game and not entirely based on micro-payments.

👍 for that Huntergt.

And the big news from the article : FULL HD GT4 is not dead!!

Let's hope this idea has been sanitized and defanged.

Sorry but I do have to ask if you are naive enough to believe that licening and manufcaturer influence doesn't extend to movies as well.

As someone who has actually witnessed crashtests first hand I can categorically tell you that very rarely is damage in movies portrayed realistically. Do you know how many cars they got through on Bulliet or even on TV series.

Cars that are totally destroyed on films are rarely current generation models (which manufacturers care less about, are de-badged and/or done with the approval of the manufacturer and to the limits they set.

filethumbnail_70_T_mediaplayerpreview_130126b8-9e2d-4638-aeb4-9b1f63d84249_450x350.jpg

What you see above is the result of a 40mph impact, with total intrusion into the passenger cabin. Yet impacts at much greater speed occur on films and the driver and passenger often escape with simply cuts and bruises.

Films and TV are no more realistic in the portrayal of crash damage than game/sims, with, once again, the exception of motor-racing.

I mean crash and accident damage in films is automatically unrealistic (in comparison to an actual road car) for the rather simple reason that dead stunt drivers is a poor employment policy to follow. For example in Casino Royale the crash with the Aston has the car rolling numerous times, yet due to the fitment of a full roll-cage the roof does not crush and the passenger cell remains intact. Had it been a standard road car no one would have been likely to walk away.

Sorry but damage to cars in films is controlled and licensed in the same way as in games.

  • - All cars and tracks of GT4 will be in GT5
    Great news!

  • - more cars and tracks should be downloadable
Makes sense... but let's hope the cost isn't ridiculous.

  • - 4 driving views
    OK.

  • - damages for the race cars
Better than none, but I'll be very disappointed if PD doesn't add optional crash damage to all cars. I'll understand why there might not be mechanical failures, as that is understandable why manufacturers wouldn't want that, but crash damage is the fault of the drivers... so manufacturers... if you are listening.. get over it already! :)

  • - All Ferrari + F1
I assume by "All" they mean all current production Ferrari's, as there are well over a hundred Ferrari models.

  • - new city tracks
    Nice.

  • - online drivers : 12 to 20
    Best news so far! 👍👍

Hopefully, there will be optional race penalties and damage to prevent cheaters from riding rails and taking short cuts off the track. 👎

  • - changing weather during race
Great news... but it had better be optional.

  • "for Porsche and Lamborghini, no confirmation"
    No surprise there.

  • * Online garage
    ?

  • * Career mode
    OK.

  • * Online chat
    Expected.

  • * Spectator mode (à la PGR3)
    ?

  • * Possibility to create Clubs
    Interesting.

  • -Test playground for the future GT5
    ???

Scans are up fellas.[quality isnt great] Pay attention to the last pic. OMG indeed

Looks great!

Thanks for sharing the info! Gives me a lot more hope that GT5 will turn out to be what I have been waiting for from the GT series.

...Not to sound jaded or anything, but I doubt this will all happen.

How are they going to model more than 800 cars with interiors – especially since their standards are ridiculously high – in two years, assuming this gets released in early 2009? But if this is true... holy flippin' cow.
Of course they have probably been working on this even before GT4 was released, so they likely have already had over three years of development time in addition to the work they already did for GT4 that can be enhanced and carried over to GT5.

I agree though, I was surprised to see this, as I suspected fewer cars than GT4 and then offer additional ones later via download... at a price of course for those that simply must have those additional cars. Glad to hear that it appears that GT5 will start out with all the cars from GT4 and then some. 👍

Duċk;2670726
Assuming that, they'd model 80 cars each year. Assuming they started since GT4 was released (December '04), and they released it fall '08/early '09, they would have modeled ~320 cars, which is less than half the assumed 800+ (the new cars like the Ferraris, new models of existing cars like the '06 Subaru, and the 730 GT4 cars).
That estimated time frame was based on never before modeled cars. For GT4 cars, the amount of work would be substantially less, and in fact, much of the work could be largely handled by advanced high resolution graphic design programs. PD originally captured the cars on film, which is much higher resolution than even 1080p, and I suspect they knew that eventually they would need HD models for these cars in the future, thus much of the work was likely already completed during the development of GT4.

