On the struggle bus at Yas Marina, 5 seconds off the fastest time in the world!

To avoid destroying what’s left of my DR, I’ve been over at Fuji where my QT is the usual 2-3 seconds off the top times.

One question - are you all starting on softs if you’re at the sharp end of the grid? I’ve noticed in recent multi-tire races that some drivers choose the harder compound even if they’re at the front. I assume this is because the early laps are crowded and you can’t use the pace of the faster tire? Otoh, maybe softs allow you to get away and not get caught in the opening laps melee?

I started on softs last night (I was P2) and escaped the chaos, but then got caught by soft runners at the end of the race.
I prefer to finish on the best tire regardless of where I start. I also set my QT using the worst of the tire options available and do all my practice with that tire so that I am most aware of my performance envelope with that tire. Doing it this way allows me to maximize pace on the laps with the hardest tire knowing that i have the softest tire waiting after the stop.

Used to be I would start on the softest if I were in the top 3 in qualifying because it would help to pull away but I'm not consistently good enough to maintain those gaps when switching to the worse tire.

Had generally a good week at Yas Marina, very clean, a win and some top 2-5 at BS, but today, utter rot and couldn’t believe I was in a SR S lobby, folk diving in on the corners and getting all fisty when trying to pass them, pff I hope a one off of midweek grotty pub goers because this track is not nice with a group like this
It’s not a particularly good racing circuit as a whole as the choke points don’t offer multiple lines, they are all narrow or on the limit.

Personally I don’t feel it’s an actually good track but it presents well, and is a spectacle we wouldn’t see typically.

Different note, you can feel the tracks that were “forced” layout wise over those that evolved or are just honest in what they are. yas looks pretty but it’s not a drivers track IMO

Fully agree mate, I think now the novelty wore off the frustrations ppl have are spilling over to whoever is next to pass.

At least there is some other stuff to do until
Monday like TTs before Sardegna hits.

I just hate Fuji too so won’t be going there but still CGV needs some hot lapping I reckon 👍

Agree, nothing worse than getting caught at the end on the slowest compound!

Do you see others doing the same in your lobbies (starting on the slower compound even if running up front)? At Fuji, still see the front runners on softs.

I'm sorry I can't say I've paid a lot of attention lately.

Agree with all of this. It definitely feels like a forced layout - compare it with some of the old-school 'natural' layouts, like Brands Hatch or Suzuka. Both of those are challenging in their own right, but do have a more comfortable flow to them.

On the track limits subject, on the day I tried Yas Marina I kept nearly turning into the pitlane at the last turn - looking at some of the replays, I see that cutting the corner by driving into the pitlane appears to be the fastest way to take it!

I can't believe that wouldn't earn a penalty on the real life track?

It was probably answered somewhere else over time but i couldn't find an answer with the search bar. Maybe this is the best thread to ask:

How can i simulate BoPs in an offline environment? I'd like to test race cars in an offline time trial mode.

Enter the race (A, B or C) with the car you've chosen. Go to car settings, take the settings screenshot.
You just need to replicate those exact settings (power restrictor and ballast are most likely needed) in offline mode and it's done.

Edit: can't tell you how to replicate track conditions. You need to assume those, but it's not so easy.

Never thought of that. It's a bit of work than. Finding an online race with the Group cars i like, with the low/mid/fast BoP i like and then copying every cars setting.

I thought it could be easier, maybe with offline custom races or the online lobby races.

I don't need track conditions as I don't want to test for a specific event.

Custom race. You can turn on BoP. If you just want to test instead of race just set the grid to only have 1 other car.

Also remember to enable tyre wear, as the physics behave differently when it's off completely.

Interesting! Thanks! Any guess at what BoP and tires will be applied to next weeks Gr.4 Nürburgring race?

Edit:
Extra question:
Are low/mid/fast BoP typically in line performance-wise or could there be completely mixed results in any of them?

Custom races. There is an option to apply the BoP in the race settings. There is a requirement to have at least one AI competitor in the race, though. If you want to do some laps unmolested, I find it helpful to use a rolling start and set the starting distance to its maximum value (50m, IIRC).

The BoP is determined by how the track is classified. Nurburgring 24h is classified as a high-speed track so we'll get the high-speed BoP. Tires are anybody's guess at this point. They weren't shown in the news article about the GTWS-related events.

The big change of the last update is the engine brake adjustment.
I read about it in the update notes but my muscle memory didnt catch it yet

Last night on Fuji I was battling 3 wide on lap 2 (I was in the middle) with two cars in front before turn 1.
Because of being sandwiched and on VR I lost reference of the brake marker and brake a bit late.

I started to downshift like a psycho while also braking and the gearbox got stuck on 3rd gear.
Car outside, car inside and car in front... the result was obvious and terrible.

The poor fellow in front of me got a serious punt, I got a 4 secs pen for ramming and of course I stopped the car on a safe place to wait for his recovery but the race was ruined for the both of us.

This change is a good thing, the engine killing trick was very unrealistic and abused for the vast majority of us.
Now I only need to adapt to it for the sake of the people around me :embarrassed:

Its a terrible, terrible, terrible track, just really poor in every aspect. CGV isn't much better, just chicane, straight, chicane, strait.....repeat...... terrible.

Making the Virtual Syncro work like a real one was a very very good change, the current TT in the R34 shows it up really nicely as now you have sync your downshifting to your trail braking correctly in say T1.

I also think it will help a lot of people learn to trail back better to get a more balanced car and rotation than previously.

CGV is addictive for hot laps. I am NOT prepared to race there, though, lol. I was worried about the gearbox update and figured it would rear it's head in the SF's more than anywhere else given the ridiculous stopping distances and speed of the downshifts. Losing even a meter in the brake-zone pretty much guarantees a candlelit dinner with Barry-R, but I survived. Put 140 miles on my shiny new Honda last night.👍

@Childe Roland is at the top of my friends list so I gots some work to do.😁

It’s funny you should mention gearbox updates as I’ve just noticed when try to upshift to 2nd I have to click it twice, I was wondering whether my wheel is fooked and I needed a new one 😁

Better racing at yas Marina this lunch, started p8 finished p4 - much cleaner

Have a good weekend everyone

I didnt return to CGV since monday (that race is a SR killer) and now that you mention it, the braking markers need to be recalculated now that we cant abuse the gearbox...

I think one of the things I’ve noticed is I’m generally just doing less miles each day and that’s fine as I spend my miles just honing in on something.

When I try to context switch between the races and the TTs it makes me realise I need to pick a day for one or two of them to focus on, like the Spa GR1 TT and daily A in the formula car, swapping from the F1 van to the super formula isn’t optimal 🤣

Had a couple of races tonight and was good going, gonna be one of those circuits where I’m mid pack I’d say, only managing a couple of positions forward.

Can’t say I’ll spend too much time weekend racing as fam duties need doing this weekend.

Did a couple of hot laps on CGV, nah that’s not for me 😂

I do look forward to these tracks in Gr3 though, hopefully will be more rewarding but saying that 2 wide through CGV turns might prove interesting 😁
