Good idea...
Also nice that ive been a real-world race driver times ago.

Wouldnt it be the best for me to win ?

I hope its going to be a time-trial at FUJI....

Wow, what a great opportunity. I think i need to get online at home asap!!!

is there any way that players outside Europe can create an Euro account and compete???

Couldn't agree more. The OP might not think it's the stupidest idea, but I certainly do, as I find that giving a video game racer four months of training and then unleashed on an actual circuit with actual competition is not only foolish, it's outright dangerous. Reminds me of that MTV show where they would take 6 weeks, teach you how to do something like box, skateboard, or something else, than at the end enter you in an Amateur bout or a Vert skate competition. LOL, it could provide entertaining though.

What's more, I'm 99% sure it'll end up as the Euro's best punter who gets the win. Actually, I think I will be watching this ;)

Seeing as to i have some good race track experience, i know what it takes to run at the track. But i digress.

Again. I'm only looking at this as GT expanding it's marketing strategy outside the papers and visual media and onto actual participation events. I really hope that they are smart enough to consider prior experience enter this event but if it is a noob, then yeah we'll see what happens.

I started my diet today, theres no way my fat bottom will fit in one of those bucket seats in its current form, I'm being optimistic of course.

Is anyone else interested in competing or even discussing this event that is outside Europe? This sounds like a very entertaining way of playing a video game that prides its self on being a racing sim. It looks to me that most on this forum are NOT VERY COMPETATIVE!!! This is great for the game, but should be discussed more in hopes of none Europeans gaing access.

Anyone who isn't one of the top 10 GT5P drivers in the world shouldn't feel compelled to discuss this event.

Even though this competition is superfluous and nothing more then a publicity stunt, making it Europe only is wrong.

Really? There are some pretty quick drivers around here, maybe I'm missing your point?

GT Academy Goes Live

Drivers of the world, start your engines - the GT Academy has arrived. The ultimate competitive driving test will begin on June 2nd when GT Academy goes live in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue™. The pan-European competition sees PlayStation® and Nissan unite the worlds of virtual and real-life racing to make the dreams of aspiring race drivers a reality. The competition will run as follows:

Stage One: http://www.gtacademy.eu/ – 2nd June 2008 for seven weeks
The first phase of GT Academy will take place online with a giant Gran Turismo 5 Prologue tournament on PLAYSTATION®Network. The competition will run for seven weeks and to enter, players must register their PLAYSTATION Network sign in ID on http://www.gtacademy.eu/. The next time they play GT5 Prologue online they will be able to race in the GT Academy Time Trial where they will compete to be the fastest around the Eiger Nordwand track in a Nissan Fairlady 350Z.

Stage Two: National Final - July 2008
The fastest 20 drivers in each country will be invited to a national final to compete head to head on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The three fastest drivers from the final will win a seat at the…

Stage Three: GT Academy at Silverstone - 25 August 2008
The virtual gives way to tarmac as the fastest three drivers from each country travel to Silverstone, the home of British motor racing, to take part in the GT Academy - a real-life driving competition on the track itself. Competitors will not only have to prove their driving skills in a Nissan GT-R but will also be tested for their mental and physical skills in a series of tests.

The two fastest drivers from Silverstone then have the chance to enter a four month training programme to earn their racing licenses and take part in a real life race in a fully race prepared Nissan 350Z at the 24 Hour endurance event in Dubai in January 2009.

Speaking at Nurburgring 24H race, Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital producers of Gran Turismo said: “This is a very exciting day for Gran Turismo. The Gran Turismo story started 10 years ago with the ambition to make a racing game that gives players the ultimate driving simulation experience. The GT Academy is the ultimate realisation of this ambition taking the Gran Turismo experience to the next level.

Stephane Cottin, Vice President, Marketing and Strategy, for Nissan in Europe continued: “GT Academy is a first for the motoring industry. Never before has a competition of this scale been undertaken to unite the worlds of virtual and real-life racing. GT Academy sets the challenge to see if gamers can recreate their performance behind of wheel of a real racing car and on their journey be amongst the first in Europe to drive the GT-R on track.”

Eiger Nordwand track in a Nissan Fairlady 350Z -- That will be first time for me... :scared:

Yeah and me.... :nervous:Nothing wrong with a challenge though :scared:

Trouble is even if I did get to the second round (which is highly unlikely) I'd never pass the medical and fitness tests

same here :dunce:

4 months??

Yeah I can see my job still being there when I get back :irked:

Yeah I can see my wife still being here when I get back:(

Why do they have to choose that crap circuit is beyond me :(
I knew it would be a 350Z but I hoped for a real track like Suzuka. Eiger is just wannabe rally event like it was Capri in GT4.
I disagree with Sony on that.

i agree aswell!! make a mistake on suzuka and the whole lap is over, but eiger can be recovered by bouncing off walls (no doubt more cheating going on :banghead: )

You should have no problems making the cut then.

Plus I thought you still got penalties for hitting the walls etc on Eiger :dopey:

I'm guessing you will, this being an online event and all.

well im hoping so :) although was thinking... if people do make the cut and get to silverstone, will you be made to drive with a wheel!? i drive with controller and if was made to use the wheel (which most GT display / competitions do), wouldnt do anywhere near aswell.... hmm?

Since some lucky punk is ending up in a Raceprepped 350Z, I'm guessing using a wheel would help ever so slightly :-P

Yeah I don't think they'll be able to mount a sixaxis in there some how.

Plus, I think doing 250Km/h, in a real car, controlled with a 6-Axis will be bloody frightening :-P

but then not everyone has the money to buy a wheel to practice with!!

was just making the point that some people will have the upper hand thats all. not complaining :)

omg!!! im aso registering ill race online but get my dad to do the real drving cos im 13

I reckon this event MUST have the following restrictions so that when the person wins he/she won't have to say to the staff at Gt "Sorry but I can only drive from behind and outside the car using a controller" :dunce: - can you imagine him/her running behind the car on the track with a six axis - they would look a right idiot - mind you it would be very amusing :)

1) The view should be restricted to Cockpit
2) The gears should be manual only
3) The driving has to be done with a wheel and not a controller.
4). Simulation/profesional most life like physics ONLY

What do you reckon??

To race in the Dubai 24hrs is going to require (as the article clearly states) a race licence, in this case an International B licence. These don't just get handed out, the four months training is likely to be very intensive and will require passing the required training, competing in races and a medical before the licence is granted...

http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/Comp_Licence_Notes.pdf

...lets be honest no race organiser is going to allow someone who is not capable race, its not like they will simply be thrown into the 24hr race. In addition any illegal behaviour on the track will get the driver black flagged, fined and with the licence endorsed or revoked.
Scaff

To add to that, im sure they will be looking for someone that has had prior experience on the racetrack.

You have to be very fit in the neck and be able to deal with the extreme heat of Dubai, in a hot car, in a fire race suit.

For those of you in Europe, you better go get allot of real track time if you want to stand a chance at getting picked.

After a 4 month training period you will definitely be put in a racecar - No doubt about it...

That's the only way i'm thinking. All driving aids off too. Everything else don't present real simulation, maybe that view where you can see front of your car too. Hope they realize those.

Yeah, but what im saying is you cant just learn in 4 months. Racing requires a talent that isn't required in a video game.

What i mean is that you have to show them is that in those 4 months, you have the ability/talent/skill to get on the pace.

4 months is a long time, but when your learning how to drive a real race car - mot everyone can do it.

For instance, im in a flight school and practice on FSX at home. But when you get in the plane, you have to be able to zone out everything and do the task at hand. Not everyone can do that, or even learn it. That "fear" factor wont disappear for some people.