Everything from GT4, I would totally believe that... I thought GT4 built with the PS3 in mind and I wouldn't put it past any company to create a master GT4 file with all the info for all of GT4 in HD.
Exactly. 👍

Actually this is going way out of topic. You really arent convincing me enough to change my views about the whole damage shenanigan.. I really don't think accepting this is the right way to go. I am definetely NOT saying that PD is to be blamed for this .. *unless of-course they even dont have even Forza2 like damage for road cars and have full on damage for race cars, then I'd be pointing at PD and laughing about their effort on this matter, i'd still buy the game, but its just a figure of speech*..
BTW many movies I have seen have SMASHED CURRENT GEN Ferraris in a very detailed manner (well ofcourse at the end its probably just a body shell, but still completely demolished it) and that doesnt bother ferrari. Michael Bay did it in The Rock, with 355 Spider (that times current gen ferrari) even though the shot was really poor, he has not been sued over this.. He's went on to make really crappy movies since then on. I wish he was sued so we didnt get to see some of the things he's made.. Anyway, besides I never said Movies dont go thru a similar process, it's just that these manufacturers are more lenient towards movies than with games. Movies give them big bucks, so in that case, it's all well... If you read my post properly you'll know that THATS what I meant.. And I am only talking about Physical damage here, CRASH damage... (thats all, coz that's driver error)..

Just coz you are alright with this and you accept that this is alright, doesnt mean some of us are alright with it. K.Y. is not alright with it and that's why they keep trying to pesture these manufacturers once every now and then.. I never said that you were wrong by accepting that this is okay, i am only saying that we are not wrong either.. Cant you just accept that and let us demand for damage in road cars too?? Is it really THAT hard to do?

@ Dave - Thanks man, I'd never seen that... :D

french vidéo game magazine " JOYPAD" goes to Japan and meet K Yamauchi at polyphony digital and give us 3 pages of interview and some more scoop about GT5:

- All cars and tracks of GT4 will be in GT5
- more cars and tracks should be downloadable
- 4 driving views
- damages for the race cars
- All Ferrari + F1
- new city tracks
- online drivers : 12 to 20
- changing weather during race

I read that as;
1. The level of detail modelled for GT4 was much greater than was presented, most likely due to hardware limitations. Now we get to see how much work PD had actually done back then.
2. The microtransactions idea has not died completely, just been scaled down.
3. Bumper cam, roof cam, chase cam, interior cam.
4. 5 second penalty was restricted to special conditions races, damage will be restricted to extreme events, and only race cars permitted to enter.
5. All current Ferrari models will be in the game, including the current Ferrari F1, but NOT the entire current F1 lineup.
6. New tracks will be nice, but hopefully they will also re-work some of the oldies such as Rome and SS11.
7. Maximum of 12 or 20 drivers in any race depending on the track. Things would get very crowded if they allowed 20 at motorland, but the 'ring could easilly accomodate that many.
8. Weather conditions WILL change during longer races such as the enduro's, but shorter (beginner) races will likely remain fair weather only.

NOTE:- this is just my reading of the English bullet points. I have not seen the French article and doubt that I could read it with my language skills.

ARggggggggggghhhhhh!
Here we go again!
Its seems to me that SONY and PD are in total turmoil about where to go with GT.
Once again we seem to be getting fudged back to the old GTHD concept that was ready to go at launch, then scrapped! with the 'were going to get working on GT5 exclusively', then were going to have a GT5 prologue, now were going to go back to the GTHD.
Obviously they have been working on elements of the game, and had been, in the years between GT4 and PS3 in order to bring something to gamers.
Now deciding they didnt want to waste all that developement time, it looks like we will get the hi def upgrade of GT4 after all.
Remember GT4, already had developement of the online engine, it was removed last minute, obviously they have had time to tweak.
GTHD was scrapped because the online sale of elements was criticised heavily (IMO the classic items hadnt previously all been modeled in HD, and releasing them as future purchasable items would have allowed more modeling time), i believe that we will now recieve all the elements of the GT4 hd upgrade in the full game, and extra premiuim elements will still come as purchases!
GT4 also had modeled in car view, I posted a magazine photo i had on this site some years ago, which was taken from a in car view, where the top of the dash and windscreen wipers were visable, but it was to dark to make out much detail, that also never made the final game.
Damage will only be for race cars, because licensing is less of an issue, manufacturers will never allow sim based models of road going versions of their cars to be totalled to anything like what would be real, even if polyphony could model the real life physics and impact zones and crumple zones to the ncap standards.
Never going to happen, get over it, they are protecting the image of their multi billion pound creations!

So, From the looks of it, sometime in the next year or so, the flagship PS3 driving game, will be a rehashed version of a PS2 game, with elements that would have been in GT4 bar the PS2 processing power!
All in all that will be nice, it will be prettier in HD, the online element will add greatly to the experience!
It will however be far from a new Game!
PS3 GT needed to be a completely rewritten from the ground up game! It needs new direction and structure, Completely new physics, sound and AI engine.
All this constant tinkering and tweaking, is not moving the game forward enough. GT5 now looks like being a very long way off, probably close to another 4 years away, and that for me makes me feel sad for a game series that has given me so much pleasure, i was so looking forward to an all new, highly advanced GT experience in GT5, designed specifically to push the PS3, now my PS3 has to suffer GT4 hd, a game which will have its roots firmly placed in a game model which first apperared on my Original little grey PS!
IMHO PD and GT are getting sucked under and KAZ's creativity and forsight stiffled by SONY, the launch of PS3, the direction different people were looking to take it, the restructuring, the refocusing among many other elements have all lead to the way the current state of the GT series is at for PS3!
It seems the constant internal wranglings and decisions going on between Sony and PD, have left the state of GT and its future direction in a complete shambles, and the only losers here are the fans, lets just hope out of the ashes can one day, rise a Phoenix!

Calm down guys...I read the original post in French & it says nothing about GT:HD, but instead makes a reference to a game that will be released in between GT4 & GT5, which is the Prologue that KY mentioned not too long ago.

Here's his quote: "I can confirm for you that there will be a game released between GT4 & GT5."

It does however mention the *possibility* of new tracks & cars will be available for download. It doesn't say anything about having to pay for them.

gamelle, merci beaucoup pour l'info! ca c'est genial pour nous!!!

LOL

That was not a Ferrari in the Rock, its quite a well known fact that its was a 2nd gen MR2 with a 355 body kit, as such no licensing from either Toyota or Ferrari was required.

Sorry, but I have worked directly for a number of manufacturers and before yo can do anything directly to a car you have to obtain the consent of the manufacturer if it will portray them in even a slightly negative manner.

Martin Buckley's book 'Cars in Films' discusses numerous incidents like this, times when 'fake' cars were used to get around issues of this nature. Ferrari have a massive issue with there cars getting crashed (blown up is a totally different matter), and it shows in the movies, etc.

This is however quite well related to the point that genuine reasons exist as to why manufacturers control exactly how their product is portrayed in the mediums of games and films.

I just wanted to mention something about the wrecking of cars on film... Often you can get away without showing anything distinctive on the car and in turn you can use the car in film without much trouble... I doubt every movie made has every car cleared with the original company to build the car.

Also, when you buy a car and use it in a movie you are using a piece of your property and so it is easier to do things like wreck the car (if you are willing) without trouble from the manufacturer (I'm guessing about that)... Where-as in games, you are using the intellectual property and image owned by the car company so you never actually obtain ownership rights (until you sign a licensing deal).

Just think of making an independant film and not focusing on your car while filming... You could use your own car as it is your property and as long as you didn't identify the car distinctly it would be acceptable.
Then think of making a game on your own and making an exact replica of a corvette to be used in the game... Even without markings the design could be protected and beyond that, you've never bought anything from the company to claim ownership over the use of the product (which in this case is the car's image in a game).

That said... This all boils down to legal mumbo-jumbo and none of us have the access to PD's internal workings necessary to find out what is really holding up the damage in GT.

Btw, those screens looked awesome, especially that last one. 👍

Edit:
Oh, btw, that 40mph crash reminds me to mention...
Why do we want damage anyway?
It's not like it will be realistic, such as FM1 where you could plow into a wall at 100mph get a banged up bumper, lose alignment, but never actually ruin the car, what's so real about that? (for that matter, what's so great about that?)

In my opinion, sometimes it seems like "Damage" is a cheap way to justify poor driving. :indiff:
(as in, "I don't need to drive clean laps because the computer handicaps me for bad driving by making my car look bad after a brush with the wall)

It may now end up being called Prologue, but if you no anything about the detailed history of GT4 and GTHD classic and premium, you will see that their is very little difference here!
Weve already seen 20 car grids, pre PS3 launch, the reason all GT4 cars and tracks will feature, is they are simply lifted from GT4 and given the HD tweak, just look at any PS3 pre release videos for GTHD concept. The addition of Ferrari has been muted for along time, since they were really impressed by PDs modelling of autos, and since one already appeared in GTHD, is hardly a surprise, new city tracks were talked about way back in GT4 developement, downloadable content was always going to feature in PS3.
Like i said this will be more like GT 4.5 HD, underneath it all, it will still be running, the Old, if slightly tweaked Physics and AI engine.
Will the new content be enough to make This GT much better than GT4 on PS2, aside from the HD aspect? and the Online that GT4 always should have had!

Here's my take...
While you seem to look at this more like "they made GT4 and now they are tweaking it to create GT5." I look at it as if "they made GT4 with the PS3 in mind and simply tweaked it to go on PS2."

Although our theories seem similar, yours implies PD is doing little more than tweaking GT4 where as mine implies PD has been doing lots of work for the next project ever since they began GT4.

Really, I feel like GT4 was built for the PS3 and the version we play as "GT4" is actually more like "GT4 beta" and the real GT4 is coming to the PS3 (with everything we expected "our GT4" to have).

Basically, I think they've been working on GT5 as long as they've been working on GT4 and in the end, GT4 was all they were willing to put on a PS2 version of the next GT project.

I half agree with some of what you say here.
My take is that they did great research and modelling for GT4, much more detailed than just what the PS2 could actually use, in prep for future iterations on later consoles.
A lot of work went into the online aspect and AI for GT4 but eventually time constraints meant that these 2 elements went by the wayside for GT4.
The problem for me was those two elements being absent from GT4 detracted greatly from my enjoyment, and aside from the ring i felt very little reward from the title.
Im also thinking the sound model data and recordings they now have in their library were also left largely unchanged, due to the PS2 processing power.

When they released GT4, i believe PD knowing they wouldnt have PS3 dev kits for a long while planned to release GT4 in HD with a few tweaks, also adding in the previously removed online section and finishing off the new AI engine they talked about, to be ready in time for launch of the PS3 as a kind of show piece for Sony and giving them time to work on the next Full GT game.
Along the way i feel PD decided they wanted to start to develop GT5, especially after they got the full dev kits, and decided they would add a taster of that work to the GTHD title, in the meantime I think Sony wanted to use PD and GTHD to introduce us to downloadable content, and a half baked scheme was thrashed out between the execs of both PD and Sony.
I believe GTHD was almost fully ready to go at launch, and was demo'd, but the backlash from the media and consumers over the rip off costs, finally led to the removal of key players at the heart of Sonys decision making machine.
GT with saleable downloadable content was scrapped as a concept, and PD were left whith virtually nothing to show and GT5 years from completion.

Realising the potential long drought between now and the next true PS3 dedicated sequal, i believe Sony and PD have agreed to resurect GTHD, in a new structure to give the public something.
Now GT4 in HD with online, and possibly new AI would be great for me, but i would feel a little let down that they hadnt completely rejigged the physics engine with the power of the PS3.
Im sure the title will be great, I already have a PS3 and G25 waiting for a sniff, in the meantime im endulging in Forza 2, as turn10 really seem to have listened to the consumer, in the delivery of its content!
Maybe thats whats spoiling my opinion of GT right now!
Im sure when GTHD/prologue arrives it will be beautifull in its own right, i just would have liked a much more reworked title.
One thing i have no doubt about is that when GT5 finally does arrive after this interim GT is that it will have been worth the wait!

You've hit a couple of nails on the head here, you have two issues, first of all there's property. Now you have cases in film where a car company will have a big hand in their representation in a movie, take the Bond films for example, in Casion Royale you have the Aston Martin DBS which was a car supplied by Aston Martin, the car was still Aston Martins, they controled what could happen to it. The car was involved in a barrel roll that would have probably killed anyone inside no questions, but Bond was dragged out the car and in the next scene he was well enough to with stand torture. The message, if your going to barrel roll a car, it's safe to do it in an Aston. Well maybe not, but you get the idea.

Then you have the issue of private cars used in films, take that new car movie coming out soon, I can't recall the name but there's a Carrera GT crashed in it, that car is one of the directors personal cars. That smudges legal lines somewhat, though obviousely representation has to be within certain realms of reality, the borders are stretched.

Legal jargon is an ass, a very maze like ass.

Some little good news, too MUCH BAD NEWS!
I got news for PD and KY, if i dont see at least 24-44 cars on track at once depending on the track, SCREW PD and the GT series.
12-20 online but nothing mentioned about multiplayer offline? b.s.
Weather is about blasted time.
If i don't see damage of at least the hindering your car kind on the road cars, SCREW PD and the GT series.
If i don't see a COMPLETELY reworked game race structuring of how the races are done and the types of cars able to enter, SCREW PD and the GT series.
If i don't see a completely customizing your car feature, including decals and full custom multilayer paintshop, SCREW PD and the GT series.
All i mostly see here are yet more exscuses for PD and KY, and its making me sick.
Yes Forza may not be anywhere near realistic but at least they LISTENED to their fanbase.
I don't want GT4 rehashed, uh i mean GTHD on a new system.
That games physics sucked so badly i couldn't enjoy it and i thought GT3 was bad.
If i don't see a completely new and upgraded sound system, SCREW PD.
I don't give a rats arse about HD, i'ts to exspensive and i'll never see it.
There is a bit more good news, but the lack of Porsche sucks.
I could go on but why bother, everyone will buy the crap anyway and nothing will change.
I guess i'll just wait and see which system the GTR series gets put on and go play it.

I would suggest you spend a hundred million dollars or so & design your own game, it seems that no matter what PD comes out with you will be dissapointed!

For someone so picky about what you want you are going to be missing out on a lot by blowing off HD.

Ya know surround systems are exspensive too, so don't give a rats arse about that & don't worry about the sound since you don't care about the picture.

Well said. Besides the logic behind ranting about a product that isn't even out yet, I'm afraid some people's expectations or specifically their demands are severely out of touch with reality.

He sounds too much like an angry XBox fanboy, anyway. Ignore him.

Those pics were great! I love how that one guy is using the HDTV set I have as a close view monitor. lol

GTLXR,

I do know the history of GT:HD classic & premium...And I don't think the prologue would be anything quite like that. The game KY seemed to refer to was the one expected to preview GT5 later this year. I'm not convinced that this will be GTHD under a new name.

The downloadable content is mostly likely going to be for GT5.

Then again, I didn't translate the actual article, so I'm not sure I can trust all of the info (aside from the original bulleted points).

Gamelle,
Can you put up a scan, svp? Merci d'avance!!! :)
